It's Official: Big Ten Has Approved Nebraska's Application

Submitted by Geaux_Blue on

Took me two months to find out I got into UM, took Nebraska 3-4 hours to find out they were in the Big Ten

ESPN_BigTen Blog:

Big Ten unanimously approves Nebraska to the Big Ten.

And for those wondering the timetable

Nebraska officially enters the Big Ten on July 1, 2011, and will begin playing sports during the 2011-12 season

Finally, Rich Eisen asks what we all would love to require

Can Nebraska's price of admission into Big 10 please include giving Michigan back half of its national championship from 1997?

While everyone knew it was coming, it is now official. I'm sure Brian will do a writeup on the front page full of Red White and Blue streamers (that's the American dream, to go from a poor conference and join one of wealth and prosperity!) but this can be a thread to relegate commentary.

Have a great Friday and Go Nats (USA)!

I am totally liking that Delany guy more and more. He's going slow but he knows what he wants and he's not making any stupid moves. NE is a great pick up and at this point we are still only at 12. No matter what anyone else does at this point, there is zero downside for B10. We made a solid step forward and have most of our powder still dry. Much better than ending up with Okla St. and TTU. Or even RU, Syracuse and MO. Give Delany a gold star for round 1.

Honestly, I would rather have an annual rivalry with them called the 1997 National Championship so that in NCAA Football, I can win two National Championships every year.

So how soon until we can get some revenge for 1997 and the Alamo Bowl?

I'd imagine the Big Ten will be anxious to get Nebraska up against its marquee brands - Michigan, OSU, Penn State - as quickly as possible, so I'm betting Nebraska faces them in its first Big1T2en season.

dealt with the Nebraska Regents meeting. it jumped the gun on the B10 offer. further, there'd be about 90 threads on this topic. it's why i even left the Red post up for a while - to avoid reposting. i get the point of your snarkiness but an all-encompassing post, whether by me or someone else, was appropriate here.

Not being at all snarky. It's just my opinion that there is seriously no need for this thread. Not enough new content to justify creating a new thread when there already is another thread with almost the exact same name, dealing with pretty much the same info. This thread felt more like a minor update to the first thread a  version 1.2 instead of some entirely new info that would warrant creating a new thread, especially when this info could have just as easily been added to that thread. You disagree, cool beans.

so Michigan already has a big ten schedule out for the 2011-12 season, with Nebraska starting that season and possibly other schools when will they come out with a revised schedule?

assure divisions, and since the division haven't been decided/divided, there is little doubt the 2011 schedule will change.  It simply has to.  It will take at least the summer to work all of that out.

Divisions with round robins are required for a championship game, so they are pretty much guaranteed to happen. I can't wait to go rotate all of the divisions in NCAA 11 tonight so I can play a Big10 (12) championship game.

So, how does everyone see the conference scheduling ending up? 3 on, 3 off? 2 annual, 2 on, 2 off? Rotate every year or every two for home and home?

I'd kind of like to see 2 annual rivalries then rotating 2 on and 2 off every 2 years. Then we could do East/West and still play Nebraska and Minnesota every year. 9 conference games also makes for a stronger conference.

Current 2011 schedule was looking pretty good but now subject to change:

Sept 3, Western Michigan

Sept 10, Notre Dame

Sept 24, San Diego State

Oct 8, @Wisconsin

Oct 15, Indiana

Oct 22, @Michigan State

Oct 29, @Iowa

Nov 5, Minnesota

Nov 12, Illinois

Nov 19, @Northwestern

Nov 26, Ohio State

Theoretically it could still get easier. If we went East/West, we could get Minnesota, Illinois, Northwestern from the West conference, drop Wisconsin and Iowa, and pick Purdue and PSU.

join the Big Ten but it has happened! We look forward to playing you guys soon! College football has really gone through some major changes this week and I'm having trouble keeping track of all of it! Still hard to believe the Big 12 is almost gone.

Could you do something really cool and post a quick writeup for us on your favorite traditions, brief history of the program, stuff like that? You'll be able to post to the board once you get 20 points and if you say you'll do this, you'll be there in about 5 minutes.

