Appetizer: Nebraska's loss in Ireland

Main course: Good 'ol boy Brian Kelly's LSU Tigers

“Imagine being suspended for grades and school started a week ago? You lose the fucking syllabus?”

Then there is the issue of the LSU DE Ali Gaye with perhaps the most egregious targeting penalty I've ever seen. Blatantly launched the crown of his helmet directly into the QBs face--late hit, too. That guy should be out for more than just the first half of one game.

I have always thought there needs to be a tweak to the targeting rules to have different penalties associated with how egregious it is. The fact that a egregious targeting penalty like that one receives the same punishment as one where it's clear the defender isn't trying to be malicious is absurd. I know it would be introducing more judgement into the equation but most of the time it is pretty darn obvious when the defender isn't trying to be malicious.

I for one would be fine if we see LSU turn into a dumpster fire because

  1. we seem to be finishing second behind them for a number of recruits lately
  2. Brian Kelly sucks.

I wonder what the LSU AD was thinking or expecting - Orgeron won an NC - it might have been lightning in a bottle with Burrows - but, it was an NC nonetheless.

These expectations are like Nebraska’s.  Is the expectation realistic.

And, the only thing better than a Brian Kelly coached team losing is… A Brian Kelly coached Notre Dame team losing..

96 - prior to the LSU game on Sunday, I was talking to a friend who is a big fan / alum.  Their point was very similar to what you made.  Louisiana is a talent rich state / area.  And, their view is - Kelly isn’t recruiting Louisiana is as focused of a manner as he should.

I haven’t followed Kelly’s approach to recruiting at LSU - and, though technically, he may have signed his first class - he wasn’t there long enough to “form” that recruiting class.

Kelly pushed the recruiting envelope when he was at ND, and - I’m not suggesting that it was right - or wrong.  I did hear that when ND played Bama in the playoff several years ago - he looked at the size of Bama’s lines - with a comment of - “we need players like that - we need to get bigger in the trenches.”

So, what’s going to happen?  I don’t know.  Kelly’s smart and creative, IMO, on offense.  He won’t face the kind of academic “acceptance” challenges at LSU, as he did at ND.  So, the question will be - can he recruit and develop the horses necessary to compete in - and win - the SEC West.  Which needs to be paired with the NIL deals to compete with A&M, Bama, Texas, etc.  Time will tell.

It's tough. On the one hand, no, the expectations are probably not realistic. But on the other hand, LSU won national championships with three straight coaches (Saban, Miles, Orgeron). That's a level of sustained success that's almost unheard of in the modern era. Miami did it (actually had a five-coach span where four won it), and we did it in the 30s-40s (Kipke-Crisler-Oosterbaan). Additionally, Notre Dame came close with three championship winning coaches in a four-coach span from the 60s-80s, and OSU under Day has the potential to be close with Day following Meyer and Tressel (with the one Fickel interim year in between).

I'm not taking the time to pour over pre-WWII football to see if there are any others, but the point is that usually success stems from one (or maybe two in a row) good coaches; having three in a row really does speak to your program in and of itself. So at the end of the day it's hard to fault a team that's become so used to sustained success...

33 - it’s not fair for me to compare LSU and Nebraska - but, I couldn’t resist, I guess.

LSU - from Saban until today - can be competitive and win the SEC West - which is arguably the toughest division in college football.

Your perspective on “consecutive coaches” winning an NC, was astute - an insight I wasn’t aware of - and - reflective of just how important and visible college football is in that part of the country.

It will be interesting to see how successful he’ll be.  Though I don’t mind seeing Kelly lose - the team came back - and was in a position to send the game to OT.  A missed / blocked PAT - well, there’s no doubt that it’s going to be a major focus for their Special Teams - as well as fielding punts - for the next month.
