Hutch Speaking at the grad library on Monday

Submitted by Feat of Clay on

Thought some of you locals might be interested in this event.

Softball Coach Carol Hutchins speaking about how Title IX changed sports.  It's at Hatcher on Monday, October 24th, at 10 a.m.

The time is a little inconvenient for those of us who aren't retired (or clever enough to avoid scheduling Monday classes), but nevertheless, here are more details:

It's pretty awesome for Lib staff who get told to go to this things to bolster the audience though.    Go, eat the free food, and get paid.

I'm a little bummed though, I was thinking Steve Hutchinson, but softball works too.

Title IX is still repercussing decades later...it was only this last month that our state (in Oregon) had a federal investigation dropped without comment from the US Department of Education.  This despite factual evidence in the complaint that lists over fifty high schools where opportunity for girls is greatly disparate - not only in funding but in opportunity.

Our local public HS was listed as providing fraudulent accounting in this complaint.

Illinois and Wisconsin still provide tuition support from the general fund for women's athletics to allow for Title IX .

Despite years of success in Women's basketball - women coaches are rarely hired to coach men's ball.

Talk to the father of a gifted female athlete...he'll tell you about Title IX.  Better yet talk to the father of a marginal athlete who wants to quit.  Ask him why.  It's hard to motivate a girl in a society that undervalues women's sports.

I love CFB and march madness... but this is not something that is going to be addressed in our generation and will call for greater guns than Title IX to rectify.

I would very much like to hear this talk.

Is it wrong to pity all the people who saw Hutch and thought of Steve Hutchinson and not the greatest coach in the history of Michigan athletics? /seriously
