Who's got it better than us?

Just experienced 1of the high points in my life: Speaking w/ Michigan grad & legend James Earl Jones. Doesn't get any better! Just doesn't!

At Albion, JEJ was the inaugural speaker for a lecture series that would kick off the academic year. A good friend of mine was tasked with introducing him. He also spoke, the next morning, with students from the Honors Institute and theater department. And apparently, beforehand, the President of the college, other representatives, my friend and his then-girlfriend all took JEJ and his team to breakfast. Since this was Albion, they ended up at Denny's (not Sure if it was the Jackson or Marshall location). In his best voice, he ordered "Coffee. Black," and kept repeating, in laughing tones "Moons Over My-Hammy."

It's my understanding that James Earl Jones was merely the voice of Darth Vader, and that another actor actually did the scenes in costume. In fact I think that other actor may have just recently passed. These facts are probably just a few Google clicks away, but it is Saturday and I am at my leisure.

I thought he died at the end, in Return of the Jedi, also in Conan, and in Clear and Present Danger, and in the Lion King, and Dr Strangelove. Holy crap that guy dies in a lot of great movies.

People will come. They'll come to Michigan for reasons they can't even fathom. They'll turn up State Street or Main Street not knowing for sure why they're doing it. They'll arrive at the gates as innocent as children, longing for the past. "Of course, we won't mind if you look around," you'll say. "It's only $(fill in the amount) per person."

They'll pass over the money without even thinking about it: for it is money they have and peace they lack. And they'll walk out to the bleachers; sit there wearing their maize and blue Michigan gear on a perfect afternoon. They'll find they have reserved seats somewhere around the Big House along one of the sidelines or in the end zones, where they sat when they were children and cheered their heroes.  And they'll watch the game and it'll be as if they dipped themselves in magic waters. The memories will be so thick they'll have to brush them away from their faces. People will come.

The one constant through all the years has been Michigan football. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But Michigan football has marked the time. This stadium, this game: it's a part of our past. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again. Oh... people will come. People will most definitely come.
