Harbaugh Continues to Push Revenue Sharing for Players

Submitted by wildbackdunesman on January 7th, 2024 at 2:24 PM

Brace for more investigations as Harbaugh is using media press conferences for the championship to push for the NCAA to have player revenue sharing and the article even mentions that Harbaugh advocated players to unionize.

Says others including head coaches should take a pay cut to make it happen.

I vomited in my mouth a little when I saw the link went to the NY Post, but I was there so I read it.  Once again, I have to applaud Harbaugh for taking a stand and using his voice to help others.  Although...  I have to wonder exactly what he meant when he said this:

“It’s one thing for somebody to say, well, they’re getting NIL, but the billions that are being generated, they’re not getting much of, a very small percentage. They’re getting the same amount as I got in the ’80s. You’re getting a scholarship, room, board, books and tuition. So it’s like, come on, man, let’s do the right thing here.”

Emphasis mine, but, ugh, how much did Bo pay Harbaugh to play at Michigan?  LOL!!!

You need to watch the interview for context. He was asked about NIL and addressed that.  NIL is separate and if players do that the way it is supposed to work, i.e be a spokesman for a product, they have to work for that. Getting paid to play the game with rev share doesn’t happen.  Everyone else, ESPN, CFP, NCAA, Conferences, Schools, and Coaches get their cut but not the players.

Feels like he’s taking every media opportunity on the NCAA’s biggest stage to promote revenue sharing. Almost as if it’s his response to the NCAA’s action against him on his way out. #QuemarLosBarcos #Carpediem

I know Harbaugh has never shied away from speaking his mind, but when he’s saying things like coaches should be taking a pay cut to make it happen, I wonder if this is just more telling of him heading off to the NFL after this game is over.

Harbaugh has very few friends in collegiate coaching circles, and statements like that will give him even less friends. Will probably just make him even more enemies. Don’t get me wrong, he’s not saying a single thing that isn’t true, and I applaud his commitment to speak his mind and not be afraid of what anyone thinks. But I wonder if this is indicative at all of a “Fuck you all I’m off to the league next week, anyway,”

Or knowing Harbaugh, this could also just be a way for him to use the sport’s biggest stage to throw his message right into the NCAA’s face. This could very much be a “let’s twist the knife while I’m here” kind of moment.

It is what it is … he is leaving himself as a target , wrongly as it may be … we’re talking about multi million $$$$ , and those who are currently getting those $$$$ don’t want to give them up … these investigations aren’t going anywhere, and if Jim stays he better be 100% certain that all moves made are within the strict letters of NCAA and B1G laws  !!! They will be waiting to pounce !!!

I'm starting to understand what his current and prior bosses deal with on a regular basis. As unpopular as this might be to say: I'm glad I'm *not* his AD or team owner.  He complicates the discussion of CFB at every opportunity.

But. He is Mr. Football.

Coach? Win this next game, hoist the trophy, and enjoy standing at the pinnacle of college football. Enjoy proving all the naysayers wrong about you and the team. Win. It. All.

This is the main reason I want Jim to stick around at Michigan. He has a unique opportunity to force change that benefits all college athletes while fighting the hegemony of the NCAA. It's bigger than just our team and no one else has shown the courage to speak up like he has.

And the NCAA continues to push, shove, beat him with sticks, lead pipes, and every other blunt object within reach - out the door - when they will dead bolt it and turn the lights off and pretend they're not there.

The box has been opened dumb fucks.  Harbs isn't the last guy that's gonna voice this opinion.  He's just the first guy that had the balls enough to say it.

NCAA is fucked (can we say that here?) either way:

If Harbaugh stays, one of the flagship programs of NCAA football will advocate for paying players, if he's an NFL coach, he's going to continue to beat this drum.  That could even be WORSE for the NCAA.

The Harbaugh family tends to win in the long run.  They can seem nice, but they are all (Jack, John, Jim) ruthless assassins.  This is a crew who RELISH competition.

He's exactly right.

I've been saying for years--and got into quite an argument about it here once, several years ago--that coaches' salaries and all other expenses will go down when players get paid, because they'll have to. That's where the money for players has to come from.

I'm glad our coach is out front speaking the truth about this.

Agree with him and I assume it's coming eventually, but what does 'revenue sharing' look like when it comes to the haves and have-nots in college football?

Because at the end of the day, I don't know ANY Michigan fans who want actual parity (i.e. Michigan State and Rutgers able to get comparable talent), they want Michigan to still be one of the 'haves' (maybe just with Alabama, Georgia and Ohio State knocked down a bit to our level) and that's going to somehow still involve offering our guys more than those lesser tier programs can offer their guys.
