Little brother tweets out lil' bro status

Submitted by Arb lover on February 4th, 2019 at 1:18 PM

In an effort to, I guess, showcase the achievements of former Spartan football players, MSU football just tweeted out to all it's potential recruits the following:

Congratulations to Brian Hoyer on becoming a Super Bowl Champion! #GoGreen #SpartansInTheNFL pic.twitter.com/qZL9p0Zc5n

— Michigan State Football (@MSU_Football) February 4, 2019

SouthOfHeaven originally posted this without a working link several pages deep in the Brady thread, so credit him, but I figured most didn't see it or the actual link.

Hope lil bro continues to tweet it's lil bro status to recruits.

How DARE they offer a congratulatory tweet to own of their alumni!!!!!!

IMO there is a ton of shit you can rightly rip MSU for but sending out a twitter high-five to one of their own after the Super Bowl isn't one of them.

No one is ripping them for congratulating a former player being on a SB winning team, it's the circumstances of the tweet.  Immediately after the game so you know it was planned out, the actual starting player at the position went to rival Michigan, and Hoyer didn't see a single snap.

He is the backup to a UM alum that has won 6 (more than anyone ever) SB as the starting QB and been in 9 (more than anyone ever) and has 3 SB MVP's (more than anyone ever).  What did Hoyer do this year?  What are his stats?

Hoyer was  1/2 for 7 yards...Edelman was 2/2 for 43 yards.

Good clipboard holding Hoyer.  Nice work.

You've missed the point entirely. Nothing wrong w/ supporting former players, even one who didn't do jack squat in the game or all season.

The reason it's pathetic is that it's an obvious attempt at replying to the forthcoming UM tweets about Brady, as if there is anything remotely comparable about the two situations.

That's why it's a Little Brother move.

How many Michigan tweets/promo materials have there been about NFL alums who seldom/ever see the field? A lot.

Hoyer is on the team. He was part of the championship. What's the problem here?

There are myriad things I dislike about the Spartan football fan base, many of which are mockable.

This, though, seems like a legitimate expression of congratulations to a Super Bowl champion.  Not "little bro" at all, in my estimation.

I agree - I think MSU is correct in offering congratulations to a super bowl winner. You have to see a touch of irony here though right?

I have no doubt that UM has promotional material for bit NFL NBA, etc players. I'm not saying this is worthy of mocking. Praising a QB for the New England Patriots and having it not be Tom Brady, but an MSU grad is pretty funny. I give sparty credit for the move.

I have a dollar in my pocket, I must be the "God" figure in whom we all trust.

I’m willing to bet that very few if any casual football fans were aware that Hoyer was even on the roster. Now that I know he was on the sideline holding a clipboard, I’m totally unimpressed.

Dude has a Super Bowl ring he can wear. More money than he can spend. Msu has every right to congratulate him. I would love to be Tom Brady's backup.

Honestly, it's not that big of a deal they congratulated him.  But MSU also did this last year with Nick Foles, who left MSU and (I believe) never even saw the field.  So it's weird how much they try to draft off the success of others even tangentially related to the school.

The first tweet that went out congratulated Hoyer for being a Super Bowl Champion...again. When someone pointed out that Hoyer hasn't actually won anything until yesterday, they deleted the tweet and replaced it with the one in the OP. Being wrong in your congratulations because your alumnus QB is so irrelevant in the NFL - that's hilarious.

Should Michigan not recognize Elvis Grbac as a Super Bowl champion? He got in at the very end of the 49ers blowout victory over the Chargers in SB XXIX. One carry, one incomplete pass.
