Harbaugh's DC Fangio Staying in NFL

Submitted by alum96 on

No surprise here as there was no smoke around Fangio to Michigan, as I am sure Harbaugh broached the subject with Fangio at some point along the way but reports indicate Fangio will remain in NFL and try for 49ers job where he and the DL coach are 2 front runners.

For those not familiar Fangio is a 30 year NFL coach who went to Stanford for 1 year in 2010 and turned Stanford's D on its head overnight.  Stanfords first 3 years of D were.... challenged.  Then followed Jim back to the NFL and has run the 49ers elite D for 4 years.

Would have been a coup for Fangio to follow Jim here but aside from that 1 year at Stanford he has been a NFL guy his whole career.  Different pros and cons between him and Durkin.  Both will probably be HCs within 3 years somewhere.

The pro for Durkin is that he is known for his great recruiting. Not sure if the same can be said for Fangio.

Durkin was named Rivals.com's Recruiter of the Year in 2012 while at Florida, and was known as Muschamp's top recruiter.

I've followed JH's head coaching career since USD hire.  His track record is hiring the best available coaches irregardless of age or prior jobs.  Absolute confidence in his hiring decisions.  Whoever comprises his staff will be great coaches, and if they cannot cut it, they will be let go in short order.  M and JH will soon create a coaching tree, something we have NOT seen since 1989.

Well there are always worries for a relatively unproven commodity.  Fangio is proven, Durkin could be a product of Muschamp.  That said he worked with Durkin @ Stanford so he is not new to Jim.

And yes Jim will slilce a bitch if you dont perform so I am fine with that ideal.  I just dont want to repeat the Stanford experience of going thru 1 new DC every year until he finds the right one.  Fangio and Harbaugh are like 2 gloes so you'd have zero worries.

Stability is important.  But the Harbaugh of 2015 shouldl have a lot more guys interested in working for him of higher quality than the unknown guy in 2007, 2008 at Stanford.

Hoping Durkin is a mini Fangio who is 20 years younger.

Fangio is a fantastic coach, and would be wonderful here, but he's looking at a HC gig, most likely. Between Durkin and (most likely) retaining Mattison, I think we're going to be (better than) fine.

How long does it typically take for new coaches to assemble a staff? And is JH under more pressure to do so quickly due to recruiting? I can see the immediate draw of Harbaugh to players on the offensive side of the ball but it seems like defensive recruits would be more hesitant to buy in.

Greed...for a lack of a better word...is good.

I know - I just want MOAR!

Give me the top 5 NFL coach ...with the top 5 NFL DC.  Get in my belly!

Will be fun to watch to see what Durkin does - never expected Fangio to leave to go here but had a 1% hope in my heart :)
