Hate Week - History Edition

On today's edition of OSU can rot in hell, we discuss our favorite games, plays, and moments from the rivalry.

Seeing Tim Biakabutuka ruin OSU's perfect season in 1995 was a thing of beauty.  We had already lost three games and were ranked around 18.  OSU was undefeated and ranked #2.  No one expected us to win (except probably John Cooper).

We just need to win!  My OSU colleague at work was talking trash and just told me he expects a 35-13 Buckeye win.  I had no rebuttal, because we have always come up short in recent history.  I have no data to say otherwise.  I just let him talk.

I browsed 11sisterfuckers.com for a bit last night just to get a sense of what their fans are thinking.  They're fairly confident, but some are concerned about us putting Fields on his ass.

Oh, and the general consensus is that they would rather beat us than win a NC.  Their hatred goes deep and burns hot.  I admire it.

This is Hate Week right?  So instead of reminiscing about something good (like Desmond's punt return in 91) I'm going to remember something I hated - the game the 1974 game which was the 2016 game on steroids for Michigan getting screwed.

That game, like the one in 2016, was played in Columbus and just like 2016 Michigan was undefeated and while history does not allow me to look up the hometowns of the officiating crew I would be shocked if they didnt all come from Columbus proper.  Michigan dominated the game from start to finish but got stopped "allegedly" on multiple 4th down runs inside the Buckeye 10 yard line.  In this game Barrett wasnt short - every spot Michigan got was and despite jumping out to a 10-0 lead, Michigan trailed 12-10 in the final seconds of the game.

At this point Mike Lantry entered the game for a chance at redemption following his two narrow misses in the 73 game in AA.  The ball was spotted, the kick was clean and true, yet somehow the officials decided it was no good - perhaps because it was kicked too high for them to see or perhaps because like in 2016, they were cheating fucksticks determined to deliver a win to their beloved Buckeyes at all cost.  Watch for yourself and get pissed off all over again at those cheaters like I still am, 45 years ago and still to this day.

InB4 buckeye trolls infest the thread.

I'll never understand how Miller hung on to the ball when Clark decleated him in 2012. Great, clean hit. In a loss because the offense sucked.

Braxton Miller was a cyborg of some kind. Guy got taken to the hospital after getting drilled into the ground by Purdue. Came back next week as if nothing ever happened. And then Frank Clark comes off his blindside with one of the most brutal hits I've ever seen. Full speed, untouched, straight line, and somehow he holds onto the ball. Literally any other QB would've fumbled that ball and would've at least missed the next series or two.

1969 - on the way, 94 traffic was stopped for the Ohio fans headed north.

A bus had a giant scarlett banner along the side, with gray letters:

Today Michigan

Tomorrow the World!

Barry Pierson punt return to the 3 in that game.

Here is hoping that Charbonnet and Haskins channel their inner Biakabatuka! BTW... This game is our super bowl and I think we've got a great chance of eking out a victory. IMHO, the bucknuts are aiming (to at least some psychological degree) past this game whether they want to admit it or not. They are already in the big ten championship game and looking ahead to a final four birth in the playoff. We are more hungry and motivated and on the ascent in all phases of the game. Plus, I think Fields will be less than 100% as he is nursing a sore back and other maladies.

The game 50 years ago, at least for me, is hard to overlook is one of my faves. So many good memories back in the day.

In 2003, Keith Jackson had been doing only west coast games for around 3-4 years and had not been to the Big House for quite a while.  I thought it was really cool that he and Fouts came to the 100th playing of The Game.  There was so much emotion in the stadium that day, both teams were really good, and it just felt right to have Jackson doing the game.  That was my favorite Michigan v. Ohio State game of all time.

I'll recall 1989.  A somewhat nondescript game featuring 10-2 Michigan and 8-4 OSU.  Michigan won 28-18, and nothing notable during the game makes it standout in the history of the series.  Except one thing: it was Bo's last game in the Big House.

I was there (on leave during my Navy days) with a friend from high school.  We watched from half way up the far corner of the EZ to the right of Michigan's bench.  When Platt's interception sealed it late, the tension let out of the stadium and a celebration of Bo ensued.  Walking around on the field after the game was just awesome.

If I recall correctly, that game contained the greatest MANBALL drive ever.

I think Michigan got the ball at their own 20 up 10 with 8 minutes left and ran it something like 14 straight times to run the clock down to a minute or so.  Don't recall if we even scored, just drained the time from that clock.  Incredible O-Line (Skrepenak, Doehring, Dingman, Elliot) and great backs (Hoard, Bunch).  Good times

I was there too and remember that game.

