Jim Harbaugh Calls out Urban Meyer on Podcast
Jim Harbaugh went on Tim Kawakami's podcast recently--one of the NFL writers who thought Michigan fans were stupid for thinking Harbaugh would ever leave the NFL.
On this podcast, Harbaugh talks about the upcoming season and his recent seasons at Michigan. However, he also calls out Urban Meyer by stating:
"Urban Meyer's had a winning record. Really phenomenal record everywhere he's been. But also, controversey follows everywhere he's been."
No lies detected...how do you feel about Harbaugh saying this? Link to the podcast is below, warning it is on the Athletic and for subscribers only.
It’s the truth, so it’s fine. People will be mad, and inevitably bring up Jim’s record against him, but Jim didn’t say Urban wasn’t a great coach. It’s not a silly comment.
Hearing Harbaugh speak about domestic violence and sexual assault on a few occasions, it seems like it's an issue he's genuinely passionate about. The Zach Smith cover-up thing in particular must have being abhorrent to him, especially the cover-up, the non-apology, the stupid excuses, and then the fanbase attacking the victim.
Warriner knew
Yup, which is why he bolted for, and still coaches for, the good guys
That is not exactly the path he took.
Yeah, he has coached for all of our major rivals - Illinois, Minnesota, Army...
Oh, and also msu, osu, and nd.
Warriner in no position to do anything though. Zach didn't work for him, wasn't he special teams?
No, Zach Smith was the WR coach under Ed Warriner when he was OSU’s OC.
He was also his bosses best little buddy. What the fuck was he supposed to do? Tank his own career because Urban runs a scummy program.
You expect too much out of people. I hope you're perfect.
We could also take the view that how Warriner reacted was understandable while not being his greatest moment. He was not totally wrong and not totally right. Also, his actions do not make him a bad person. Is that kind of nuanced view allowable anymore?
Is that kind of nuanced view allowable anymore?
On the internet? No.
Coordinators don't hire or fire assistant coaches. Scott Shafer may have once wished that were untrue.
They may put in a good word for somebody when a position opens up. I don't doubt Don Brown had a hand in bringing in Al Washington.
But just take a look at Michigan's assistants on offense. The main ones coming and going have been the coordinators. I don't think we could point to a single one of them and say he was hired by the OC at the time. You could go back as many years as you like. Putting together and supervising his staff are two of the main jobs of a head coach.
Position coaches don't report to the OC. I don't know if that's what you're implying or not, but an important distinction.
No. Warriner was there as OC and Smith worked under him. Whatever though, as long as the narrative fits your need.
Harbaugh must literally sit around and sulk all day. Meyer lives rent-free in his head 24/7/365.
Ref's got him a serious pimp hand!
Ooooo he got Zach Smith'd!

It’s so damn true. Urban the Liar’s Core Values are a joke.

While absolutely true, how does it help him coach this season and beat them? In some sense this possibly gives THEEEEEEEEE ohio more bulletin board material.
If that's the best material they have available then I don't think it's going to be an effective motivation tool.
It's not the best they have. The fake twitter post was better.
As far as bulletin board material goes this is pretty weak.
Oh no, bulletin board material for Ohio State. This might cause them to devote their program to beating Michigan and hate us to an unimaginable degree. Oh wait...
How ??? Never underestimate the power of psychology. And this is the start of Harbaugh's mindblitz, and I welcome it. Dantoni has been nailing us for a long while now with his very calculated disses, which do affect things. If anything, it is helping condition his own players, mentally. Bo did this well.
Mork sure as shit motivated me. Believe me old man; it's not over; and it never will be.
Ehhh it’s not a good look. He calls Urban out after he retired while never speaking negatively about him when he was still coaching. Gives it the feel of “the bully moved away so now I’ll talk smack”. Would have been better to leave it unsaid.
There's nothing wrong with what Harbaugh said, and I never have a problem with calling out an unscrupulous rival.
I'd love to see that on their bulletin board.
Win this one for your coach who quit! Who was only suspended for part of last season!
Their players know Harbaugh spoke the truth. If OSU's players and coaches are still worrying about Meyer and what people say about him, it's hard to see that working in their favor.
So what
The last 15 years proves OSU doesn’t need “bulletin board material” to beat us.
Bulletin boards don't win football games.
"We all know games aren't played on paper. They're played inside TV sets."
God, I hope Urban running up the score on us last season is far more greater bulletin board material for Michigan than what ever slight comment Harbaugh made about Urban.
Maybe 15 years of destruction might be a tad bit more motivating than a singular ass kicking.
Almost makes me wish they didn’t take a knee twice with second and goal at the 7 with :49 left in a the game. /s
Do you think they could be any more motivated already? That's like saying "oh boy, that gives MSU more bulletin board material."
These two programs live and breathe for the sole purpose of beating Michigan. They can't get any more amped up than they already are.
Disappointed. JH didn't need to go there even if he was goaded into the question. Meyer answered a question last year at the B1G meetings and it essentially did him in. Be smarter than the reporters that are just looking for something controversial to write.
Harbaugh isn't the sort of guy who is afraid to share a well reasoned opinion. Urban had a 100% win rate against Harbaugh/Michigan and kicked ass all over CFB. He's also a scummy fuck.
Both true.
*100% win rate While at OSU. Never forget Lloyd’s curtain call.
I was talking about Harbaugh coached teams only, but yeah. Lloyd managed to spank him down.
A scummy fuck that everyone on this board would gleefully welcome as head coach.
You’re rather stupid if you think that’s true.
Fuck. No.
No. Hell no. I didn't feel comfortable about the RR hire due to the acrimony he caused leaving WVU, without even knowing the scummy things he did later.
I will disavow my UM fandom before accepting blatantly dirty (even if successful) coaches such as Meyer, Carroll, Pitino, Dantonio, Izzo, Saban, Freeze, Williams, and many others of similar ilk. Winning doesn't mean more to me than having a soul.
False. Kindly name one major head coach Michigan has ever hired that came with a checkered past. We're arrogant because we do things the right way except sometimes we cheat really badly by having players stretch an extra 15 minutes. Extra stretching is our one weakness. Ask Mike RosenRosen.
Legitimate due diligence into the RR hire would have yielded a "checkered past."
Legitimate due diligence into the RR hire would have yielded... a different coach.
