How many ranked teams will Michigan end up playing the rest of the regular season?

Submitted by SpikeFan2016 on

After 5 weeks of the 2016 season, Michigan is tied for first nationally in terms of number of wins over currently ranked teams (#11 Wisconsin, #21 Colorado).

This got me thinking: how many more ranked matchups will we get to see in the 7 remaining games this regular season?

(Disclaimer: Yes, I know that who is ranked at the end of the season matters more than who was ranked while you played them, aka why everyone considers our Colorado win vastly superior to MSU's over then-ranked Notre Dame, but Top 25 matchups always do bring extra excitement and attention).

I see things as follows:

110% Will Not Be Ranked (2):

  • Rutgers: Duh
  • Illinois: Duh. Illinois is 1-3. They do play Purdue and Rutgers the next two weeks before coming to The Big House, but a 3-3 Illini team with 2 blowout losses will never, ever be ranked.

Extremely Unlikely to be Ranked (2):

  • Indiana: While the Hoosiers are 3-1, riding high off one of Kevin Wilson's biggest wins during his tenure and receiving a few votes in the "Others" category, it's very hard to see them coming into Ann Arbor on November 19th as a ranked team. There are two main reasons for this: first, we play them so late in the season that they will already have played every single losable game on their schedule (only game after us is a home matchup against the mighty Purdue Boilermakers). The second reason is their schedule itself. Choking against Wake Forest and having a very weak strength of schedule in the non-conference is going to all but elminate them from rankings unless they beat ALL of the middling teams on their schedule (@Northwestern, Maryland, @Rutgers, Penn State) AND knock off another ranked opponent (@Ohio State or Nebraska). Hoosiers look poised to play in a bowl game again, but going 8-2 in their first 10 games (likely what they would need to come to The Big House ranked) seems highly, highly unlikely.

  • Iowa: Due to the curse of Kirk Ferentz's contract extension, the once Top 15 Hawkeyes are not even receiving a single vote in the poll after posting a 3-2 record the first five games. This includes losses to two unranked opponents and a troubling single digit win over putrid Rutgers in a game that was tied until late in the 4th. A 7-2 Iowa team would probably be able to just make it into the bottom of the rankings in time for our November 12th showdown in Iowa City. However, that would require Iowa to win its next four games in a row. At this point, I only think it's significantly likely that Iowa wins one of those (@Purdue). Next week they hit the road to take on the Golden Gophers in Minneapolis (toss up game). But then they have to host the Badgers (likely loss) and play a night game in Happy Valley (PSU is obviously not very good, but night games in Beaver Stadium are always difficult ventures, especially for highly flawed teams like the Hawkeyes).

Could go either way (2):

  • Michigan State: The Spartans are 2-2 with wins over two equally horrible teams with FCS level defenses (Furman and Notre Dame), a blowout home loss to a Top 15 team and an overtime loss to an unranked, likely middling-at-best team. MSU has three more games before they face us, all against currently unranked teams with 2 out of 3 in East Lansing: BYU, Northwestern and @Maryland. Obviously, the Spartans would need to go 3-0 in these games to resurface in the rankings by October 29th, and even that may not be enough. However, I do think MSU has a decent chance of going 3-0. Northwestern is bad this year and has one of the few offenses that has looked even worse than MSU's. BYU could pose a challenge, but they have a lot of their own problems and MSU will have home field advantage. Maryland is harder to predict and the most likely loss on this slate in my opinion. In October, lower end Top 25 teams will start losing more frequently as conference play kicks in causing more churn in the rankings. MSU needs Wisconsin to beat Iowa and look at least semi competitive against OSU. Also, if they beat a ranked Maryland team (you heard that right, more below), that would likely give them a #21-#25 type ranking before the Battle for Paul Bunyan.

