Hoops Recruiting: Who the hell...?
I'll admit it: I'm in my feelings about basketball. I think Juwan is a good but not perfect coach who is taking blame for things he has no control over. So to cope, I have scoured the recruiting services for a very specific thing: a big, damn goon. If Matt Painter can take the lumpen mass that was Zach Edey and churn out the player of the year 3 years later, why not us? So I took to searching for some big ass goons, unranked behemoths that Juwan might give the Big Country treatment. I was hoping to start at 7-5 and go from there. Surely, there has to be some sort of 7-8 375 lb man-boy in Nebraska who tosses bales of hay like they were cornhole bags.
And then I stumbled on a guy in 2023 I'd never heard of, despite being interested in this kind of stuff.
The kid is named Aday Mara. He's either 7-2 or 7-3 and 245. He is from Spain, currently uncommitted, and only ranked by On3... but ranked as a 97 4-star prospect?
Currently he is predicted to go to UCLA as it is his only offer. Turns out he was only just recently bought out of his professional contract creating a very new opportunity.
So, has anyone heard of this dude? Is there some reason Saddi Washington hasn't already perfected his Aragonian Spanish accent? Why haven't we heard about the staff being all over this guy?
Any intel from the community appreciated. Otherwise take this as a plea: JUWAN PLEASE MAKE THIS SPANISH BOY YOUR NEW LARGE SON.

Every day there is something on this board that makes me literally laugh out loud. Thank you!
But can he fight bulls?
Sometimes the bull wins (with a little help from the CIA)...
EDIT: Oddly enough, I made cochinita pibil yesterday. Please don't shoot the cook!
I love that dish but can't ever remember the name for the life of me. Instead I butcher it badly, and it drives my wife crazy lol
I love making it because a lot of people have never had it. It is always a big hit. Peeling away the banana leaves to reveal the bright color and of course the aroma never disappoints. The only thing better is the actual taste.
At the end of the Once Upon a Time in Mexico DVD, Robert Rodriguez has a segment in his home on making it. My methods have evolved, but that was what got me started on it.
I pretty much eat nothing but pibil and ceviche when I'm in the Yucatan.
Still haven't found a recipe I'm happy with cooking it at home.
1. Cool Story Bro--I directed Danny Trejo in some video segments for a Spy Kids CD-ROM back in the day. Super nice guy.
2. The advanced humor in Bug Bunny cartoons is called layering. You want to layer in some jokes for the parents so that they don't get completely bored watching with their kids. My favorite one is a Hare in King Arthur's Court. Bugs comes up to a knight and asks him his name. He replies, "Sir Ossis. Sir Ossis of the liver...."
Yes! And Bugs asks if the knight knows any of his friends: Duke of Ellington, Count of Basie, Earl of Hines, Cab of Calloway, Satchmo of Armstrong.
Which made me yell, "Mom, what does this mean?", which then led to my intro to these greats of jazz.
Writing like this was, in the words of Wile E. Coyote, super-genius.
Signed on just to upvote Bugs Bunny. I remember that specific scene. Twice actually. First as a kid and second as a dad.
One of my favorite lines from this cartoon:
"Oh well, I'll just ask this gent in the fancy knickerbockers ... Pardon me, sir, but could you direct me to Coachella Valley and the Big Carrot Festival therein?"
This is one of the many reasons that Looney Tunes were genius. When you're 8 years old, there's a lot to unpack here: What are knickerbockers? Where is Coachella Valley? What does "therein" mean?
Raising questions like that makes you look for answers. So unwittingly, we were learning all kinds of things between Sylvester chasing Tweety and Daffy getting his bill blown off.
Those cartoons from back then had a lot of geographic place names from California and nearby since they were made in the LA area. They'd often use the odder sounding ones to add more humor - Rancho Cucamonga e.g.

hillbilly braveheart:
one day the two bulls get out. our two oldest sons are just coming back from barn chores and see this. at the time they are maybe 10 and 7, 11 and 8 at the oldest. the younger one grabs one of my hockey sticks and charges the bulls, stick down, like a joust. 50 yards down a slight hill. they see him coming, he's charging, the lead bull puts his head down for a second and it looks like things could go south real fast and real bad. but they don't. son keeps charging, lead bull tries to head out to the corn field and son cuts him off and whacks him with the hockey stick. bull wheels, son gives chase, tries the other way out and son whacks him again. bull turns and heads back to the pasture (gate had been left open), second bull sees first bull's decision and follows suit. disaster averted.
Sounds like there might be some bullshit involved in this story.
i know you pun/kid. somehow it was commemorated on video by dear wife as she is calling out to the boys to deal with it. it is 100% true.
Yes, literal meaning of the word bullshit intended. Any B.S I'm sure was from the scared bulls running back into their enclosure. It's a great story and one that I'm sure is funny now and terrifying at the time.
dear wife showed the video to me when i got home from work. nearly 15 yrs later i'm still not clear on how she got a video of that from the house. so i missed the terrifying part - knowing it turned out well. but man, watching that lead bull put his head down and start to step forward like that, whew. and a year or two later they were riding him, getting bucked off. oh, the fun and adventure of homeschooling...
Can that bull play the 4?
We already have a solid 4.
no, no handles, no offense. but he sure can block out under the basket...
He will get a foul called every time he slightly bumps someone ala Tractor Trailer.
See? You don't need opposable thumbs to play soccer.
Not sure if this is one of the athlete sons you've mentioned in the past, but if so, this absolutely needs to be included on the hudl film. I'm afraid to imagine what Harbaugh would do if he saw that on tape.
He would offer the son... and eat the bull.
And keep the cow… for milk.
last season he started on his college team, special teams and splitting a lot of snaps at his normal field position. he was a red shirt freshman preparing to take over for a senior. this year as a red shirt sophomore he is 'the guy' at his position. barring injury, really looking forward to this coming season.
Honest to goodness, I can’t help but have the barn training scene in Youngblood running through my head while reading this.
That particular sons recruiting was greatly impacted by Covid. During the temporary shut down a football season he put together a barnyard training video and sent it to the various coaches. From sand, standing jump onto a large round bale, doing pull ups on the bucket of a front end loader raised way up, and a few other things. It was pretty entertaining. We were just talking about it the other day and dear wife told me that it has had thousands of views.
Did it earn him a nickname?
That sounds like a story/explanation as to why or how somebody earned their nickname. - Example, “After he took on the bull, everyone said he must have brass balls, and we’ve called him BB ever since.” That’s a bad example, but you know what I mean.
no new nickname. his has always been 'the thrill'.
A video of Sparty players headed for the portal.
Maybe more importantly, can he fight bull?
For years I have described him as teenage captain America. That’s my too proud papa description, but I do think that if required he would take a bull if it was to save someone else. He’s a fine son.
You can’t ask for much more!
I agree with you that he looks like a good prospect, so why the hell not? Like Michigan can afford to be choosy? But will admissions allow it? At this point, I have BBALL BPONE.
Sorry, this basketball post has turned into a bull fighting themed OP.
For example, XM's kid (sans hockey stick):
The Blake Corum of bull fighting.
Is he a SG?
I’m all in but I’m concerned about transfer credits.
1 Euro is currently 1.08 US Dollars. So he should graduate early.
too soon
Admissions will find some 100 year bi-law that keeps Spanish education credentials on any level to from being allowed.
Most likely he wouldn't meet the foreign language requirements.
I heard he took Spanish and got a "B"
