Hossa 12 years, $5 million per year

Submitted by Spartyon19962001 on
TSN reporting the Hossa Chicago deal is 12 years/$5 million per year. http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=283428 This contract is ridiculous, I am glad the Wings didn't make this deal.

this was a good comparison, but IMO he is a chock artist in the playoffs. Correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think he had a point in the Stanley Cup finals. I would have been happy if he signed for the $4 million, but he is not worth more than that.

Lets see, two assists in game two including assisting on the game winner, an assist in game five (edit, I can't type) for three points total. But just as important to me in only two minutes in the box in the 3rd period of game five after it became a blowout. And judging the talent of a player based on one single series is an exercise in small sample statistics. He had 40 goals and 71 points last year. Why would you ever be happy to see him leave the team?

That doesn't compute. Again, Hossa was our second-best forward after Zetterberg in the Finals. You guys can put on your tinfoil hats and write him off because he didn't rack up the goals, but he was fantastic defensively and he made things happen on offense. So he didn't put the puck in the net - the great thing about hockey is that you can make up for that in other facets. He did that. That's all there is to it. He's not a bonafide superstar, and he's even said he doesn't like the limelight. But he is a bonafide first-line player whom the Wings simply can't afford right now. Oh well.

Very nice backpedaling from "Let him go underachieve for someone else" to "I just wish he would have taken a long term deal".

I have to agree with sparty here. Hate to see him go, he was a great player. I'm not going to resign that guy for more than 4. For what he did, he's not worth more than that. That's easy to say he was amazing, while forgetting everything he didn't do. For 8 million a year it's not worth it. How many points did abdelkader get? If you want to play the points game I'll pull out a bunch of other guys. Abdelkader did it in two games. No one is going to convince Hossa and Abdelkader. I can't ignore Hossa's impact that wasn't shown on the point total, but for that much money and how skillful Hossa is supposed to be, he should have been more. Hossa had a fine point total, and a fine contribution. For a regular player. Hossa is not a regular player.

Helm and Franzen, off the top of my head, were FAR more effective than Hossa. Datsyuk (when he was playing) outplayed Hossa with a frozen foot. I even thought Filpulla made more happen out there than him. With what he earned last season, I thought Hossa was a boderline bust given his performance in the playoffs.

This fucking sucks. I was hoping he would accept the deal. Do we still have a shot with him, or someone who is comparable? I hope we go after a few other free agents if we cannot get Hossa.

Marian Gaborik is one of my favorite players and I hope with Hossa looking to be gone we can get him. I think the Wild we're trying to shop him and I believe he is a Free Agent. Or Mike Cammalleri the UM stud I know he's a free agent.

No not really I meant they were shopping him during the season meaning they are not desperate to keep him. Now that he is a free agent just sign him to a say 7 year 5-6 mill a year deal.

I think John Madden might be available... I love walking into Cottage Inn and seeing the picture of him from winning the National Championship back in 96. Being a Michigan fan from NJ hes my alltime favorite

o well. i was hoping they would keep him, but we can make do without him. watch us win the cup again next year without him. maybe it will prove that he is kind of a jinx?!

not to pile on, but he really did disappear during the playoffs and especially the finals. maybe he was injured or something, but if a guy like leino or helm or abby can take his place for much lower cost, the wings should really do that.

Holland did the right thing. He offered Hossa an equitable amount based upon his playoff production. Hossa has been a playoff underacheiver for most of his career except 2008. A team like Detroit needs playoff performers, not more regular season performers. The team also needs depth. Even without Hossa, the team probably won't have a quality reserve player if someone in the top 4 lines gets hurt. If the price is right, I'd like to see the Wings go after a good defensive forward like Madden or Paulson. The penalty killing needs to be fixed badly.

If it's a long term deal, it'll never happen. Chicago doesn't have long term cap space since all of their young stars are due for huge raises when their contracts are up. They could sign him probably for a short term deal though.

Did they just sign Hossa to a 12 yr deal? LOL woooow. Hossa might help get you to the playoffs but he's not going to help you much during it. Ken Holland wasnt about to break the bank for Hossa. Considering he's already got Datsyuk and Zetterberg locked up for plenty he should be fine. Detroit's main strength is coaching and drafing. Their scouts are top notch. This is almost as crazy as the deal the Bulls gave Ben Wallace.

to the Wallace deal. I hope it ends the same, with Hossa being traded to Cleveland. I know there is no NHL team in Cleveland, but there is an AHL team, I think.

Being from Chicago (NOT a Hawks fan), I figured they would have tried to lock up the young guys (they're obviously good). This move is kind of bizarre but then Tallon never impressed me as being particularly smart.
