Jake Butt moving on from the Broncos

Jake Butt is moving on from the Broncos.

As a Michigan grad who lives in Colorado, this makes me sad. Poor Jake gave his all for us but has just been snake bit. For the brief moments he made it on the field here he looked good.

I hope he is able to catch on with another team and stay healthy.

A little glad honestly. With Fant as the top TE at Denver it was never likely that Butt would be given a chance for consistent playing time, especially with his injury history. Hopefully another team more strapped for TE will give him that chance and he has recovered to move past his injuries and come back at 100%

I also live in Colorado and been pulling for Him ever since he got here. Not surprised to see the Broncos part ways with him. They were very patient and gave him every chance but he just couldn’t stay healthy. Hopefully he gets another chance can stay healthy and live up to his talent. Good luck Jake

I'll sure be pulling for him and always felt for him when he tore his ACL in the Orange Bowl.  But, I won't feel bad for anyone in the NFL that has made over $2 million.  He has enough to be set for life like many on this board would kill for.  I hope he does great, but don't think of him as "poor" nor feel like he's been snake bitten.  He was blessed with lots of great opportunities, has worked hard and made the most of them, and is financially stable.  Wish him luck, rooting for him, but don't feel bad for him.

Not criticizing your point and I agree that he is blessed to be financially stable. But there would have to be some disappointment for any player in this position. These guys have lived for their sport for so long that it has to be difficult for them to accept that things are not gonna work out the way they could have. Kudos to Jake. He's busted his butt (no pun intended) to get back. But man, I can only imagine that there'll always be 'what could've been' thoughts going through his (or anyone else in his position's) head.

There is, but I think it's misguided to feel bad for a millionaire professional athlete.  Many people work hard in their lives for life long goals that are never fully achieved.  This is no different.  And, many athletes work hard for a long time and get injuries that derail their careers.  This happens all the time.  Getting a second contract in the NFL is very hard.  It's no run of the mill goal.  Of course he'd be disappointed if he never gets it, no different than I'd be disappointed if I never reached my ultimate career goal.  But, he's already in the top echelon.  I'd be disappointed if I was him too.  I'm also disappointed I broke my ankle and didn't play professional baseball, but no one felt sorry for me and I never made millions.  I just don't like the idea of feeling sorry for professional athletes who live a very blessed life.  I think there should be some perspective there.  Root for him?...heck year.  Feel sorry for him?...no way.  I'd love to tear my ACL a few times to be a millionaire professional athlete and get to pick and chose IF I decide to work for the rest of my life versus being forced to work a job I may or may not like for the next 20 years (after already working 15 years) before I can afford to retire.

I get your point, tons of people out there in a position deserving our empathy or sympathy much more than this guy (despite the terrible knee issues at the apex of his career). You are totally not wrong

Is $2 million in the NFL really enough to be "set for life" tho? I mean after agent fees and all that other shit. Not shaking a stick at $2 million, posing a question

$2.1 million in the bank?...probably.  That's $100,000/year for 21 years...plenty to comfortably live off and assuming you invest it you're earning compounding interest over that time.  That's almost twice what I make and I have a master's degree (and he'd be doing nothing whereas I'll be working FT).  $2.1 million career earnings before taxes?...I'm not sure because I don't know how much of that he keeps.  But, he also will reap all the benefits of being a star at UM and an NFL player that would open up all sorts of other opportunities after his playing career is over in coaching, broadcasting, etc.  He's an articulate, smart, clean cut guy that people like and can relate to.  I'm sure he'll earn way more in his career earnings as a byproduct of his playing success, plus his playing career isn't over yet.  I think you get my point...he's blessed to have what many would love to even despite his disappointing injury history.
