This makes it more official-ish.

Also, for some reason, can't wait to see what his salary is.  Was this a... 'I need this guy' or a 'I need this job' sitch.

Either way Go Blue and congrats Coach!

Additionally, per sources, Michigan and Knicks assistant Howard Eisley are expected to complete a deal within the next 24 hours. He will finalize Juwan Howard’s coaching staff, joining Martelli and Saddi Washington.

Eh, this isn't necessarily the case.  The NBA is pretty significantly simpler than the college game because of the rules.  There's no zone defense. There's far less variation in game plans and tactics, which makes scouting and game planning a lot easier.

They pretty much all play the same game which is to give it to a creator and run pick and roll with everyone spread out.  Since the 3pt line is further back and pretty much everyone can shoot, help defense isn't as much of an option.

The NBA is a one-on-one game and pick and roll game.  That's where all the leverage is.

Greg Popovich even said it this year.  The NBA is massively simplified these days.  Also, the majority of guys already know what they're doing.  The entirety of teaching in the NBA is to have a bunch of coaches all helping one or two young guys that don't know what they're doing.  They're not coaching an entire team of guys that don't know what they're doing EVERY SINGLE YEAR.

I mostly follow the Pistons. They're a .500 team, pretty close to average. How many of their players don't need coaching? The very few who don't need help on some fundamentals still have to work on the schemes.

The Pistons struggled badly against zone defenses this season. While it's not played a lot in the NBA, there are a number of teams that play it at least a little.

The NBA is simpler because there's less variation in skillsets and talent and everything is extremely data-driven and analytics-based nowadays. The numbers guys will tell you what you need to do -- and these things are based on thousands of datapoints, by player and by team. The assistant coach's job is dramatically simplified when everything is so data-informed.

The college game is a totally different animal because there is way more to prepare for and there's much less data (and the data is lower quality) to work with.

12 years in the League as a player based on his IQ, not athleticism. I’m guessing he can teach young men who want to get to the League. I am continually unsurprised by the lack of imagination of fans who seem to want to “I told you so” about hiring Juwan. Let’s make the easy criticisms and try to look like we know something if JH fails. We can point to his experience as if we just knew that meant he couldn’t do well. (This is why re-treads get repeatedly hired despite mediocrity—because we just had to get a guy with HC experience to succeed.)

I was wondering if hiring both Mike Miller and Phil Martelli was redundant and it appears that they've decided it is. I can't really speak to Eisley's coaching credentials but this all makes enough sense to me.

Hopefully Martelli and/or Eisley have some connections in guys for 19. We need a couple legit players for this year.

I put this in the front page post too, but Martelli's teams have been top 5 in turnover rate on offense for 3 of the last 4 years. Before that there was almost no trend whatsoever in that area, but it's still very much noteworthy.

Think this is a great hire. Martelli obviously knows the college game instead and out. Will be huge in helping Howard get acclimated to his new position. Welcome aboard Coach Martelli!!
