Jack Coan named Wisconsin starting QB

Coan has gotten the majority of the 1st team reps this summer over freshman "phenom" Graham Mertz. Coan looked bad last year as a RS Fr when playing instead of Hornibrook. So when Michigan travels to Wisconsin we'll either be seeing a mediocre at best Jack Coan with less than 10 career games played or a true freshman in his first or second career start, more likely the former.

While my brain says, “Make the mediocre QB beat us,” my heart says “He’ll have the G**damn game of his f***ing life against us before immediately reverting back to mediocre trash the next week.”

Wisconsin seems to get Michigan either in the first conference game or the week before OSU regularly.  Because it happens so much, I assume they angle for that.  And since they probably angle for it, I assume that they spend a lot of the preseason prepping for Michigan so they can drop a bomb on us.  This is the only reason I won't take UW for granted on the road.  Michigan will probably be in a battle for much of the game.

Wisconsin needs a guy who can manage the offense and not turn it over. Not surprising to me that they're going with the more experienced guy. Their rushing offense is gonna be a force. Mertz will be fine.

Wisconsin (right now) doesn't have a lot to work with at WR. That could change if Cephus is back in the lineup by the Michigan game, but the odds of him being in game shape by then are probably minimal.

Either way, I trust LeVert to lock down one side of the field, and if Ambry is back by then, I think Michigan is in good shape.

I wonder if Taylor is going to be looking ahead to his pro career and not want to carry the ball 30x a game. Hopefully he tells the coaches to cool it with the workload.

That said, he's gonna run for treefiddy on us for sure.

Game plan: put 8-9 guys in the box, stop Jonathan Taylor at all costs, and force Jack Coan to beat you with his arm. This probably has to be part of the game plan no matter what, considering how thin we are at DT, we're facing a Heisman-caliber RB, and a team that routinely churns out wooly mammoths on the OL.

For me, the X-Factor in this game is that second corner spot. LeVert is going to be just fine holding his man down. If Ambry is back, I think Michigan is in good shape. If he's not, and we have Vincent Gray out there, you just have to hope he can hold up against whatever Wisconsin throws at him. I imagine if Ambry is still sidelined, Chryst will be telling Coan to look at Gray's side of the field and say "throw it that way."

How do we feel about Coan, guys?

a sinister part of me worries he’ll morph into hornibrook - that is, a solid starter capable of the occasional excellent pass/game - by the time he plays us.

The logical part of me? I got hardcore Steven threet vibes when I saw him play last. If he can’t threaten vertically, JT’s heisman chances will take a big time hit...
