Matt Barrows - Harbaugh Instruction Manual

Submitted by Mattavious on

This was written back in December but I have just seen it for the first time as it has been brought up due to the Cowherd interview.  If you haven't read it, I recommend that you follow the link and it will be sure to make your day.  it is a comical interpretation of what Michigan is getting in Harbaugh, written as an instruction manual.  It seems to be pretty spot on.    My favorite:

You may notice that your Harbaugh never shuts off. This is normal.

It didn't genererate (m)any comments because some folks were still doing their best Phyllis from Mulga impersonations after the Cowherd interview. Or to be fair they were still discussing the interview and who was to blame and either skipped over it or it didn't grab their attention. Personally, I found it funny and thought it deserved a new thread since it got lost in the conversation.

I have seen bits of this posted before but never read the "manual".  I gave me smile reading it.  I would think the link was posted before but thanks for shairing.

This manual doesn't address his recent torso covering issues. Part 5 states his attire will be consistent. That does explain the tucked in the khakis Tiger's jersey, but doesn't cover the shirtless version. Though maybe that is implied in part seven which talks about him showing up with a bemt finger, chipped tooth or gash.

That won't go over well here if that remains true.*

If Harbaugh is as successful as we all hope, plenty of Michigan fans will feel jilted as hell if he leaves after four years for the NFL. I think the vast majority of Wolverine fans expect he's here for the long haul.

which got a round of applause, if I recall.  I really think that he views himself as Bo 2.0 (or Fielding 2.0, or Fritz 2.0, or some hybrid of him and them).  Good for him.  I hope he gets to live a very long time in the house he builds here.

I had read that article when it first came out.  As soon as I heard about how the interview had went, this article and it's contents was the first thing that came to mine.  Just smiled and thought that the writers had done pretty good job summing up what we were getting.  Still makes me smile...

My first thought was that it's an interview and why are people so worked up over it? Then I watched it and it seemed like Harbaugh answered his questions the same way he does elsewhere. Cowherd asking Harbaugh to sell his program was bound to end badly for the herd.

Actually the best part is: "Your Harbaugh has been programmed for combat and within six months will pick a fight with the biggest, baddest bully on the block. Urban Meyer, you have been warned."

As for the "four years" part, a few things. First, to what degree is his short life span personally inflicted? If the guy loves a certain position, wouldn't it be the case that he'd go above and beyond to stick around if he wants? Second, how much of the short life span a function of the teams not 100% knowing what to expect? Hackett is no dummy. The alums who pulled this together have known Harbaugh for decades. I've got to think Ann Arbor knows exactly what they are getting and have either adjusted their expectations and/or installed certain organizational measures to account for Harbaugh's personality. Taken together, I could easily see his natural shelf life get extended by a good 4-8 years. Possibly longer.

Keeps going on and on about how Harbaugh is going to wear out his welcome at Michigan.  What he doesn't seem to understand is that Michigan knew exactly what they were getting when they hired him.

Yes, he's a little weird and eccentric.  He rubs people the wrong way a lot of the time and has a disdain for the press.  He's also singularly focused on winning and has a love for Michigan that runs very deep.

Does that remind anyone of a certain former Michigan coach?

Let's see, in Cowherd's profession, knowing something about the interviewee and developing decent interview questions should be one of the top two or three parts of doing his job well.  He gets at best a C grade on that count.  As a head coach, answering interview questions well has to be pretty low on the list of things he needs to do well.  I can easily think of 20-30 things more important to his success on the job.  Even if Harbaugh gets an F, who the hell cares?

Cowherd acted as thouge he were somehow doing Harbaugh a favor and that he needed this interview to sell himself and the program to recruits and got miffed when Harbaugh didn't play along.
