Harbaugh Certain To End B1G QB Streak In Near Future

Submitted by Muttley on

He is the Quarterback Whisperer, after all.

And the Big Ten's streak of consecutive drafts without a quarterback taken in first round extended to 21.

The last? Kerry Collins in 1995 following PSU's undefeated 1994 season. (5th pick overall taken by the Carolina Panthers.)

This is a stupid and meaningless stat. It's not like the Big Ten hasn't put any starting QBs in the NFL since then. We had 4-5 starters this past season, depending on how you count Hoyer. That's more than almost any conference can say, and 3 of them are sure-fire long term starters. Would you rather be USC where a bunch of QBs get drafted early and almost none of them pan out?

I thought you were wrong on the internet, so I started making a list.  But you're probably correct.  The best of the bunch is Carson Palmer, who might have found a good pharmacist. Then there's Mark Sanchez, who continues to draw paychecks (I think), and maybe Matt Cassell (but 7th round). After that there's just a bunch of dudes.

Easy there buddy. No need to get hostile. It is astounding that for 20+ years no NFL team has taken a B1G QB in the first round given all the quality B1G QBs that have played and done very well in the NFL over that same time period.

is kind of a trick question.  If a QB is getting drafted in the first round, it probably means he had a great college career.  In turn, especially at programs like USC and Michigan, it also probably means the football team was pretty successful.

Obviously, going in the first round and being a stud NFL is the best of both worlds, but my main allegiance lies with the Michigan football team so while I love to see UM players excel in the pros, I get more enjoyment out of the Michigan football being successful on Saturdays in the fall.

Isn't going to do shit. He hasn't developed a QB that is any different than anybody else. Worse is because of his childish behavior more and more recruits and their parents think crazy Jim is a liability to their future, not a asset. As time goes on Michigan itself will start to see he is also a liability to the program itself. The guy is a total piece of shit. Narrsasitic, Arrogant, and self serving, we are all seeing more and more of it at every turn.

The scouts must have missed the October 7, 2000 game against us where he was fantastic. 32 for 44 with 2 TDs, 1 INT, plus 10 carries for 80 yards! And that was against a pretty damn good Michigan team. I was there for that last second FG loss.

We sat in the north endzone after that game and watched them storm the field. Purdue had apparently fortified the goalposts that year because they would not come down no matter how many kids climbed atop. One (wise?) kid wearing a full spiderman outfit/onesie was up there equipped with a wrench trying to take apart the the bracket that connected the posts. It was quite humorous to watch.

has a terrific record of drafting quarterbacks with franchise-saving potential in the first round.

Consider the three latest first round picks who almost certainly will either be out of the league or holding a clipboard for the majority of their career.

Now, let's consider two almost certain first ballot HOF qbs who were overlooked after splendid work as Big Ten signal-callers. I mean even Brian Griese as a successor to John Elway practically worked out better than Johnny Manziel, while Tom Brady and Drew Brees are still playing and leading their teams as the ulitmate brand of franchise signal callers.

I mean the Redskins wasted millions and three years on RG !!! and now have a Big Ten qb as their starting qb.

How about Russell Wilson as an ACC-Big Ten hybrid qb who is already one of the game's best qbs?

I mean outside of Cam Newton, an almost can't miss guy who has won at every level of football and is a magnificent athlete, can you name a first round qb outside of the Mannings who have actually lived up to thier draft status? Pretty rare. Maybe Mariota and Jameis Winston get there. We'll see.

Jabrill is going to be a redshirt sophomore this season then probably leave for the NFL. You have to be out of high school for 3 years. Barrett could have actually declared this year. You think OSU players have a habit of sticking around for their full eligibility after the ship-jumping this season?

At the end of 2015 draft, I remember tweets saying the Big Ten's 1st Round QB woes would end as Hackenburg, Cook, and Jones were all destined for the first round. How things have changed in such a short time.

Wasn't Chad Henne taken with the first pick of the second round?

And Drew Henson would have been the #1 overall pick (or close to it) if not for the Steinbrenner (spl?) and the Yankees.

During that time frame the Big 10 has produced two of the greatest quarterbacks of all time (Brady and Brees), and one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL today (Wilson).  So I think this stat says a lot more about NFL drafting than the quality of Big 10 quarterback play.

Brady, Brees and Wilson versus JaMarcus Russell, hmmm.  Tough call.
