I'm on the market for some Michigan memorabilia. Any advice?

Submitted by go16blue on

I was thinking about fan day, when I realized that I don't really have anything for the players/coaches to sign besides old posters. So that got me thinking about buying a helmet. Unfortunately, those are a bit too pricey for me, a high schooler with very little income. So, mgoblog, what do you think I should get/buy (and while we're at it, what's your favorite piece of memorabilia)? Is it safe to assume posters will be sold at fan day? Also, I found a mini-helmet (1/2 scale) that I can afford. Do you think its big enough for a few signatures? Thanks for the advice.

Go to our online auction website http://www.biddingforgood.com/auction/AuctionHome.action?vhost=umich

This is an auction of mostly UofM sports memorabilia that I and a group of alums have been collecting IN PERSON for the last five years and are auctioning off to benefit a group of scholarships for undergrads at UofM.

Everything you pay over and above the cost of the unsigned item (so a football is $25) is a tax write off and donation to the University.

We have almost 90 items up now and from now until then end of November should go through somewhere between 250 to 300 items. Every big name former Michigan player will be in there. Unfortunately its a violation of NCAA rules for us to put anything up from a current player.

I just snagged a nice 44x20" framed piece with 8x10's of Brady, Desmond, Braylon and Woodson from eBay (collectingconcepts was the seller). He's out of Troy and gave me a discount for picking it up. Total price was $115, and he had lots of other cool pics, like The Cold War panorama, and Bo running out of the tunnel for the last time, as well as Detroit sports. I love that kinda stuff for the man cave and would recommend checking it out.

What about grabbing a football and having them sign in silver marker? It would be low cost and should hold more signatures than a mini helmet. Then again, you could always ask our friends in Columbus for advice regarding the memorabilia market.

Mini helmets are cool when autographed but you won't be able to pack very many on to it. I think they look better with just one or maybe two just because it is a cleaner look.

the white footballs. I have 8 of them in my man cave and they're all in the clear cases. They look the best with a blue sharpie. I hava a bronze placard with the year under each one of them.

Helmets are cool but too many autographs on them look sloppy, whereas on a football, it looks pretty cool. The white footballs are like $30.

For less expensive stuff to autograph:

Football-$30
Mini Helmet-$30
Season Tee-$15
Maple street press mag-$10
The wolverine preview book-$12.95

They always have some kind of free poster but I wouldn't use that for autographs.

They should have the new schedule posters there for free. But they go fast, faster than the magnets, pocket schedules, etc.

To see them...just that early if you want to see them and have any time left to see anybody else. But I've never waited in line, so maybe it is that bad. I can understand why, and Hoke being new might be a treat for all, but (just me), I'd rather acknowledge all the other guys who go under the radar and work just as hard, rather than be the 10,000th person to bug Denard. I mean, I totally get why, it's understandable, and I bet Denard handles it as well as any player we've ever had. I just always feel bad for the guys who aren't ever being mobbed, because they bleed for the maize and blue too. Signatures from 19 and 20 year olds aren't "my" thing...but I'd probably like to shake their hand and say "thanks".

Id recommend just getting a bunch of sweet 5x7s of players, the big house, etc. Then you can always frame them. Take a look inside coach and four barber shop on state street for an idea of how this could look sweet.

On that note, anyone know where to get one of those old school felt banners (not pennant) that would have the UM crest &"The University of Michigan" on it in maize & blue? I would love to get one of those instead of a block M banner.

Does anyone have any really cool Michigan memorabilia that you've collected over the years? Anyone have an "M" cave? Here is mine. I've been collecting signed photos, jerseys, helmets, figures, sports illustrated's, banners, etc for some time. Would love to see what everyone else has if you have video of it. Definitely is my favorite room of the house. Not so much for the wife...haha.

I am in the middle of getting the cave together, but I did take some pictures of some of my Michigan/Detroit memorabilia and put it on my photobucket. I still have to add more stuff to it.

As for ideas on Fan Day, you could always buy a 16x20 or 20x24 of the Big House and get players to sign it. There are some on photofile.com, or you might be able to find some on eBay. They sometimes have free posters at the Fan Day, but it seems like they have only had them once every other year, so you might not want to go to the event empty handed.

Thanks! Yeah I totally agree with you. I've been wanting to get the jerseys framed for some time now but its pretty costly. Just when I think I am going to buy a frame I end up buying other items for the collection. Unfortunately now I am out of space so I will probably not be buying anything for awhile. I need to move and get a bigger basement. The wife is happy I ran out of space so that I am not buying anything else.

I am willing to help a fellow Michigan fan out by offering to donate some space in my own home to display your over flow memorabilia. So go crazy and get whatever you need to keep you collection growing, space is no longer a limiting factor for you. My compliments, I really do like your M cave, I think the statues are really cool. This seems like the perfect time for you to get those jerseys framed if you are not gonna be adding any more memorabilia to your collection, I only say that because it looks like you have some sweet ass authentic jerseys that are worthy of being impressively displayed in a frame(btw, was the white #6 T Wheatley's jersey?).

Haha glad to know you have my back if I purchase more Michigan memorabilia. There's always more jerseys, photos and figures that I want to get. It's been a work in process for quite some time and I am glad I never tracked how much ive already spent because I am sure it's not pretty but it's definitely worth it. Yeah I might consider gettng some frames if I can some good prices. Yes that is a Tyrone Wheatley jersey. One of my favorites.
