Didn't we determine that an (otter) entry in the directory doesn't mean much? Or, am I so confused over the entire process that I'm talking out of my butt.

Personally, I have decided to ignore the whole "otter" debacle because as I remember from my own enrollment, you need to file a deposit to create a uniqname and umich directory account. Besides, you create them yourself, and why would someone go through the effort of making one for a school he didn't plan to attend? I guess he could lose his deposit and renege on his hypothetical enrollment, but it's as good a sign as we're going to get. Beaver (not to be confused with "otter") said he was 10,000 percent committed to Michigan and then decommitted. When this "otter" commits to Michigan tomorrow, everyone can finally stop worrying.

Please, no more directory searches. It probably won't make a difference but that's not the point - it's just stalkerish. Why is it so hard to wait one day for the kid to announce? Imagine if this were your son. Would you like a bunch of complete strangers digging up his personal info on the directory and discussing it publicly? I'm guessing you wouldn't. Give the kids their personal space.

is his email. And I don't see that posted anywhere or see anyone advocating contacting him or other Michigan prospects. This is the equivalent of saying "look, LaLota is in the Ann Arbor phone book!" It's also no more or less stalkerish than reading and posting on a message board re: rumors and inside tips on where a kid plans to go to college. For God's sake, stop bitching about someone putting up a quick, informative post that indicates some strong level of Michigan interest and does not ask anyone to take things further.

Personally, I have no interest in the directory searches, the threads are boring, etc. But this is a public directory - and it's sole intent is to provide contact information (provided by the student) for people to search. That's what a student directory is, by definition. Using the student directory is akin to using a phone book. If people used the information there-in to call them, e-mail them, or post their information for other people to harass them, that would be stalkerish. Looking in the directory is the same as looking in a phone book.

Lalota has been a commitment, so the waiting one more day for him doesn't really apply. He's not making any announcement at the Army game. People were initially worried when his name wasn't on the list, so this post was probably made to assuage any fears. I'm not a huge fan of looking people up in directories, but I don't think it's that big of a deal either. It's exciting when these new guys get on campus, and although none are showing up in a stretch limo, I doubt they're totally adverse to the extra attention that being a D1 football player brings. This is the generation of accumulating "friends" on myspace and facebook, the information in the directory pales in comparison to what is on those networking sites.

... of checking the directory like that and making it public. Look for yourself if you stalkerishly want to, but dont' post about it. Kids read this kind of stuff, and to them it can be very off putting. Too many people forget that what they post about recruits is not only read by other fans, and not just that recruit, but ALL recruits.
