Jacksonville Camp Battles: Running Backs

Submitted by justingoblue on

This video doesn't have anything groundbreaking, but any excuse for talkin' Denard is a good one.

TJ Yeldon seems likely to start and take a majority of carries, but with Gerhart looking like a better receiving option, Denard could definitely carve out a big role with Jacksonville this season. Last season he put up some of the biggest rushing totals in the league between Gerhart going down and his own injury.

There is a snippet in there confirming plans to get Shoelace involved on kickoffs.

No idea how to embed this so here's a ridiculously long link.

Best in the league. I love shoelace I mean outside of Woodson Michigan hasn't had a player of his likeness. I loved watching him play and his demeanor off the field as well. But he is not a top RB in the league. He had flashes to show he belongs.

I don't know how much good comparing special players does at the end of the day (a guy who likes khakis recently said, "You don't compare, you especially don't compare great to great.") but I'm pretty confident Woodson would never say what the poster above said.

You cant compare great to great especially when they play different positions on the field. Who knows what Denards career would look like if he played DB or even full time RB in college. The most important thing is that they are both outstanding human beings and excellent representatives from The University of Michigan.

I love me some Denard, but the comparison between Woodson and Robinson ins't close.

Woodson is a Heisman trophy winner and is one of, if not the, best cornerback/defensive player of all time in college football. He won a National Championship. He beat MSU and OSU consistently.

Denard was a dynamic playmaker, but rarely won the big game. He completed 57% of his passes. He did, however carry a depleted team and was a truly special playmaker.

However, when you compare what the two meant to this school, then I agree that both were truly elite representatives of this great University.

Surely you jest. Take a step back and really think about what Michigan football would've been without denard from 2010-12. There would be no sugar bowl in 2012, no citrus bowl in 2012, no gator bowl in 2010.
Before you come back with a bu bu but Devin was great in 2012. Devin looked great because defenses had tape on and prepared for Denard. Denard kept us in the game against Ohio in 2012 in spite of devin. For all the mistakes Denard made, and he made some, he was something that defensive coordinators had to seriously prepare for even when he had one arm.
Outside of Woodson, Denard was the single most important Michigan player in my lifetime. He kept the program afloat at its lowest point.
I seriously would hate to see where we'd be without him.
Don't worry, I'll wait...
Three? Sheridan? Tater tots, Bellamy? Gardner?

As a quarterback, I agree, Denard was not one of the best or even better players on the field. But as a pure athlete, Denard is comparable or just under Woodson. He meant just as much to the team as Woodson did to his respective team. Imagine what our record would have been if Denard wasn't there to bail us out time after time.

When Denard had a good defense he was a BCS Sugar Bowl champ. I dunno what you expect him to do? "Better" Michigan QBs couldn't win BCS bowls or beat OSU with far better supporting casts and good-elite defenses, WRs, and O-lines. Or maybe you forgot our last National Title was in 1997. We've had plenty of good pro QBs since then yet they still couldn't move the needle to make UM elite. How quick we forget our history. Denard was a warrior, elite athlete, and great ambassador for UM and his legacy would've been much different of he had a better team around him. No slight to the many guys who busted their butts in the last 8 years, but they weren't '97 or even '06.

Are you high?

I'm not sure that I've ever seen a player carry a team as much as Denard did for three straight years. Without him the dumpster fire would have been a dumpster inferno. I thought you people would shut up after the disaster that our offense became as soon as Denard left.

Guy freaking carried us.

Played in a pick-your-poison type offense in which there was no other poison to pick. Never had a true home run threat at RB with him in the backfield, no game breakers at WR (except for Gallon)...still put up huge numbers

He did turn it over too much. I assume you think Cindy Crawford's mole makes her look hideous??

I really enjoyed following Denard's progress last year as he had several good games with the Jaguars. Hopefully he can continue to carve out a role for himself in the league and at least qualify for an NFL pension. He is fast and elusive, so I won't bet against him.
