M offers 2017 Cass Tech OG Jordan Reid

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

As the final rounds of the 2016 recruiting cycle are upon us.........2017 becomes the focus in just 12 days.

Michigan just offered 2017 OG Jordan Reid from Cass Tech. He's a 6-4/284 3 star who has offers from Florida and Tennessee.

It is absolutely critical that we win Cass Tech in 2017.

Certainly maintaining the Cass Tech pipeline is important. Could anyone give me/the board a run down of the big targets at Cass Tech for 2017? Better class of seniors than normal?

Donovan Peoples-Jones, Jaylen Kelly-Powell, Donovan Johnson (hasn't been offered yet but probably will) and now Jordan Reid.

We also offered their 2018 star, Kalon Gervin, just days ago.

CB Donovan Johnson: offers from Cincinnati, Tennessee
S Jaylen Kelly-Powell: Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Stanford, and many other offers
LB Zach Morton: Cincinnati, a couple MAC offers
WR Donovan Peoples-Jones: offers from everywhere, including Michigan
OG Jordan Reid: offers from Florida, Michigan, Tennessee, and others

They have a handful of other kids who will probably start picking up offers soon, too.

because I know a lot of people on this site have roots on the eastern side of state. I became interested when CT went from basically DB production to routinely having players at a number of different positions receiving offers from some of the best programs in the country. The feedback was that Wilcher had hired a significant number of very good coaches which now results in the entire team, not just dbs, receiving very good coaching with the results that we have witnessed.

But as to your question, King was the first large public school from the east side to win a state championship and CT quickly followed, winning back-to-back titles, I believe. But there is a lot of talent in that league, with these two schools at this time, apparently ahead of the pack. Honestly I cannot name the remainder of the schools in the PSL.

It is my hope though that the talent gap separating CT and King from the remainder is closed quickly. I remember in the early 70s when there were considering disbanding that league due to financial concerns. In an effort, spearheaded by Bo, the league, obviously, remained intact. He was fully aware of the talent that played in that league. I am hoping, as I stated, that the other schools follow the examples of these two and create a balanced league that would result in many more MI high schoolers being exposed to better coaching at a younger age for the obvious benefits of the in state colleges.

Ideally, they would have a league as strong as the DCL where, despite the size of school, it is not unusual to see a smaller school win the league and have multiple state championships. And of course we are aware that this league sends more players to D1 schools than any other in the state.

You are pretty much spot on, but I would like to add a few things. It wasn't so much of Wilcher going out and "hiring" additional coaches, but more so previous relationships creating a domino affect.

Another thing to add (and not an attempt to bring politics in this) but with the State taking over a portion of the Detrot Public Schools, there are only a few true DPS high schools left. The four prominent ones being Cass Tech, King, East English and Renaissance. Many of the other former footbal talent producing powerhouses like Henry Ford,  Pershing and Mackenzie (now closed) are none factors for the most part.

The schools managed by the state are always in a state of flux with constant changing of Principals and coaches. The kids just do not want to go to the schools because of that reason and is evidenced by the enrollments. Therefore those four schools have the pick of the litter of talent within the city. Cass Tech (with King catching up and EEV right behind) has the program structure (and academics) in place that entice parents.

The coaches at Cass are 100% for the kids. The work they put in for those kids is amazing. The training and exposure that they apply is top notch. It is quite normal for 20 or so kids visiting the state schools and nearby schools  (UM, MSU, CMU, WMU, Toledo, BGSU, EMU, SVSU, WSU..etc.) throughout the season and off season. They also have summer tours to the Penn States, Alabamas, NC States, Floridas, OSUs etc.

The support doesn't stop once they sign the LOI. The goal is to see those kids graduate and perform to their best. Delonte Hollowell is perfect example.

Too distracted? In the past six years Detroit Cass Tech has:

  • A 70-11 record
  • 6 - District Titles
  • 6 - Regional Titles
  • 3 - Semi-Final Titles
  • 2 - State Titles

2013 State Semi-final lost to Detroit CC was withouth All-State RB Mikey Weber (ankle injury)

2015 State Final lost to Romeo was without All-State QB Rodney Hall (injury)

Two of the 2015 losses were to Detroit King (who went 14-0) by a total of 5 points.

Distracted you say?

My argument was not that they have the greatest talent or team in the country. My argument was that as evidenced by their consistant high performance, it would be hard to conclude that they were distracted from winning state titles by "recrootin".

Yeah, but they beat OSU with their backup quarterback. Sure OSU lost that game more than MSU won that game. But their QB didn't make any major mistakes that made them lose the game. They should definitely take a step back though. Losing all those starters as well as a first rounder in Conklin is definitely going to hurt.

but msu isn't going anywhere. That's not to say we can't move above them but the best we can hope for is a trash replacement for MD when he leaves. They are recruiting well and they've done what they've done the last decade largely on hidden gems and scraps. They'll be fine and it'll take us constantly beating them to make them indifferent about football again. Fastest case for that, even without the punt BS this year, is about a decade. We need to get used to them being around for a while.

Corey Malone-Hatcher, Donovan Peoples-Jones, Carter Dunaway, Ja'Raymond Hall, Allen Stritzinger, Jaylen Kelly-Powell, Ambry Thomas, Josh Ross, and K.J. Hamler

Michigan has now offered a couple more prospects, so "Pipeline 9" doesn't quite fit anymore.

The class of 2017 in Michigan is very strong with a ton of talent located in SE Michigan. This is a class that has numerous D1 prospects that Michigan has high on their recruiting board. 2016 is an aberration. 2017 will get about 10 instate players to sign with Michigan