  • Maryland: The Terps honestly may be the most likely to be Michigan's next ranked opponent. Heck, November 5th in The Big House could even be an undefeated Top 20 matchup (I promise I'm not crazy, hear me out). Maryland is 4-0. They have played absolutely nobody. However, 3 of their 4 wins were utter blowouts and the fourth was a road win over a UCF team that will likely be a bowl team this year (they are halfway there, with 3 wins). However, the biggest reason is the timing and substance of Maryland's schedule. The terps have an extremely backloaded schedule; their three hardest games are in November (@Michigan, vs. Ohio State, @Nebraska, and we are the first of those three teams they play). Their four games before they play us are: @Penn State, Minnesota, Michigan State and @Indiana. Not exactly murder's row, especially getting the Spartans at home for a night game in a week they easily could be looking ahead to Michigan. Maryland won their most recent trip to Happy Valley and PSU looks very bad this year (Maryland loves to run the ball and PSU has no starting linebackers left). Indiana is a team that Maryland can beat, and both Minnesota and MSU look vulnerable. Frankly, I don't think that Maryland will come into Ann Arbor at 8-0 or 7-1. I'd imagine they will be 6-2 and unranked. However, they realistically could be 6-0 and ranked when MSU plays them on October 22nd (which could propel the Spartans into the rankings if they beat BYU and Northwestern beforehand).

110% Will Be Ranked (1):

  • Ohio State: Duh

What do you guys think? Will we have to wait until Columbus to face another ranked team? That would be unfortunate, but honestly may be likely at this point.

in the B1G Championship game. Does that count as regular season? MSU falls into the unlikely to be ranked category as they are heading for a 7-5 kind of year. I feel really bad for them.

This may not be the last we've seen of Wisconsin. I'm having a hard time taking Nebraska seriously, 5-0 record notwithstanding. And they have to play Wisconsin on the road. So if we don't lay any eggs the rest of the way and manage to get by Ohio State, we would likely face Wisconsin again in Indianapolis.

None of this matters one bit. At this point we have one game that matters left-OSU. Even if we lose a game before that one if we win we're fine. And even if we're undefeated when we play them if we lose we are fucked.

One game matters

Well, if you want to be cranky about it, absolutely none of this matters in any way, shape, or form from an existential perspective. We are all just here to make our miserable lives slightly brighter by placing our hopes and dreams in the hands of teenagers who are good at kicking an oblong ball through a big H!

Not cranky-just responding to the OPs speculation on how many teams we'll play the remainder of the year will be ranked. My assumption was that he was speculating on this as it might determine our ability to make the "final four" - my contention is it doesn't matter.

1) If you think it doesn't matter at all, you're ignorant. If Washington, Alabama and Clemson win their conferences undefeated (looks possible, they each already have one of, if not their most, difficult conference game in the rear view mirror: Stanford, Ole Miss and Louisville), it will be a fight for the #4 spot. If Houston beats a 1 loss, top 10 Louisville and Oklahoma goes on to win the Big 12, a one loss Big Ten champ could definitely be in danger.

2) That's not even close to the only reason I posted it. Part of it is for the fun and intrigue of the season. It's more fun to go to or watch games that have more significance leading up to them. I'd hope that we get to see another ranked team in the next 6 games, otherwise it'll be a whole lot of boring. Part of it is just for conversation; we are allowed to discuss Michigan football on this board, after all.

You might not be ignorant, but you are arrogant.  Unfortunately, your imperial declarations don't change anything.

Suppose Michigan loses two conference games (neither of them OSU or MSU), still makes and wins the BTCG? I wouldn't see them going instead of an undefeated Houston, or one-loss champs from the SEC, Big 12, ACC, or PAC 12. Your "isn't one possible scenario" claim is arrogant and bogus.

The rankings will only matter if we somehow drop a game before The Game. Since we haven't yet, I don't care where we're ranked. And given our schedule and the quality of our coaching, I don't see us dropping a game before the big one. The only one that still gives me a little heartburn is MSU, but that's only because it's a rivalry game and because Dantonio has had our number. MSU's performance the past two weeks has drastically reduced my level of concern about that game. Assuming that we don't get bit by the injury bug, I really don't see another losable game on the schedule before OSU. And if we slay the OSU dragon, the B1G Championship Game will basically be a guaranteed play-in game (for us, anyway) for the CFP.