One nit-pick though.  Bo didn't announce his retirement until about three weeks after the game ended.  So while we were definitely celebrating I'm 99,99% sure we were just celebrating the win, not Bo, cause we didnt know yet he was leaving.

I was at this game as well.  I remember sitting next to an OSU fan who was the size of Chris Farley, smoking a stogie during the game, and using me as an ash tray.  As a 14 year old kid I did not have the nerve to stand up to this cooler pooper.

He did however; give me props when I predicted that Tripp Welbourne and Vada Murray will block the extra point on one of their touchdowns and they did!

I wasn't a fan, or alive, during the good times, I've only ever been around for the bad. But aside from 2011, my favorite was probably 2013. Yes, I know it ended poorly, and yes, Hoke/Borges ruined any possibility for an upset by not changing the call, but Gardner's performance that day was nothing short of heroic. Almost beating the #3 team in America by himself on a broken foot, on a day where everyone expected OSU to roll into town and whoop Michigan by 5-6 TDs, myself included. That was a really fun game to be at, ending notwithstanding.

Had they won that game, Gardner's performance would've been remembered as one of the greatest individual performances in the history of college football. He would've earned himself a seat in the Michigan Pantheon of Individual Excellence (if he doesn't have a seat already). He deserved that glory after the hell he endured that season. He deserved better from his coaches. Unfortunately, no one outside of Michigan fandom will ever remember it or care about it. All they'll ever see is that Michigan lost.

Don't get me wrong, I hate thinking this way. I really do. I want nothing more than to see Michigan finally get over the hump. They have the ability to do it. But minus seeing it against a 6-6 Luke Fickell-coached OSU, I've never seen it happen as a fan. All I've really ever known are close, yet soul-crushing losses or humiliating beatdowns.

I know it hasn't happened forever and that it won't last forever, but for me personally, its really hard to go into this game and assume Michigan finds a way to win until I see the final result change on the field.

I believe they can do it, but until results prove otherwise, I don't believe they will do it.

I happened to be at that game (the Biakabutuka game), the first home game I'd attended since I graduated a number of years before. I went to the game with various extended family that included my sis-in-law who was a Northwestern student at the time. Wearing her NU sweatshirt, she received a lot of supporting cheers from M fans as we approached the stadium, despite M having lost to NU earlier in the season. It was M's victory over OSU that propelled NU to only its second Rose Bowl game and first in 47 years (NU did not play OSU that season and went 8-0 in the B1G). We had seats in the student section and wound up standing for the entire game, taking turns with my bro-in-law holding my 7 y.o. nephew in our arms so he could see the action. It was worth it since my nephew later attended UM!

2011, fourth quarter, sitting in the south end zone. It was tribal. Special K played "Lose Yourself" and we collectively lost our shit. You haven't lived until you see an 80 y/o woman jumping up and down to Eminem.

Then came "Build Me up Buttercup".

The hype videos/game footage/bumps of every preview and in-game broadcast always feature the Woodson-Boston "fight" in which their blocking and hitting spills over into a full-on boxing match, with Boston throwing an actual punch (he didn't get ejected somehow - I like to think he would in today's game). It's become an iconic image of the ferocity of the rivalry

But, I seem to remember this being a common occurrence in games of that era. I'm pretty sure David Terrell got in a similar scuffle with an Ohio State player and I also seem to remember Braylon mixing it up with someone as well. But I've never been able to find these clips - they're not shown nearly as much as the Woodson-Boston one.

Does anybody else recall these incidents? They weren't that memorable I guess, but they always get me psyched up when I see them.

(I'm trying to watch the 2003 game right now to find it).

Hell yes. Chuck took his helmet off stepped into Boston. That's when I knew we were winning the the game.

I was watching something on BTN with Braylon talking about his scuffle and saying something like "I was prepared to go with somebody. I was thinking about Woodson and realized this was something that was expected."

Let us see if Harbaugh can do something special.

His record against rivals is overblown--and of course the Big Game thing is overblown. When you are at Michigan (like any big school) every game is big and the microscope is on.

Harbaugh has this albatross hanging around his neck and he welcomed it when he came here.

Referees, shmeferees--it is tiume to Put up or Shut up.

Next year in Columbus will NOT be the year to try to break a five game streak. This is the year--Bo did it, Mo and Lloyd it it repeatedly--it is time to beat Ohio State.

End of Story.

My freshman year at UM was 1973.  UM outplayed OSU in the Game.  They played to a 10-10 tie and scum ADs of OSU and MSU (UM alumnus) (among others) voted to send OSU to the Rose Bowl.  What a disappointment.  Here's hoping for revenge.
