Jake Rudock to Lions Practice Squad

Submitted by Michigan4Life on

As expected, Jake Rudock cleared waiver and will be on the Lions practice squad. That has been the plan all along.

I don't understand the love for Dan Orlovsky, but it moving Rudock to the practice squad worked out as he went unclaimed...so lets not scream SOL for a move that actually worked as planned.

because backup/3rd string QBs rarely get picked up on the waiver wire.  If they were afraid that Rudock would get claimed, they wouldn't have cut him.

They want Orlovsky because they prefer an extra set of eyes on game film and during game when looking at defensive tendencies. Rudock isn't experienced enough to be able to do it plus Orlovsky isn't PS eligible and Rudock is.

I know this sort of thing happens often, but with so many QB situations seemingly in flux I got a little paranoid that someone might snatch him for some reassurance. Also, you're welcome for the thread, I think.

This sucks for Jake.  I was hoping that he could Escape the Lions early in his career before he is Mc Doomed....

If your starting QB goes down, you're basically screwed for the rest of the game anyway and it's extremely unlikely that a team will need a 3rd string QB as a result of injuries of the two QBs. It isn't college football....

Other positions need more help because they are being used more than the QB who only use one player at any point in the game.

Anybody remember a practice squad QB later making a roster? Seems like even late-round guys who make it at least start as backups or as a third QB.

In a league where Shaun Hill, ____ McCown, and Dan Orlovsky seem to be able to hang around forever, it seems like once Rudock gets a chance to be No 2 he should be able to run with it.

Hey, he wasn't even going to make it this far if it wasn't for  his development last year at michigan.. One year of development got his foot in the door.

I'm sure he's a little disappointed but after a year with harbaugh I'm also sure he knows that if he works on what he needs to work on, he will get to see the field someday.

Best of luck to Jake. He really held it down for us last year when the defensive injuries started piling up.  (Imagine if Rudock was already in late-season form at the beginning of last season.... actually, perish that thought. It's a trap)

Best of luck to him.

If the Lions think sticking around with Dan Orlovsky as their backup is a better option...well...then there's a reason that they're the fucking Lions.

Incompetent decision after incompetent decision for the last 50 years. As long as the Fords are running the show, that's not going to change.

Honestly, he should look for another team.  The Lions aren't really going anywhere, and a coaching staff with a better handle on QBs might have some use for him; not saying he'd be a starter, but he'd at least have a chance to learn how to be a QB.  Heck, he'd learn more as part of Harbaugh's staff.

Hopefully Caldwell will finally get swept out of town. He's really an uninspiring coach and I think really incompetent (Hail Mary, clock management). The jury is still out on the GM, but you gotta hope he had an idea what he's doing? He just should have axed Caldwell after last season IMO.

Hopefully he will get another chance in the future. He certainly deserves the opportunity more than Orlo.
