It's 'Get Away' Day for Thanksgiving - Where Are You Spending Thanksgiving?

Submitted by xtramelanin on

Mates,

It is 'Get Away' day, the most traveled day of the year.  Many of you will be on trains, planes, and automobiles going to various gatherings or hosting your own.  One of my brothers, also a Michigan grad, lives downstate and is about the greatest host on the planet - he always cooks a turkey and a giant tenderloin to perfection.  The other brother has his catered, because despite his many and great talents, he couldn't cook toast.  We'll be on the farm, and our meal will be one of the turkeys  we raised this summer.   He's looking very good right now, thawing out on the counter.

The question is:  Where are you going to spend Thanksgiving, and with whom will you be spending it?

I wish you all safe travels and a very enjoyable time with your loved ones.   Also, remember why we even have this most American of  holidays.  Our founding fathers were men of great courage and wisdom, carving this nation out of the wilderness.  Honor those that have gone before us.   It was only 28 years after George Washington proclaimed this holiday that our most favorite University came into being.

Go Blue, beat ohio.

with the Turkey I'm about to feast on. That said, mine is also thawed already and we'll spend a lot of time together tomorrow, enjoying the mesquite smoke wafting through and from the coals. A beer or two will be shared, as both I and my gobbler are better staying quenched while getting cooked. Son, daughters and granddaughter will be here at some point in the afternoon to join in and also watch the Turkeys on TV as they play the Vikings.

Diet plan though. I would feel bad about eating food that I had previously named. We're heading down to Birmingham to my Mom's. I asked her if she was all ready and needed anything. She said no, she just purchased the box of potatoes. Flake potatoes for us. Is this still bar night for the young crowd to see old HS friends???

and some of the more notable ones (read:  larger, more personality) have had names over the years:  bull-dozer, honey-bake 1 and 2, mishach, shadrach, abednigo and chuck, who was named after one son's favorite pilot, chuck yeager.   for no reason i will ever know, the only animals with privileged status, meaning no harvesting allowed, are the goats.

as I prefer to do at this time of the year.

No one else cooks, so I prepare the turkey and most sides every year.  This year I have will make the turkey on the Green Egg with apple wood.  Since we moved to Atlanta, I have only my family over, which is nice since my two oldest are out of the house and I'll be able to spend quality time with them.

We'll venture out of the house on Friday to see "Doctor. Strange".  Should be easy to do without hitting a ton of Black Friday traffic.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Me and the wife decided a few years ago that seeing our families twice in a month was too much travel and too much family in too short a span. So now we spend Thanksgiving every year in a city we've never been to. This year we are in SE Asia. Just flew from Hanoi to siem reap, Cambodia. We will be seeing angor wat tomorrow.

Angkor is one of my favorite places on earth. They have done a great job of keeping development at a distance from Angkor.

We leave tomorrow for Thailand. Three nights in Bangkok and then 2 weeks in Phuket. This is our annual SE Asia trip to take advantage of the 4 day weekend to start a vacation.

We'll (2 couples) be using Sling Box, iPhone and HDMI adapter to watch Meeeeeeechigan secure a spot in the Big Ten championship game at the hotel.

Enjoy your visit and Go Blue!

PS - Wonder how many M hats/shirts we'll see on our trip!?

Thanksgiving is at my house this year, so basically today is about frantically cleaning and wondering where to hide all the shit that you figure people would ask questions about - awkward questions, of course. It's also about leaving work a bit early so I can get some last minute supplies and begin to embark what is normally a long night of prep cooking for tomorrow. If I am around and modding in the wee hours tonight, that's why.

The one saving grace? Football will be on the TV on Thursday. Well, the big TV in the family room. The kids can argue over which cartoon to watch in the living room.

Flying to my parents house. It'll be the first time in a while I'll be able to see them with both of my brothers all around the same table. We are doing a Cajun spice rub and injection and then smoking the whole bird low and slow. Finish it up in the broiler to crisp the skin. I'm really looking forward to it.

I live in Switzerland.. so I have to work these next few days. I was lucky enough to get home (NW Ohio) last year to spend it with the family and then go to The Game...that won't happen this year as I am getting married in April 2017 and have no money! Safe travels to all and Go Blue!

We've forsworn Thanksgiving travel for the last few years--closest relatives are a 7 hour drive through heavily congested parts of the northeast. Our solution this year is to meet relatives in Cooperstown, which is roughly equidistant for the various families. We'll drink some Omegang and hit the Hall of Fame--not necessarily in that order!

Home in mid-Michigan. Two of three boys with us, one of whom arrived last night from Wisconsin. We're too lazy to prepare a meal so will pick up food from a caterer. Safe travels for all who will venture out. Go Blue!

We're going to be spending Thanksgiving at my mom's house in Ann Arbor, which also happens to be my old college house. While it's great to be back there's something a little odd about our kids sleeping in what was my friends room. After all, I know what went on in there...

I'll be sitting at home in VA with the wife and kid.  We had normally gone to her Uncle's house near Norfolk, but her and her dad don't get along so well, so no more family visits for her.  All my family is still in Michigan.  We have too many dogs to board for a fairly short weekend visit (6, stemming from my previous life training them and her love of all things with 4 legs).

Have a ham ready for the slow cooker tomorrow morning...
