KenPom ranks every D-1 basketball program the past 22 years
Michigan ranks 24th. No surprised at the the top.
I would make the argument that you'd rather be someone like UConn and say screw the overall rankings, we have 4 rings.
i went to HS next to UConn. I had lived in Storrs for 8+ years.
no one really should want to be like UConn.
I would not have guessed the Illinois would be one spot ahead of us, post-Fisher years notwithstanding. Also I was surprised to see Ohio State as high as 11. And I was disgustipated to see MSU at 6 (not surprised, just disgustipated).
Yeah, it would've been nice if you could filter by conference but definitely some surprising B1G numbers.
Kind of amazing that MSU has 8 Final Fours (tied with UNC for most) but has only managed to win one, and it came in the last century.
It would be cool to see this change year over year. Michigan is being weighted down by the pre-Beilein years, but has shot up in the last decade. Plenty of others in the top 20 are going the other direction - success 20 years ago is propping them up, but they're not doing much nowadays.
If you exclude championships, UConn is almost a mirror image of Michigan: lots of historical success getting dragged down by recent ineptitude.
Not sure I agree with that. All of UConn's historical success has come within the timeframe this KenPom list includes.
That was the point that I was trying to make, but, upon further review, my comment did not make that clear. I had positioned UConn and Michigan as follows:
- UConn: Great from 1997-2010, not so hot from 2011-2019 (2014 excepted)
- Michigan: Not so great from 1997-2009, great from 2010-2019.
Would be interesting to see where we'd be if it were 10 years
Someone did that (can't remember where). We were like 11th, just behind State.
I was disappointed to see how many of the bottom 30 I've seen come to Crisler and play. Stop scheduling crappy teams!
That's the thing - teams like MSU have been incredibly consistent and have one title from a decade and a half ago to show for it. UConn blows up every couple of years but has more titles than anyone over that span.
I guess the alternative case would be to point to Kansas, which has been one of the dirtier programs for decades and has 1 title to show for it.
Also shows how difficult it is to win the title. 13 teams have won titles in the past 23 seasons (not 22 seasons, as the title states). Of those, there are 7 one-time winners. Six teams (Duke, Kentucky, UNC, Villanova, Florida, UConn) have combined to win the other 16 titles.
Also, the block was clean.

UConn hasn't really been that up and down. They were at a high level for a pretty long stretch, and have now been on a steady decline for 5-6 years. It will be interesting to see if they can get back there being in the Big East, and with Hurley.
The time span blows for us.
If he pushes it back 15 more years to 1983 to present, we're likely near top 10.
If he pulls it up to last 10 years to 2007 to present, we're also likely top 10.
This ranking is entirely invalidated by UConn ending up ranked 19th but having more national championships than anyone in that time period. I mean come on.
There's also a future projection aspect of it
It's a combination of what they've done, where they are now, and what they'll be in the future
