"Tradition is something you can't bottle. You can't buy it at the corner store. But it is there to sustain you when you need it most. I've called upon it time and time again. And so have countless other Michigan athletes and coaches. There is nothing like it. I hope it never dies."

But I'm glad you were born with all the knowledge of humanity, and didn't have to learn from any dead guys.  Because otherwise you'd have to care about what people who know far more than you do think about things. (Like having an understanding of what Michigan Football is actually all about.  Sorry you didn't learn that in your time here).

Sharp: Brady, you said your goal was to win Big 10 titles. What about national titles? Shouldn't that be the focus...

Hoke: No.

Sharp: of your program? For a national program like Michigan?

Hoke: No. We want to win Big 10 titles. You can't win a national title if you don't win your conference title.

Sharp: But isn't winning a conference title sort of a consolation prize?

Hoke: I have five Big 10 Championship rings and 1 National Championship rings. And they ALL matter. They all matter. You can't win a National Championship without winning a conference championship.

Sharp: So the goal is winning a national championship?

Hoke: I didn't say that. I want to win Big 10 titles. Multiply. Consecutively. I just made that word up (multiply). I'm like that. I'm good at Scrabble.

(next question, cue Sharp column about Michigan being a 'regional' program).

I didn't watch the presser but after reading this I'm less "onboard". It was the "our goal is to go to the Rose Bowl every year" attitude that turns me off. Its ok to aspire for greater things than winning the conference that's a distant second in football prowess. There's nothing wrong with saying "hell yeah I want to win a National Championship". This small snippet of the presser does let me know he is the perfect fit for Michigan though.

It's better to aspire to what you can control than something you can't. Pete Carroll's USC teams consistently were worthy to play for the national title but were left out a few times. His stated goal every year was to win the Pac-10 and win the Rose Bowl. No matter how good a team is they can be left out of the title game (USC 2004, Auburn 2005, Texas 2008). You don't want your team to consider winning the conference and winning whatever BCS bowl you play in to be failure because they got left out of the title game. I'm totally with Hoke on this one.

I liked his answer to one particular question better than Rich Rod's (which I call recall vividly)
<br>
<br>"Coach, do you think this is elite among college football jobs?"
<br>
<br>RR's answer: "Uh, yeah, I think there's something special about this place."
<br>
<br>BH's answer: "Are you kidding?!?! This is MICHIGAN!!!"

It's kind of hilarious how quickly opinion is whipsawing back and forth - and I'm not calling anyone out, I'm just as susceptible myself. I love that Brady is disdainful of the press hyenas, and I love his presentation in general. But as I commented on a previous thread, I thought Rod Marinelli was one impressive dude when he came in, and he turned out to be as unqualified as HC as Millen was at GM.
<br>Hoke has to go up against the likes of Tressel, Pelini, Kelly, Paterno, Ferentz, Beilema, and Dantonio - and beat them. Beat them on their home recruiting grounds, beat them in assistant coach hires, beat them in game planning, beat them in halftime adjustments, beat them on the scoreboard. He's never had to accomplish any of those things at anywhere near the level he has to now, and we won't know for quite a while if he can pull it off.
<br>But, based on today's performance, he'll be fun to watch and root for while we wait and see.

Wasn't sure at first but I have to say, I'm proud to be a Michigan fan today.

Hoke's sprit embodies everything about the program I want it to be.

Here's to much success and longevity Brady!

It was a good press conference.  I liked his line about recruiting: "It's easy to sell a place you love."  I don't know how well he can salvage the 2011 class, but going forward, I think he'll do well in that area.

I’ve been following mgoblog for a long time, and decided to finally contribute following the introduction of the new coaching regime. Seeing how yesterday’s events resulted in a collective ‘WTF??’ among much of the Michigan faithful, I felt that it is only appropriate to use my inaugural post as a way to get past it and move forward…

Positive #1: Restoring Michigan’s Public Image
The act of bringing in Hoke at this point appeases journalists of the misunderstood and over-hyped ‘Michigan Man’ criteria – so at least they can’t pull that card. Also, with his generally positive resume and little baggage we can seemingly move on from the negative commentary that dominated the past three seasons (warranted or not).

