Its Memorial Day Weekend - What Are You Doing?

Submitted by XM - Mt 1822 on May 26th, 2023 at 7:36 PM

Mates,

It is the first holiday weekend of the summer and the weather from the UP down to those of you living on the border with the Worst State Ever will be fantastic.  Get outside -  garden, go for a walk, a run, a bike ride, get your boat in the water, get your motorcycle out and ride and go have some fun.

Our state's motto is a truism:

"Si quaeris peninsulam amoenam, circumspice," meaning; "If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you"

We are blessed to live in one of the most beautiful states in the union so take advantage of it.

1.  What are your weekend plans?

2.  Since it's Friday, what is on your BBQ/plate and/or in your cup?

Have a great weekend,

XM

We're moving in T minus 6 days so I am packing. My husband is working this weekend, including Monday, so It's up to me to get everything in finalized order. As for the drink, I'm planning on doing this sober but I have a stash of liquor just in case desperate times call for a shot or two. Hopefully I'll be able to catch some of the Michigan baseball games tomorrow.

Preparing for my drive to Michigan next week. Month and a half trip split between Michigan, Hawaii (10 day visit to see my brother) and I'll shuffle off to Buffalo for two weeks.

There's just something about crossing the border and seeing the "Welcome to Michigan" sign. After 23 years out of state, it still feels like home. Can't wait!

1. This weekend: getting all the yard work done before leaving town.

2. Tonight: drinking Summer Shandy and reading a good book.

Cheers, all!

Pretty sure that second one is the one I pass on 69 entering the state.

Had a really cool experience after just crossing into Michigan there a few years ago. A group of about 20 motorcycles were in front of me and, before I could pass, a few of them merged into the passing lane to block me. They were going exactly the speed limit, so I didn't know what they were doing. Sure enough, about a mile up the road there was a cop in the median looking for speeders. Once we passed the cop, they got back over to let me pass. Saved me from a ticket for sure.

the coldwater cottage inn has a very good spicy med deep dish right off I69.  the few times I have frequented the staff is usually partially outstandingly cute.   add a few wings and you are set for a day or two...  the cops are just trying to find donuts there as per the signs.

That was nice of the bikers!  However, coming in on 23 is a different experience.  Once you cross the line the speed limit opens up to 70 - and if you're not doing 85, GTF outta the way!  No cops in sight for miles...  I tell ya, though, one nice thing about entering Michigan through Ohio is the smell.  It instantly goes from a full port-o-pot to fresh and clean.

They have to fend for themselves, which they mostly do. But I did lose two of them in a heavy freeze while I was in Michigan for Christmas.

Yeah, I'm really looking forward to it. Never been to Hawaii, but this is the 2nd time my brother's been stationed there so it's about time I make the trip.

Cheers!

Packing for a 16+ hour drive tomorrow morning.  Lakewood Colorado to South Haven.  Looking forward to 2 weeks of beautiful sunsets, golf, maybe some fishing and quite a few local beers with family and friends.

1. We're closing on a house in ~ 2 weeks, so starting packing/throwing away over this weekend.
Small interruptions for son's baseball and flag football practices + memorial day weekend cook outs.

2. double IPA from the brewing company out of our softest rivals home town.

Tomorrow (Saturday), we're going to several open houses in search of a place for older son to live; a place with no GD flat roof. Then, since the kid is temporarily living with us again, he and I are probably going to do something together we've not done for a long time: clean his car, inside and out. Then we'll go for a blast in the C7Z on a back road up north. Bride will surely mess around in her gardens, which is her form of a "nothing box".

Tonight was dinner for three at a local Japanese hibachi place followed by ridiculously good ice cream. Food comas, all around, to commence in about 5 minutes.

In spite of many crappy things, life is still damn good!

It'll be a lazy weekend, and looks to be beautiful here. I'll be sitting by the pool, reading some good books (at least I hope they'll be good), getting some laps in, hoping the grandkids come here (otherwise, I'll go there). I know I'll smoke something (some things?), but not sure what. Haven't had ribs for a while, so maybe that'll be it. And don't even ask about "St. Louis Ribs," which don't exist here. I don't know where the name came from. If I get ribs, they'll be baby backs.
