Klatt on JJ: If I were advising JJ, I would tell him tell him to return to school
https://youtu.be/GoJCWFfXCCk?si=_BsOeIR-xkBK7bjL&t=511
This is on Cowherd's show. Headline quote is at the 10:30 mark.
Scary thought he raised: Harbaugh could leave and take Jesse Minter with him.
January 11th, 2024 at 5:28 PM ^
Looking at our schedule next year, I would give the same advice.
January 11th, 2024 at 5:44 PM ^
Agreed. And secondly, it’s kind of a no brainer that Minter will be in the NFL next year whether that’s for Jim or John.
January 11th, 2024 at 6:12 PM ^
Minter's dad was a long time college coach, and the two of them are coaching together right now, which is pretty cool and shouldn't be taken for granted.
Minter has also been mostly a college coach in his career, unlike Mike MacDonald.
I have no idea where this "Minter = NFL guy" meme came from, but.... [citation needed]

John's gonna fire Mike Mac?
January 11th, 2024 at 6:34 PM ^
The Titans requested an interview with Mike MacDonald for the head coaching job. Doesn't mean he'll get offered but it's good to have someone lined up just in case.
January 11th, 2024 at 6:59 PM ^
There's a reasonable chance someone hires him as a head coach, he's already getting requested for interviews.
January 11th, 2024 at 7:20 PM ^
Wow, I knew he was killing it but underestimated how fast he'd climb. Awesome for him, I stand corrected
January 11th, 2024 at 6:10 PM ^
I don't follow. The guy that just won a NC should suddenly be so scared of next year's schedule that he should bolt... for the NFL?
January 11th, 2024 at 6:17 PM ^
I'm not advising him to leave. The opposite. I have sound reasons. Breaking in a new QB against Texas, WA, USC, Oregon, and OSU is bad for my fandom.
January 11th, 2024 at 6:43 PM ^
Everyone but Texas is also breaking in new quarterbacks as well. It’d be more about who else comes back and what pieces do we get out of the portal.
January 11th, 2024 at 6:59 PM ^
The other schools have experienced QBs coming in, except USC, which basically decided not to pursue the portal after their backup QB threw 6 TDs in the bowl game.
January 11th, 2024 at 10:53 PM ^
I'm pretty sure they snatched UNLV's QB and threw him in a van in the dead of night last week.
January 11th, 2024 at 7:12 PM ^
If the guy with the 73% completion percentage and championship experience comes back, I'd say that's the biggest piece of the puzzle.
Look forward to his decision either way, but I'd be pretty excited about next year if he returns.
January 11th, 2024 at 5:28 PM ^
Whatever JJ does, I will never stop rooting for that kid. If he comes back, I will savor every snap he takes for us. If he decides to declare, I will hope that my Vikings can draft him, and wherever he goes, cheer him on throughout his career (and inevitably draft him in fantasy.)
January 11th, 2024 at 5:33 PM ^
If the Vikings draft him I’m going to have to start going to their games. He would have a couple incredible weapons. That OL tho.
January 11th, 2024 at 5:38 PM ^
Right? The Vikings front office reportedly are fans of his. Can you imagine him throwing to JJ, Addison, and Hockenson? Hopefully his mobility can come into play and help him navigate the o-line a bit. But I can't get too ahead of myself, I still have a national championship for our Wolverines to savor! I just get so excited thinking about getting to cheer him on for my team, college or pro!
January 11th, 2024 at 6:37 PM ^
JJ to JJ? Or, JJ from JJ?
January 11th, 2024 at 8:02 PM ^

As a Bears fan my nightmare was that the Packers would take him when Love was struggling earlier in the year. The good news/bad news is that Love improved and I doubt they will be looking to take a QB. But of course the Packers will spend exactly 0 years in the QB wilderness the Bears have been in since forever.
January 11th, 2024 at 6:16 PM ^
I hope not for his sake. No one should be forced to wear those ugly purple jerseys.
January 11th, 2024 at 6:38 PM ^
Hey now, there's no need for shots like that. We just won a national championship!
January 11th, 2024 at 10:41 PM ^
vlady, first, you have killer photoshop skills.
second, this is better than that abomination you sometimes put up with urban wearing our gear.
third, please don't deface our harbaugh unit.
thank you
January 11th, 2024 at 5:28 PM ^
Minter following Harbaugh has always been a real possibility.
I would even go further and say it's likely.
January 11th, 2024 at 6:48 PM ^
Yeah I'm prepared for just having Sherrone Moore back next year as HC. Minter-Harbaugh make a great pair, and Harbaugh loves having a close trusted DC
January 11th, 2024 at 5:29 PM ^
I was assuming Harbaugh would take Minter to the pros. Or, if McDonald gets a HC job somewhere, then Minter goes to DC at Ravens.
