Kwity Paye selected to media preseason All-B1G team

Kwity Paye joins the media’s 10-person preseason All-Big Ten team, which features players from:

OSU (QB Justin Fields, OG Wyatt Davis and CB Shaun Wade)

Minnesota (QB Tanner Morgan, WR Rashod Bateman)

PSU (TE Pat Freirermuth)

Wisconsin (LB Jack Sanborn)

Purdue (WR Rondale Moore)

Northwestern (LB Paddy Fisher)

Not sure why the team is a 10-person unit rather than 22 O and D players and the four major special teams positions, but congrats to Paye on the accolade!

Hopefully the DTs can wall up and push the pocket enough to see our stout DEs operate.

Don't get me wrong, I love me some Kwity and think he's a good B1G player, but I'm a little surprised by how much pub he's getting this year with All American lists, being labeled a "freak", and getting some early first round love.  I've always seen Kwity as a solid guy rather than an explosive freak.  I've always thought he was a tick behind Charleton & Winovich.  I'd guess he's probably similar to OSU's Jonathan Cooper.  But, I see Zach Harrison putting up better numbers, maybe Hutch too.  Kwity is good, he looks great against lower competition, and he can stop the run in addition to rush the passer.  But, I've never seen him as some recent first round DE guys like Bosa, Garrett, Sweat, Charlton, etc.  He seems to disappear against Wiscy, OSU, & Bama last year.  Am I going crazy?  Either I'm off base or we're gonna be disappointed when he doesn't live up to this hype.

I hear you, with two caveats:

1. Nobody in the front 7 looked good against Wisconsin. Paye did have a sack in that game (mostly due to Mike Danna driving an OL into the QB), but also badly gave up the edge a couple of times.

2. The lack of serviceable DTs made the DEs responsible for huge gaps. Kemp would put in a valiant effort but still get blown out of the hole (or he’d take himself out the play because he tried to burst upfield to make up for being undersized), and Paye and Hutch had to cover a lot of space, especially against the power/inside zone running teams you mentioned.

I think part of it is how he's used.   Last year, Michigan really lacked interior DL and the other DE (Hutchinson) was still young so Paye had to play very responsibly.  He couldn't just put his head down and rush the passer like a Bosa or Young because of the talent around him. He still put up 6.5 sacks and 12.5 TFL(team leader).  Will he do much better in the box score this year?  Who knows, but unlikely considering the DTs are still a weak spot.

End of year will see Milton, Hutchinson, McGrone, Mayfield,  on that list.  Shocked only one player is on it now.

I remain puzzled.  I liked Paye last year but he didn't jump off the screen the way others have in the past.  I hope that I'm wrong but he seemed like a pretty solid player to me, not like an All Big Ten guy
