Jalen Rose Arrest Report Emerges

Submitted by Geaux_Blue on

Local news profiled the incident with video so I presume this is available on the internets in some capacity:

Claimed he "does not drink," seems to intentionally avoid blowing into the machine properly multiple (3-5 times at least), can't walk a straight line or even lift his leg up for longer than 8 seconds.

Forgets where he's going while under arrest and has to be told repeatedly where he's being taken (jail), why he's under arrest (drunk driving) or what .08 means ("what's .8?").

Flat out ridiculous. His public comments are an embarrassment in hindsight as he tried to make it out as if he was the victim of circumstance and confusion. Instead he's obviously a liar who got caught breaking the law and then did a ridiculous campaign of damage control that is absurd.

These efforts are almost on par with the MSU athletes' when confronted by police. Count me out of his fan club. TIA.

First of all .088 for a man that is 6'8 is not very impaired. Even after two hours if your blood alcohol level is .088 doesn't mean that it was significantly higher prior to the test. This was the night of fab five documentary release at the Michigan Theatre. It was snowing and his car went off the road. SUV's do that. I am not saying that drinking and driving is ok, but you are crucifying him over the release of this video. The link is below. It is snowing outside and I think I would have a hard time lifting a leg on standing on snow in the middle of a snow storm. The guy had a few beers after his celebratory film screening and probably didn't feel that impaired. His speech doesn't sound slurred at all. He seemed to be taking a breathalyzer multiple times and who wouldn't try to say they hadn't been drinking in this situation. This is not a good situation but it's not THAT bad. You people need to relax and let the man move on.

Checked... The SUV-overconfident thing is the lamest excuse for poor driving skills ever invented. I have driven through every bad weather event you can imagine in virtually every conceivable kind of vehicle. They don't just flip over on their own. If you're "impaired" it is of course much more likely you will have a problem.

Let me add to that...I know dozens of people with SUVs who drive in snow all the time and have never had an accident. So yeah, I am a very good driver, but far from unusual. The NY Times article notwithstanding there is not an epidemic of people flipping SUVs in the snow.

Jalen Rose was drunk...that is the reality of the situation. The only good to come from a situation like this is no one was hurt or killed.

Why do you all care so much? I'm confident Jalen could give a fuck if any of you got in trouble in your personal lives. He has better things to do. So should you.

abandon your friends and family like that.

A screw up is a screw up--shouldn't be glossed, like you say. But what is this creepy American thing we all have that we want to dig into other people's lives (a) and then get off dumping on them? Bit of a sickness, with media as our enablers. . .

Edit: My best high school friend lost her husband to a drunk driver, so I understand that we need to get a grip on this, not tolerate drunk driving. It's the trashing people part that I don't get. Rant over.

i'm publicly noting that the story was completely opposite of how he presented it. after his comments i believed he basically was the victim of an ever-decreasing BAC threshold. more or less got into an understandable accident given poor winter conditions and got knocked for being 'barely over.' watching the news video, he had no business being in public, much less a bar. how do you forget 2-3 times over the course of 20 minutes a) why you're in the back of a cop car, b) what crime you committed and c) where you're going?

and i can guarantee to you if one of my friends or family begrudginly admitted to an OWI 3 weeks later with the caveat it 'wasn't a big deal and just a minor mistake' and then these details emerged, i'd be inherently disappointed in their character and lying to me.

i'm not getting off on this. i'm noting that one of our most outspoken alumni is just as bad as the people we mock from other schools.

I am not excusing this in any way as I do not know all the facts. However, is it possible that he hit his head when he flipped the SUV and was concussed and that is why he couldn't remember facts? Obviously he shouldn't have been driving, but there might be other explanations as to his behavior.

wouldn't that come up when he had to do the sobriety tests? "hey i can't do this well,i feel wobbly." maybe he coudln't remember because he has a brain parasite! or maybe he couldn't remember because if he faked he didn't remember the kidnappers wouldn't kill his family. or maybe...

stop inventing excuses for him when they're purely speculation.

My mother and I were hit by a drunk driver in an estimated combined collision of 95mph when I was 14. Her ankle and knee had to be wired back together, her lung collapsed, her nose was broken, her lip was split from the corner of her mouth down and across the opposite side of her chin and was literally hanging off of her gums. (BTW, that was a horrible day, Michigan lost the Rose Bowl, TSIO won the Cotton Bown and then the accident) This was 24 years ago and she still struggles with the affects of those injuries. The man that was driving was released from the hospital the next day before toxicology results were back and left the state and never had to face charges. Please do not think that I am excusing Jalen for driving drunk. He should NOT have been driving the vehicle. However, if a person was in a vehicle that flipped, and was suffering from obvious memory loss, I would not automatically assume it was because he blew a .088.

But to me it's a different class of animal from beating people up (say) and running from the cops, not just because it's less aggressive-ugly but because it didn't happen on Michigan's watch.

Guess my response is a bit more charitable and (I will admit) it may be colored by my sympathy for Jalen.

Jalen is an idiot for drinking & driving. I do not condone that.

With that said, I'd prefer they leave Jalen alone and let him handle his legal problems privately... there are plently of other UM affiliated ex-athletes (some with 3 DUIs) that do not receive as much media coverage. Yes those ex-athletes do not have as big of a mouth as Jalen, but I don't care as I am still a Fab Five supporter. Go Blue!

I am a teacher, and if I do something stupid that endangers a child.....I accept the fact that it will be posted all over the media. If I worked in the National media and I got arrested for a DUI, yes, I would expect that it will make national media attention. If you cannot accept that this is the way our world is, then do not accept a job where this is a reality. Can't take the money and fame without the responsibility.

Leashing out on Mr. Rose. Dude he's Jalen, not Pete Rose. Let the man have his day in court, we all know Espn has told him behind the scenes, nothing else would be tolerated or he is out.

JR made the wrong choice, let the consequences play out and move on.

This is a blog...he is entitled to express an opinion about a guy being arrested for drunk driving. Do you understand how many people are killed by drunk drivers? Lives ruined? What are you defending? And what does this have to do with Pete Rose?

Sorry, some things just set me off and this is one

I fully agree that what he did is indefensible . . . but why would you want to watch that video? I'd just find it incredibly cringe-worthy.

All the speculation about how much Rose drank and how his BAC level would flucuate or not, or how big he is, etc., is a fool's adventure. He could easily have smoked a blunt with those 'three beers' some of you refer to, been overtired/exhausted, or taken some other controlled substance for that matter. but you don't know and won't know, so chill. Drunk driving is poor judgment, very poor judgment. It's just another reminder of that. And there is no double-standard, I hope, for UM athlete conduct and other school's athlete conduct.

Someone got drunk! He drove!! Break out the pitchforks !!!

Seriously. People make a dumb decision and this community jumps on them. Of course he is doing damage control, he is going to court. I doubt no one here has never had a bit more than they should have and then drove. Or got in a vehicle with a drunk driver at some point.
