MBB: Iowa wins, UM moves up one spot in Kenpom

Submitted by crg on December 10th, 2019 at 6:22 AM

Just an observation that UM's strength of schedule rankings are among the highest of any team in Kenpom top 10 (with MSU and KU around the same or slightly higher).  Also curious that OSU and Louisville have the lowest SoS rankings (by far) of any team in the too ten.

Iowa's win over Minnesota last night was enough to move UM from 12 to 11 in the overall Kenpom ranking.

Not important, but nice to see.

at this point, we'll be fine if we take care of our own business. The fancystat sites will slowly remove preseason input. Gonzaga, UL, ISU are all more than decent so they should show up as Q1 wins by the end.

It's really tough to tell who had the worst offensive performance against Iowa's notoriously awful defense:

Choose your Gopher:

A) Marcus Carr: 1-10 from the field, 0-4 from three, 56.2 ORtg on 15.4 usage

B) Gabe Kalscheur: 0-10 from the field, 0-8 from three, 0 ORtg on 15.3 usage

C) Daniel Oturu: 8 turnovers on 33.2 usage, for a turnover rate of 48%. He got called for traveling four times in the first 11 minutes of the second half, when the game was still in reach.

No idea what Kenpom does to compensate for lack of early season data, but it seems to not work very well. This morning his ratings have Purdue ranked sixth!, five spots ahead of Michigan, despite three losses to Marquette, Florida St., and Texas, two of which were at home. Treating Kenpom ratings as meaningful at this stage (as the blog very much does!) is a dubious proposition.

Are there any details on how he does his early season fudging?

Edit: I guess this could also just be an overreaction to their drubbing of Virginia, but that also seems like a weakness. It's silly to have two three-loss teams in the top six at this stage.

By this stage, they correlate quite well with what is actually going to happen, even if they might not match up with whatever your expectations or arguments based on specific, narrow selections of data might be.

On a similar note, every national champion since 2004 has been ranked in the top-12 of the week six(which is this week) AP Poll.
