Hoke: starting QB to be named later this week

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Was supposed to be named today.

Could it be that the longer this is dragged out, it's more likely to be Morris?

Hoke on QB decision: "We'll probably end up later in the week. we want to make sure we're right."

Hoke: "we feel good about both guys. other potential changes we'll get to later in the week"

The only non-injury scenario that makes any sense to play Morris is where the team is building for next year.  Unfortunately, Hoke is in no possition to play for next year.  He has to win games NOW!!

With the knowledge that he has to win now, what has anyone seen that makes it seem like Morris is more likely to win the game this Saturday?

If Hoke has to win now, why would he start a QB who has been awful and led the team to a 2-2 record? Morris could easily be the spark the offense needs. There are numerous examples across all sports of young players getting a shot and running with it after being deemed "not ready" days or weeks prior.

There's no way he's not. He was a shell of himself at the tail end of last season but Hoke still categorically stated he was the starter. This supposed wishy-washy-ness says, to me, anyway, that DG is not himself.

I'm not sure it makes much difference to Minnesota who we start. If we play Gardner, Minnesota stacks the box, blitzs like hell, and dares Gardner to beat them with his arm.

If we play Morris, Minnesota stacks the box, blitzs like hell, and dares Morris to beat them with his arm. Only difference is they don't have to account for Morris' legs like they would with Gardner.

If Hoke is trying to play his cards close to the chest, I get it. Don't give Minnesota more time to prepare for one QB or the other. But I really don't think it makes much difference. Both QBs at this point are turnover machines.

The past few weeks have been both interesting and somewhat astonishing in that there is so much anger and personal STFU type of comments on the website. I never realized how many "Michigan Fans?" find their reason for existence and the daily energy needed to go in life on based upon the progress or lack of success of the football team. This web site has turned into a food fight much like political talk shows and just being exposed to it wears me out! It is not fun, anymore, to read the comments. So, I wish all of you well and hope you survive the remaiinder of the season and find meaning in your life.

The purpose of this blog is to discuss football. If the purpose of your speech was to make us feel bad for discussing football on a football discussion website, then you failed. If the purpose was to somehow both climb up on a high horse and also look like a complete idiot, then, well, flying colors my boy. Flying colors.

I'm sure he's not sure what to do. Both quarterbacks are struggling and he needs a win. I see no way he announces a quarterback before kick off. I think he'll go with gardner and pray that he finds himself from two years ago and the start of last season. It's frustrating even more because the line has look decent and we. An actually run the ball at times.

I wouldn't mind if it were Morris, if he can actually complete throws down field. Seems like he can only complete screens or little dump off to the sidelines right now.

He seems to lack touch on his throws, everything is just a bullet

that Gardner does have a boo-boo and it hasn't healed as quickly as they were hoping, thus delaying the announcement of the starter.

Ugh.  Let's just keep throwing shit at the wall until this mess fixes itself.  Anyone else wish they were in a world where DB threw his support behind Rodriguez and gave him the resources to hire Casteel?

And just consider this.   If someone told you in 2007  that after Carr left Michigan would have no true quarterback options for the next 7 years and would start a guy who plays RB in the NFL and another who is a better receiver than QB for most of that time (let alone one that flunked out for a half season) , do you think the record would be any better than it is. 41-35    I wouldn't be too surprised.  IMO, this is he biggest problem with the program.  I'd rather see them alternate between Morris and Speight and lose the rest of their games  than see Devin Gardner take another snap at QB.  The path back to winning is goiing to be painful and will require tough decisions that will leave some upperclassmen on the bench.  Be men and make those decisions.  Believe in the players you took.  If Robinson had left in 2010 and Hoke had taken a QB, I don't think we'd be having this conversation at all and I've bene saying this and getting hammered on this board for it for 6 years.

Those of you who screamed "FIRE RICH ROD" got what you wanted.  How did that turn out?  Those of you who screamed FIRE AL BORGES got what you wanted.  How did that turn out?  And now you want to see a senior QB who has represented the school in an exemplary manner, both on and off the field, to pay for the fact that David Brandon is the person who needs to be fired?

Careful what you ask for...

If both were about equal all thru spring practice and up to the first game why would he even consider putting Morris in now?  Morris clearly isn't better or Hoke's evaluation was flawed.

It may be that there’s no good option now available to Michigan in deciding on a starting quarterback; but at this stage of the season, considering Brady Hoke's preference for coaching defense, I think that it would be fair to let Doug Nussmeier make that call.  He’s supposed to be running the offense.  He can’t have any special allegiance to any of the quarterbacks on the roster because he didn’t recruit any of them to Michigan, so his decision ought to be unbiased and strictly objective.

Doesn't Brady Hoke often say, "The best man plays, regardless of age" or something to that effect?

If he’s as good an offensive coordinator as people thought he was when he was hired, then let Nussmeier alone make that decision – whether he makes it today or at 3:30 p. m. on Saturday.  And then, especially if he’s going to be back up in the press box calling the plays against Minnesota, he’ll have a new vantage point from which to evaluate his players.  If it’s not progressing as well as he’d hoped, then he can make a switch or adjust his game plan without having to worry about either Devin Gardner or Shane Morris arguing with him on the sidelines.

Finding a championship caliber quarterback (or simply a winning quarterback) often involves a matter of luck; and rarely does it yield a future NFL star.  The task is to find a leader who can smoothly operate the offensive system and be an inspiration to the team on the field, while avoiding critical mistakes.

Just from an historical perspective, here’s a list of the national championship quarterbacks since the 1997 college football season:

1997: Michigan (Brian Griese); Nebraska (Scott Frost)
1998: Tennessee (Peyton Manning)
1999: Florida State (Chris Weinke)
2000: Oklahoma (Josh Heupel)
2001: Miami (Ken Dorsey)
2002: Ohio State (Craig Krenzel)
2003: LSU (Matt Mauck); USC (Matt Leinart)
2004: USC (Matt Leinart)
2005: Texas (Vince Young)
2006: Florida (Chris Leak; Tim Tebow)
2007: LSU (Matt Flynn)
2008: Florida (Tim Tebow)
2009: Alabama (Greg McElroy)
2010: Auburn (Cam Newton)
2011: Alabama (AJ McCarron)
2012: Alabama (AJ McCarron)
2013: Florida State (Jameis Winston)

Realized the error after logging out, but after you'd already made the correction; and then it was too late for me to make the correction. (Yet another improvement I'll be hoping to see -- ability to edit for corrections after logging out -- when the Great MGoBlog Website Updated Revisions occur In The Year 2525.)