But no worries, undoubtedly there is an assistant DC in Baltimore who would just transfer to UM for a couple years. That's how this works... right?
(TBH, I am still holding out hope that Ravens win the SB this year, so... John retires from NFL coaching, Jim takes the Ravens gig, and John comes to UM. Like... there's a chance, right?)
January 11th, 2024 at 5:31 PM ^
I have no idea, but you'd think the Ravens would have someone under the DC who was ready to take over. Especially if they've already developed many others.
January 11th, 2024 at 5:41 PM ^
If MacDonald gets a HC job, Minter would certainly follow him because they're close buddies from my understanding.
January 11th, 2024 at 5:30 PM ^
It's a weird situation in my opinion, because I do think his ceiling is much higher than he's shown, but I'm not sure a team with no Roman, CJ, or Barner helps him get closer to that ceiling. If he's getting first rd feedback it might not be a horrible idea to just go. Obviously I'd love it if he returned though.
January 11th, 2024 at 5:32 PM ^
I'm less worried about who he's throwing to than I am about him being given a chance to showcase the talent and abilities the NFL wants to see on a regular basis.
15-20 passing attempts a game isn't gonna warm the NFL's cockles. They wanna see a larger sample size.
January 11th, 2024 at 5:38 PM ^
And he will have that chance w/o Corum.
This draft class is loaded and he'll potentially battle Ewers for the top pick next season. I think he'll benefit from another year to increase his draft stock.
January 11th, 2024 at 6:35 PM ^
But, again, he does need RECEIVERS. Right now he doesn't have nearly enough.
January 11th, 2024 at 7:09 PM ^
And he will have that chance w/o Corum.
Will he though? Are they gonna change the whole offensive philosophy next year? Or are you assuming Harbaugh is gone and the new coach runs a more passer friendly offense?
January 12th, 2024 at 12:08 AM ^
Depends on which pieces return. Fact is no two teams are identical and you have to tweak your offense to fit your personnel even if you maintain the same core offensive philosophy.
January 12th, 2024 at 9:15 AM ^
I'd bet the NFL looks at quality when evaluating players rather than quantity. If he's able to show out with 15-20 attempts a game, I bet they'd believe he could show out at 25-30 attempts a game. There's probably little difference in those extra 10 pass attempts.
January 11th, 2024 at 5:31 PM ^
I do love me some Joel Klatt analysis.
January 11th, 2024 at 5:31 PM ^
I think it's very important for M that JJ is drafted well and is a successful pro. He doesn't put up the same gawdy stats because of the offense he runs and that can scare recruits and scouts.
If he is drafted well and plays well at the next level that will assuage a lot of fears to keep our QB pool full of prospects.
January 12th, 2024 at 12:18 AM ^
I think that being "drafted well" may have more to do with going to a stable situation where he has some time to acclimate and learn behind a veteran than being taken early and immediately being thrown in the fire at a bad franchise that doesn’t invest in right pieces. There are plenty of teams that churn through QBs and WRs picks that are perpetual doormats. You want JJ to go to a place where they build from the inside out. It starts on the OL. If you can’t protect him he won’t be successful. Having at least a functional defense also would help because if he is constantly playing from behind then he won’t be able to utilize the running game to take some pressure of his development as an NFL passer.
January 11th, 2024 at 5:31 PM ^
He would take Minter and Moore with him. I don’t think he leaves but he totally would/should.
January 11th, 2024 at 5:48 PM ^
Taking Moore would really screw over Michigan. We’d be at square 1 for the coaching carousel with Alabama in the market.
January 11th, 2024 at 6:24 PM ^
I was listening to sports radio in the car today. Not even sure who. Their opinion by the way was Michigan was a better job. More realistic and supportive fan base with tradition and resources. Following Saban is a high risk play.
They said UW coach Deboer would be a leading candidate to replace Harbaugh.
Which I find curious because I can’t imagine Moore would not stay and take the head job.
January 11th, 2024 at 5:33 PM ^
Unless we portal a few WR I’m not sure coming back is his best option,
January 11th, 2024 at 5:40 PM ^
Loveland, Morris, Morgan and even Edwards out of the backfield are a solid receiving group to build upon...
January 11th, 2024 at 6:10 PM ^
Not really. That's fairly slim pickings, except for Loveland. And Donovan isn't converting to receiver even if he comes back, which may not happen.
January 11th, 2024 at 5:33 PM ^
I'll freak everyone out even more than just taking Minter - Would guess he takes Herbert too.
January 11th, 2024 at 6:50 PM ^
I'm not sure Herbert's style would work in the pros
January 11th, 2024 at 7:40 PM ^
Yeah I don’t think so. Strength/conditioning in the NFL is completely different. By the time players are in the league they are developed as much as they are going to be.
