Mayfield and Hudson Starting?

Submitted by Tyler1495 on

Just watched a video from James Yoder (I know not a huge fan of him). He basically said he's confident that Mayfield and Hudson will be the starters week 1. Does this show how badly JBB and Runyan developed over the summer? I am not confident with starting a freshman and a rs freshman on the road at ND in their first start.

So... a fifth year senior would have to make a major leap from his underwhelming senior year to get to adequate... so instead you want a kid that you have never seen play against a college Dline, because he has, well.. never faced a college dline.  Got it.  Sound logic.

I am surprised he didn.t take the rest. Before he does, I will drop a few things that Rivals reported. Patterson appears to be the clear frontrunner at QB. Peters and DM are battling for the QB2. Milton hasn’t picked up where he left off in the spring. Perry and DPJ have been lights out. Black, Collins, and Martin are right in there. Gentry is killing it! Ambry Thomas is the fastest guy on the team and pushing the CB’s hard.

Could be a situation of effort on his own behalf. He knows he won't start or play because he's too green yet. Very talented but green. Maybe he's just sitting back and soaking it all in. The most talented ones can be lazy sometimes.

A big knock on Milton as a recruit was his consistency. It was noted in camps that he would go to one camp and make every throw, and come to the next and you wouldn’t even know he was there.

An issue he’s probably dealing with now is adjusting his throwing mechanics and it’s thrown him off his game a bit. Not to mention taking classes on top of learning the offense and going to practices takes some getting used to.

Concur with the Yoder is a clown who knows nothing opinion.

That said, I would actually be relatively ok with that outcome.  As discussed on the WTKA show, if you have a young guy and a veteran who are at pretty close  performance levels, give me the young guy who will develop and improve more.

Gary has also said he's been working against Mayfield and Hudson, which I guess means they're first team, so there may be some truth to this

As I said a few days ago, I would take it as a good sign if Mayfield was in with the 1s.

FWIW, there's a guy over at GoBlueMichiganWolverine that says he knows Jalen and has claimed for a while that Mayfield's running with the 1s. No idea of the truth, but he did post this five days ago. He also posted something about Warinner announcing Mayfield as the current top of the RT depth chart, and Ruiz standing up and saying something along the lines of "Looks like there's going to be a lot more pepper and a lot less salt on this line," whatever that means. Also, and again take it FWIW, same guy also said that JBB didn't develop in the weight room and that we need Hudson to take that spot.

I could've sworn I read something on the board yesterday saying Warriner specifically said Runyan will be one of the tackles.  Maybe I"m taking crazy pills

Based off nothing it sounds like if either Hudson or Mayfield win a starting spot they will be RT and Runyon would move to LT. if JBB wins it then he is LT and Runyon starts at RT
