Higher Math at Dominick's
Michigan Today has posted another in its fabulous series of James Tobin-authored Ann Arbor vignettes, this one on Dominick's, the role it played in the studies of a math Ph.D. student in the late '70s/early '80s and the impression he made on Dominick DeVarti.
Maybe I'm the last one to know this bit of A2 lore, but according to the article there's a link between Dominick's and Dave Brandon.
Here's to the geniuses like Zevi Miller who over the years have taken up temporary residence at Dominick's and here's to "the genius of homemade sangria in glass jars".

I've forgotten lots of higher and lower math as a direct result of Dominick's.

I hadn't thought of that. I can't wait until next Spring, now. Damn you, rcm!

Helped a professor one summer who had his office hours for the class he taught at Dominick's. We would just sit there and drink sangria for a couple hours, I think the students learned to come early if they wanted real help.
Interesting story OP

I think I forgot a bit of differential equations as a result of drinking an entire large mason jar of sangria celebrating my friend completing her prelim defense. Awesome story.

...for that. I don't think I'll be waiting for Sam Elliott to appear, though.

The author, Jim Tobin, taught a class I took in college. Good dude.

Be careful. My wife and I stopped at Doms two years ago for memories and drinks. We paid with my debit card, and it was stolen and used a lot down south at some truck stop place. We got the money back from the bank. I know it was Doms because it was the only place I had used the card for months, and the kid took the card away from the window to run it.
We called the owner and he literally said "So what?".
I did call the secret service but I doubt the owner has started keeping a better eye on his employees.

I lost my wallet outside of Dominick's once. It was a crazy night, and I had no idea where my wallet might be until I got a call from the owner, who found it. He must have noticed my fake ID next to my real one, and didn't say a word about it.
Side story, Dominick's sangria (this was pre-Constant Buzz days) gave me the worst hangover I've had in my life. Lasted 3 days...don't know if it's all the Mad Dog they throw in there or what.
Still, it's one of my absolute favorite things about A2.

I ever did as an undergrad was completed at Dominick's. EECS 484, I do not miss you.