There is no way an undefeated B1G champion gets left out of the Playoff no matter what happens in the other conferences, especially if it's Michigan or Ohio State. This isn't 2008 when the B1G was a laughingstock. If all five conference champs go undefeated, Baylor would be left out because the rest of the Big XII is awful (and no one wants to see Baylor in the CFP). If Houston gets in, they would probably bump out Washington because the Pac-12 is having a down year since Stanford is shaky and Oregon and USC are both awful. The three conferences on solid footing are the SEC, ACC, and B1G.

I don't know why you're getting downvoted. I frankly don't care where we're ranked because we're still undefeated. If we stay undefeated through the next seven weeks, then everything comes down to The Game. That one (and the B1G Championship Game) is for all the marbles. I don't see us or Ohio State losing before The Game, so it's going to be a 2006-like situation.

Maryland could very well be ranked, yes. Even if they lose to MSU, I could still see them sticking around the back end of the top 25. did they recieve any votes in the latest AP poll?

I'm actually surprised Maryland isn't ranked already.  They have looked like an actual competent team and are 4-0.  Can very easily be undefeated when they play Michigan, not sure if at PSU or MSU at home is their toughest game before Michigan.

Only OSU. Everyone else is garbaaaage.

State is garbage who just lost to garbage.

Iowa is garbage who just lost to garbage.

Indiana is garbage who just beat garbage.

Rutgers was born in the garbage.

Illinois invented garbage.

Maryland thinks they're no longer garbage, when in reality, they're still garbage.

I'll say OSU and MSU.

They only way Maryland is ranked in our matchup is if they're 7-1 or 8-0. A 6-2 Maryland team whose best win is over down MSU/PSU squads won't get them ranked. As of now, I don't think Maryland is good enough to go 3-1 in those games. All of those seem like pretty even matchups, but that's because we don't a lot about Maryland. They needed 2OT to beat UCF, and if they lose that game none of us think anything about them. I'd like to see them go 3-1 for rankings sake, but I don't see it.

Iowa  won't be there. Iowa has come back down to earth after last year and is a mediocre 7-5 team that will not be ranked.

If we played Indiana earlier in the year I'd say maybe, but we play them too deep into the schedule. If they beat one of Nebraska/OSU (so Nebraska) and win the rest of their games leading up to us I'd say they'd be ranked. But I don't think they'll beat Nebraska, or manage to go through a 4 game stretch of similar quality teams before us unscathed.

I'm gonna give MSU the benefit of the doubt and say they're ranked when we play them. I know it's not fun because it's not LOL Sparty, but I will give them #respekt until we beat them. Also, they play a really easy schedule before we play them. They have two more B1G games, NW and @Maryland before us. They should beat both of those teams despite their current struggles, especially since they have some time to heal up some injuries. This BYU game is the one I think they're most likely to lose. They got banged up a lot at the end of the Indiana game. Their center, another LB or two, a DL, and a corner all got banged up at various points, plus McDowell will miss the first half due to the targeting. BYU is 2-3 but played a tough schedule and played a bunch of close games. They're a solid team, about MSU's level. If all the missing MSU plays are out this weekend, I think BYU will win. But until that's confirmed, I'll give MSU the benefit of the doubt. And then if they do win all 3 games, a 5-2 MSU team is ranked, even though they probably shouldn't be.

My thoughts exactly.

  • OSU is a given. No one is going to test them before they play us. Not Wisconsin at Wisconsin and certainly not MSU at MSU.
  • MSU is still going to get the benefit of the doubt from voters, though, if they go on a little run before we meet. Call it 'the Dantonio Effect.' Logic would tell us that we should handle MSU okay, but I still see a struggle. We're their OSU, after all.

I just realized:

Iowa could realistically lose out at home. They have lost their last two home games (North Dakota State and Northwestern). They only have three left and they are all against Top 15 teams: Wisconsin, Michigan and Nebraska.

LOL @ IOWA'S AD.

Maryland will end this season with a minimum 4 losses. I don't see them being ranked at any point this year.
