Hemingway To The...Lions?

Submitted by Mr. Yost on

I just received a newsletter from an NFLDraft website with a mock draft attached...

I opened up knowing it was full of shit, but I wanted to see who they had my Lions taking. What do I see? Junior Hemingway, 7th Round, Detroit Lions.

What do you guys think?

Other Michigan players listed...

Mike Martin - 4th Round
Kevin Koger - 5th Round
David Molk - 6th Round
Troy Woolfolk - 6th Round
Ryan Van Bergen - 7th Round

For those that are interested...here were the other Lions picks:

1. Janoris Jenkins, CB, Florida (got kicked out of school, currently in JuCo)

2. DJ Fluker, OT, Alabama

3. Michael Brewster, C, Ohio

4. Melvin Ingram, DE, S. Carolina

5. Ryan Houston, RB, UNC

The best available approach doesn't work the same way it has the last few years for us anymore though. The Lions had serious talent deficiencies after Millen was fired and we needed help at every single position. After 3 years we're solid on offense besides basically every spot on the o-line, As someone already stated, there isn't a need for elite corners if you have a great pass rush, which the Lions have, so I don't think we should take a corner in the first round. I think tackle is our biggest need at the moment especially with an aging Backus, but center and guard have to be adressed too. The only starter I see on the Lions O-line is Rob Sims. That being said, O-line needs to be adressed early on in the draft. I don't care what positions are filled, just get talent.

I think the knock against him, is 1) his size and where he fits, and 2) plays on a crappy D and doesn't put up a lot of stats.

I don't think he's big enough to play NT in the pros, but is too big to play a rush end.  I've heard some say his ideal position is a 3-4 DE.  So there's going to be questions as to where he fits with his size.  And second is that as an NT on a crappy D in college means he doesn't put up great stats with all the double's he takes up.  And then there's no one else funnel people toward him (at least the last two years).  Brandon Graham was still a high pick on a crappy D because he was a DE and was still able to wreck havok off the edge.  But with a good season this year and a good showing at a senior bowl and maybe he'll rise.  I think he'll be a great pick up for whoever gets him though.

Melvin Ingram being available in the 4th round must be some sort of joke. Dude is on the 1st round bubble right now. He's been arguably the most impressive draft-eligible defender in the country through the first four weeks.

It's also extremely unlikely that D.J. Fluker comes out as a redshirt sophomore without a 1st round grade. He's got a ton of upside, but there's no way he foregoes two year of eligibility for late-2nd round money.

The projections on the Michigan players don't look too bad at this point. Martin is probably in that 4th round range and Van Bergen in the 6th-7th round range. I might flip Molk (to the 5th round) and Koger (to the 6th round) and I don't think Woolfolk and Hemingway get drafted, but both should definitely be priority free agents.

So much of the draft gets determined by how well guys test at the combine, that it's impossible to tell, but I think those rounds look like reasonalbe guesses.

If Hemingway can run something around 4.6, he's probably a late round draft pick looking to a Jason Avant type role. Similar with Koger, although he's looking toward a 4.7-4.8. His hands are going to spook scouts, though. The TE's in vogue now in the NFL, so that probably helps his chances. Molk is small, so he'll have to put up a bunch of reps to prove that he's unusually strong for a smaller player. Woolfolk's injury history is going to scare off a bunch of teams, but someone may take a flyer if he runs really well.

Martin and van Bergen... Martin's kind of trapped without a position, His best spot, I'd think, is as a 3 technique DT, but there are fewer of those positions with more teams going to 3-4s. Don't think he's heavy enough to play NT and might not be tall enough to play DE in a 3-4 (those guys average 6'4" ish). Van Bergen will be right on the 7th round/free agent line. Wouldn't surprise me to see him make a roster next year.

i realize that martin's numbers arent fantastic (and I dont expect they will be much more impressive when the season is over) but I dont see martin slipping past the third round. i expect scouts who watch his film will recognize his dominance. plus i strongly suspect he will thoroughly impress at the combine.

unfortunately i dont see woolfolk getting drafted. hes too injury-prone and hasnt looked stellar so far this yr.

hemingway is an interesting one. hes not particularly tall and not at all fast. his strength is that hes big, can jump, has good body control, and is incrediblly good at high-pointing the ball. My concern is that he wont project well against NFL db's with better ball skills.

are certainly on the right path but it's early in the season and they are by no means a shoo-in for the playoffs (although it looks like they'll probably make it). Years ago my kids asked me when was the last time the Lions were good - like really good. I told them to ask their grandfather because it was long before I walked this earth. Hopefully that will change soon.

I think Koger will be gone by the second round and Martin will be taken by the end of the third round at least.  With  the improved defense his status will rise.

What has Koger done in his career to warrant a 2nd round selection? Is he going to get to the combined and run a 4.4 or something?

I'm not trolling, but c'mon. That's crazy talk.

Everyone is so high on Martin, but right now...what seperates him from Terrence Taylor (1 4th round pick). Gabe Watson was a 4th round pick. Rob Renes...the guy he may most resemble...he was a 7th round pick.

I'm not saying he can't go higher than the 4th round. I could see him going in the 2nd...but I could also see him going in the 6th. We need to quit acting like we have any player outside of Denard Robinson and Taylor Lewan that is currently a LOCK to be drafted in the first half of the draft. If we did. We're currently not using that talent for good.

on what basis are you comparing mike martin to terrance taylor besides position? terrance taylor was essentially a space eater that specialized against the run. he was negged for having poor conditioning, an inability to shed blockers, and poor use of his hands. mike martin, on the other hand, is two inches taller, faster, stronger, has good conditioning, and has tremendous hand technique. and im willing to bet that he puts up pretty ridiculous numbers at the nfl combine.

excepting some injury between now and the draft, I would be absolutely shocked if martin slipped past the 4th round (and extremely suprised if he made it out of the 3rd)
