Marve vs. McGuffie
I want to bring up something I think was lost in the whole McGuffie situation. RR got a lot a heat from players transfering but one thing he didn't do (which he easily could have)was limited where guys like McGuffie could transfer to. (Hey Boren he could easily have done that to you and forced you to play at Miami of Ohio or Cincinnati). Robert Marve is trying to transfer out of Miami and they are not allowing him to go to any ACC or SEC school or any Florida team. It just bothers me that RR gets a bad wrap when he could be a lot worse and do something like Randy Shannon did.

This is very true. I am kinda surprise that RR at least does not let them back into the big 10. That would be understandable, but this Marve situation is just ridiculous. He should be allowed to play in a school in Florida if he wants, should just not be allowed in the SEC.

Miami is in the ACC, not the SEC.

Here is the link to the Rivals article. What I didn't know is that his dad (who lives in Tampa) as cancer. The article states the closest school he can attend from his house is 900 miles!

I thought, as a conference rule, you could not transfer to another Big 10 school and get a scholarship from the school. Thus, I thought Boren was able to go to OSU because he was not getting a scholarship. If so, I'm not sure RR could have done to Boren what Shannon is doing to Marve. My guess is Marve needs the schollie and the Borens can pay in-state tuition in Ohio.
But that depends on whether its the schollie that is used to block Marve's attendance at Florida. I wonder if Marve would be allowed to play for Florida if he paid his way through.

I really don't think Urban would have taken this guy anyway. Florida is the class of the state academically. I don't think this guy would have fit in there. Florida has had problems in the past, and they seem to be tight as a drum these days.

I thought the Big Ten rule was something like that if you accept a scholarship at your new school, you have to sit out two years. If you don't accept a scholarship, you sit out one. I'm not positive about that though.
I can't believe any coaches would refuse to let a kid transfer where he wants. That's just unethical IMO.

There are allegations of tampering by some SEC schools so Miami wanted to prevent him from going there.

Wait a minute! Tebow said that God lead him to Florida. Why would God lead him to a dirty program?? And, after God apparently lead him to this dirty program, why would said God then reward such blind ignorance with a National Championship and a Heisman?? WTF!!!

I'm skeptical of the tampering charge. College football coaches are busy enough coaching their teams and recruiting high schoolers. Is it really likely that they'd have the time/interest to recruit players on other teams? That sounds to me more like sour grapes from Miami's camp.

may be more to do with Marve's activities then the schools. I don't know. I could see the kid calling around first before he decided to transfer.

That I could see. But I don't really consider it tampering if the kid initiates it. Doesn't he have a right to inquire about other schools?

I have always wondered about how transfers go about things. If I had to guess there is an accepted protocol and certain unwritten rules. Such as, your high school coach makes inquiries to the new schools to gauge interest or something like that. My guess is it crosses the line when the transfer actually has conversations with potential schools.

That's the rule, but the school can release the player from it - which Michigan did for Boren. However, if I recall, Rodriguez didn't grease the wheels for that - Lloyd Carr did.

IIRC Lloyd angrily refuted rumors he was involved in helping Boren go to OSU. RR just gave him an unconditional release because if you're not playing for RR he doesn't give 2 shits where you are apparently (I concur with this sentiment as well).

IIRC (which I may not), the original story was that Lloyd encouraged Boren to go to OSU, which is what he angrily refuted. But, whatevs.

Does this have something to do with your release papers? I heard McGuffie got a full release or something like that. Can you release them from their scholarship with limitations?? That sounds like a real a-hole thing to do. I can understand a young kid like McGuffie getting home sick and what not. Why punish them for making a mistake? Sounds like Shannon is an a-hole, but I don't know the whole story so that might be a little rough.

Weiss did it last year with their QB.
If you're not released you can still go to the school you just can't get a scholly. So you have to pay your own way.
It's somewhat common to restrict movement to schools on your schedule or in your conference, but this one is unusual. Like I said above, there are bitter feelings between Marve and Shannon.

A girl from the state of Michigan got a gymnastics scholarship to a Big 12 power, attended for fall semester and wanted to come home and go to UM. Gymnastics season starts in January, so she never competed (I'm not sure how much she even practiced with the team), and her coach would not give her a release -- she had to sit for the full season last year.

espn is reporting that Miami has lifted some of the restrictions. Now its just ACC schools, schools in florida, LSU, Tennessee, and teams that wear white after labor day(just kidding on that one).
so that's better...ish.
