Harbaugh's Plan for Success

Submitted by xtramelanin on

Mates,

Came across an article about Harbaugh speaking at a high school graduation ceremony at Coronado High School on Coronado Island in CA, after his Mission Viejo camp on Wednesday.  He gave them 7 tips on success.

1.  Start everything you do with respect

2.  Be honest...says his dad told him flat-out, never lie, never cheat, never steal, it won't be worth it.

3.  Learn to follow.  Obedience is an underrated talent.

4.  Do one more thing and find one more thing to do.  Don't advertise it, just do it.

5. Hustle.  Hustling at all times.  Better today than yesterday, better tomorrow than today.

6.  Compete.   Wake up each day and attack with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind.

7.  Go back to the ABC's...A -- Accelerate, get going.  B--Balance, finding balance.   C--confidence.

Thought you all might enjoy reading these.  Have a great weekend.   More commits, please.

Good stuff..and he seems to embodies all of that in spades.

But more than anything, I'm amazed that he had it in him to turn up for this ceremony in the middle of what seemed like an absolute grind of a week...where does he get all that energy?

so i'm sure that was the kicker to get him there.  when we lived on coronado years ago we used to go to the high school football games there.  they weren't overly talented, but it was such a pleasant place to go see a game right down the road from home.

Don't forget AIDA either.

Attention. Do I have your attention?

Interest. Are you interested? I know you are because it's fuck or walk. You close, or you hit the bricks.

Decision. Have you made your decision for Christ?

Action.

A-I-D-A gentlemen.

Harbaugh would be briliant at giving that speech, and he would have finished by saying "R-F-I-T-G-T. RIGHT FOOT IN THE GROUND, THROW."

Interesting comparison between two on the list:

3.  Learn to follow.
6.  Compete.

On the surface the two might appear to conflict, but the more I think about it, the more I think they're compatible.  But I've not yet figured out exactly how.

Something to noodle on tonight.

This is in the ballpark of what I was thinking ... competition within the players and positions, but obedience to the team goals as embodied by the coach.

In a non-football setting this can be an issue if there's not a good understanding of the common goal, and those who should be leaders have abdicated.  I've seen this in my business career where feckless management has failed to express mission and objective, and that leaves the people working at cross-purposes.  There's competition -- usually for the wrong goal (power or notice) -- and very little following except following oneself.  That's a mess.

Do one more thing and find one more thing to do. Don't advertise it, just do it.

I feel like #4 above is going to be a common theme on the football team for a couple seasons, and this isn't a bad thing at all. For those who have been to those meetings where they attempt to drill Continuous Improvement into your head, "every day, a little up". It's not a bad phrase and it is definitely applicable to not only football but life in general. Harbaugh definitely seems to live all of those principles though.

I dont like learn to follow....I know he  means it as a teamwork type think but this world has too many followers.

that what you perceived. I agree that life time followers will be led down the wrong path too often.  I believe, however, that following as it pertains to JH and his father before him equates to finding the right leader and follow his path of accomplishments.  It is well known that the best followers make the best leaders as long as they are wise enough to chose whom to follow.