If you have a board that you go to, I'd be willing to do the same later tonight.

and seeing as Michigan fans are easier to deal with than OSU (because I can't stand the Buckeyes) Well here's a couple of bullet points for those who aren't in the know of our history.

First season started in 1890 and our stadium is home sweet home in beautiful Memorial which seats a little over 81 k, we have 827 wins in our history and so far we have 24 bowl wins total an of course our share with Michigan in 97, 46 proud conference titles and 3 Heisman members, the newest our boy Suh, and one of our legacies are with yours with Yost. We all hate the Longhorns with a passion and I will say we flock to any game any where our boys come to play! Located in Beautiful Lincoln! And of course Little Red lol. Anything else?

there are a lot of teams that they want to play; im a UM fan first, Ohio State is up there because that is who Bo grew up following, then Iowa for the border reasons, UofM for thinking they have the NC (which they don't), and Penn State for that rediculous call in the1980's that kept them out of the NC.

Lincoln is a great venue for college football. My wife is from the Odell/Diller/Beatrice area. When we went back in '07 i went and took in Memorial, the whole campus is beautiful. The people there are friendly, and more then happy to show you around. You guys are a GREAT addition to the Big 10. Lets just say that it will be one wild day, everytime Michigan and Good Old Nebraska U play each year in my household....Go Blue

Thought this was interesting.  With Illinois and Nebraska, there will now be 2 football stadiums named “memorial.”

Little-known fact:  Following World War II, Michigan Stadium was renamed Memorial Stadium by the Board of Regents.  Of course, that's not what we call it, but technically, it's Memorial Stadium.

You also left out Indiana, which plays at Memorial Stadium.

Hmm...

If Pac-10 expects their new members to start playing in 2012, then does this suggest the Big Ten wants to stop here (don't need as much time to organize things)?  Or is Delany just a much better commish than Scott?

Meanwhile, Barry Alvarez giving an interview on BTN from a cruise right now.

im from Omaha and i don't know if you know this but we also have the longest record for sell out crowds its around 300 i think.

They also have the biggest score board in the NCAA and i think the stadium size is more around 85,000 people.

...is a smart man and sounds like a member of the MGoBlogerati:

Tim from Austin, Texas, writes: Adam, I'm a big UM and Big 10 as a whole fan. Everything that's going on with expansion has of course peaked interest, but something Kirk Herbstreit said... I disagree with. Kerby said that the Pac-10 is "stealing the thunder" from the Big 10. I know that Texas is the big fish here, but the Big Fish comes with so much baggage. Texas A&M and the Tech problem are 2 things that I don't think the Big 10 wanted to deal with, so they won't. Texas is a great addition, but with the package deal that includes the entire Big 10 South (minus Baylor), I don't think the Big 10 lost. It's like asking the hot girl to prom, but she makes you take all her fat friends too. What do you think? Is the Big 10 Losing?

Adam Rittenberg: Tim, I totally agree with you, but be prepared to hear people saying the Big Ten "lost" the expansion game if it only adds Nebraska and the Pac-10 expands by six. People will look at a much stronger Pac-10 on the field and disregard the extra baggage stuff. The bottom line is these two leagues -- Big Ten and Pac-10 -- are in different positions, although they have some similar philosophies. The Pac-10 really needs to expand to improve its brand and become more relevant nationally. I contend that while expansion helps the Big Ten, it's not absolutely necessary. The Big Ten would be compromising a lot to take on all of Texas' baggage. But again, be prepared for some Big Ten bashing.

The best thing that happend with the Big Ten adding one team is the championship game. Not playing into early December has hurt the Big Ten teams for years, and this will only help. And that team being Nebraska made it even better. The Big Ten couldn't go wrong with Nebraska and they could stop there and that would be fine. IMO Nebraska is a big get, and it shows with the way the rest of the Big 12 is reacting. They couldn't care less if Colorado left, they could've easily filled it with someone in a lesser conference looking to get into a BCS conference i.e. Boise St.. Good job Big Ten keep making your decisions wisely

I'll always see Suh as the real Heisman winner. I wish it was official but hey I can dream. I hope he does some good with your Lions up there.