Positive #2: Recruiting (long-term)
It might take a while to get over the transitional hump as we turn from the recruitment of speedy, spread-happy athletes to those with more of a Man-ball mentality, but I have faith that with a little patience Hoke will try to adapt to what he has for the time being and find that it is not entirely a bad thing for him, or for Michigan football. He also should be an instant upgrade when it comes to drawing big time defensive prospects. Additionally, with the MSM appeased, we can rebuild our brand in our own backyard and in time return to the level of a nation-wide recruiting powerhouse that is a direct pipeline to the NFL.

Positive #3: Direction of the program
A wise man once said, “those who stay will be champions.” I have faith that those who buy into our new regime will be rewarded for their hard work and dedication. I cannot speculate as to what is best for the individual athletes, but one can only hope that jumping from the De-boring offense to the spread, and back to Man-Ball will not be as devastating a transition as we were forced to suffer through in 2008. I expect that Hoke (and Borges now) will be more than willing to take the ‘smoke ‘em if ya got ‘em’ approach and adopt a bit more of a hybrid look over the next few seasons, as opposed to trying to put a square peg into a round hole. It will take a bit of luck, and again – a bit of patience, but success is not out of the question for this team over the next few seasons. Hell, a win over MSU and/or OSU in ’11 would make Hoke an instant hero in AA!

Positive #4: Chance to make a splash with big-name (defensive) staff members

If done right, Hoke has the opportunity to build a staff that can squeeze the most out of the current roster, while also allowing our football program to reach its full potential in the years to come. DB said he was willing to pay top dollar for an elite coaching staff and it’s time to put up or shut up. Brady was by no means the sexiest candidate, but in many ways his assistants will be the ones who will make or break his career at UofM.

Positive #5: Hoke is a man with something to prove
Regardless of all of the negativity surrounding him, I was a RR supporter because he was the Michigan coach. He stuck to his guns no matter what the media, grumpy fans, or former players were saying and turned our offense into a young force in the B1G…??!! (don’t get me started…) Nevertheless, I always felt that our teams under RR were lacking that Michigan swagger, or a cutthroat mentality – with the expectation of victory on every gameday. The dawn of a new era in Michigan football history gives Hoke the opportunity to rekindle those old expectations among his players, and to take advantage of the unprecedented low expectations of our football program to date. It has all the makings of a great comeback story for the Wolverines – and who doesn’t like those?

Now, more than ever, we need to stand behind our coach, our players, and the administration behind them. Come on, Brady, build us a team worthy of Michigan! GO BLUE!!

However, I am not sold on his OC Borges. Also the question remains, can he recruit?  Not just locally or regionally, but nationally. If Michigan competes and wins B10 titles, will they be able to compete against the likes of Alabama on a national stage?  I guess we will know in time.

I think that what Hoke was done with the talent he has is pretty darn good. I'm nervous about the competition it was against, but he has some close finishes against ranked teams. Teams that could and have beaten good B1G TEN teams. I really think he will do well.

Does he make his brother the DC?  No experience, little scary there.  What about Chuck Heater?  I think everyone will go bat shit if heater comes in as DC.  What about some up and coming talent?  Interesting to say the least.  How much is in contract?  FWIW JH is not here, not LM, Gary Patterson, Brady Hoke.  This man wanted the job, he loves Michigan.  Its great to hear it from him!  Happy to have you hear coach! Kinda reminds me of LC, with the way he speaks slowly and methodically.  Gotta love how he took no crap from Sharp too!

I wasn't crazy about the length of time this took, that's on Brandon, but I like Hoke.

This isn't a beauty contest.

Giving the fans a boner isn't a job requirement for Michigan's coach, and never has been.

He needs to win. That's all. I think this guy has the potential to do that.

I wasn't happy at first, but after the presser I'm on the Hoke train. He loves this university and first and foremost. I'm glad we had him eventhough the first year recruiting and season could be rough. He changed my mind and can't wait for my season tickets to watch what he is creating.
