Looking ahead: Next year's offensive line

Submitted by jaster on
Meandering through a Monday here. I'm just looking for insight from others as to which linemen can potentially fill which roles in the future. A little offensive line educatio, if you will. I'm not expecting a definitive answer, as obviously things can change, but what are Michigan's options at each spot? Left Tackle: Who can fill this role next season? Can Schilling be a tackle? Would one of Huyge or Dorrestein move over to the left side? Barnum isn't a real option, is he? Seems like this could be a problematic spot in 2010, no? Left Guard: If Schilling isn't moved to tackle, obviously he'd keep this spot, which I sense is most likely. I'm not completely up to speed as to why Schilling can't be a tackle, but I've heard it's unlikely. I guess if somehow he was moved, Huyge or Ferrara would take this spot? Center: Molkshake. Right Guard: Probably Huyge, I would think, unless he is moved to tackle. Then it would probably be Ferrara? Could Mealer be in the mix? Right Tackle: Dorrestein? Huyge? Omameh?

Insert hopeful thinking - Seantrel Henderson Oh and I think Schilling has found his spot at guard and won't likely be moved unless emergency.

His take and I tend to agree with him- RT-Dorrestein RG-Huyge C- Molk LG- Schilling LT-Here Brian says deathmatch between Omameh, Lewan and Schofield. I think Dorrestein at RT and Huyge at RG makes sense given what has happened this year. When Molk went out the first guy they wanted off the bench was Dorrestein even if it meant moving two other offensive lineman. Now that Moosman is back at guard, Rodriguez says that the RT spot comes down to whoever plays better in practice between Huyge and Dorrestien. And Rodriguez has chosen Huyge over Ferrara, so we are probably looking for a left tackle. Omameh was getting a lot of spring hype and Lewan certainly has some hype behind himself as well. Another possiblity is Huyge at RT and Dorrestein at LT. Then we are looking for Ferrara, Barnum, Washington, or Mealer to step up. Should be really interesting. I think our line will just get better over the next year and a half.

I think it is more likely Huyge stays at tackle and they move Ferrara or Barnum into guard. As much as people want to buy into the hype OL is very difficult to play and almost all kids need 2 years of weights and technique to play. I don't think Lewan will be able to do that and Henderson isn't going to start either if he comes. I'd love to be proven wrong because tht would mean Lewan is an absolute bad ass and we have the next Jake Long locked in, but that's not a good bet. The Omameh and Emilien spring hype cured me from listening to the Scout "insiders" that was a joke.

He just has the best frame for tackle in this offense and will have a year of Barwis under his belt. Wouldn't surprise me if we see a good dose of him as a RS Fresh. I'm also excited to see how Pace will play out as the replacement to Molk. Seantreal is just such a long shot right now with Michigan still hovering as a middling big ten team. That might be a good sign of playing time for most recruits but he will play significantly at any school he chooses. If we could have Lewan and Henderson bookending our line then that might put Tate/Devin into heisman contention

LT - Omameh LG - Schilling C - Molk RG - Huyge RT - Dorrestein In other words, it will be exactly the same as it is right now with the exception of LT.
