UVA's DC was every UVA fan's favorite assistant coach for the way he handled himself and the team during the offseason...Then he turned a respectable, top-one-third defense into one of the worst in the country in just one season

Hate to break it to you, but Mattison isn't taking over a top 1/3 defense.  He's taking over the worst defense in the history of Michigan football (which broke the "worst defense" records set by the same team the prior 2 seasons).

Who knew that a coach saying positive things (and not blaming his players for failure) was such a bad thing?  Should the fans just grumble until we have a top 10 defense next season, or is excitement based on hype alone reserved only for the previous HC?

No shit, really?  Nobody else who read that took that to mean that's what I thought of our defense.  Not to beat you over the head with the point, but since that seems to be what it takes: Obviously the point is that anyone can talk about fast, aggressive defenses, and everyone always does, and it has precisely zero correlation to what happens on the field in the fall.

Who knew that a coach saying positive things (and not blaming his players for failure) was such a bad thing?

Who knew I was saying I wish the coach wouldn't say positive things?  Only dahblue, apparently.  Again I will beat you over the head with the point: The coaches will always say positive things, and it has nothing to do with what happens on the field.

Should the fans just grumble until we have a top 10 defense next season,

No, they should take everything with a grain of salt and not expect a top 10 defense based on interviews in January.

or is excitement based on hype alone reserved only for the previous HC?

Excitement based on hype alone is stupid.  Excitement based on results and resume is worthwhile.  I guess you've let it slip from your brain that RR had outstanding results pre-Michigan, didn't have shitty defenses, and the hype wasn't hype alone.  Interview hype is always worthless fluff.  Always.  It has nothing to do with what happens on the field.  Now that I've said that at least three times, maybe you've achieved comprehension and can stop the straw man assembly line.

So, your "point" is that

coaches will always say positive things, and it has nothing to do with what happens on the field.

That's awesome!  So, since nothing has happened yet for the new staff, we probably shouldn't say anything positive...only negative...like you.  Of course, if was a different story when your boy was ruining (oops, I meant "running") the show.  Oh wait...it was ok to be excited about RR, even before he started at Michigan because he had a good record in the Big East (unlike, say, Greg Mattison who had a dominant NFL defense):

Excitement based on results and resume is worthwhile.  I guess you've let it slip from your brain that RR had outstanding results pre-Michigan, didn't have shitty defenses, and the hype wasn't hype alone.

It's funny that you're still so giddy about RR once his resume at Michigan proved so deficient.  Anyway, it's time for you to get over the fact that RR is gone.  The war is over.  You can come out of the mountains.  Nealy everyone else is really happy about the state of affairs in A2.

I never see you post except to come out of the woodwork to bring up Rich Rodriguez whenever I say anything about the new staff, so up til now I think I've been pretty restrained, but: you're being fucking retarded about this.  You brought up Rodriguez, not me.  You're the one who reads everything that's not sunshine and rainbows about the new staff as pro-RR, not me.  What I said had nothing to do with Rich Rodriguez.  In fact I distinctly remember saying,

I like Mattison

but I suppose that slipped past your reading comprehension.

But hey.  I guess you like headlines, empty words, and hype.  Guess that does it for you.  So here's a nice headline that ought to get you really pumped up about having a new defensive coordinator:

New Michigan defensive coordinator wants "the best tackling team in America."

That should get you pretty psyched up.

Mattison is well known for having pressure based defenses, which he will no doubt bring to Michigan.  One of my biggest complaints about watching the team this year was a lack of pressure in terms of blitzing.  Or maybe I just didn't notice it.  My thought was, if we're going to get beat in the secondary either way, we may as well blitz and try to force an errant through.

Watching the Ravens this year, I loved seeing Terrell Suggs bursting through the line on his way to a sack and Ed Reed coming off a safety blitz.  I've seen them use every type of blitz imaginable.  I'm excited to see what Mattison brings in terms of blitz packages.

I'm really excited that we have Mattison back in Ann Arbor, he gonna bring the aggressive and toughness back to this football team.   Between Greg and Brady, these guys can recruit like no other, expect a quick turn around with this team on defense.

(something like this) "...I definitely wouldn't have done it if it wasn't for Brady Hoke."

"I was in a great situation, but when it became Michigan, and it became Brady Hoke, it was too hard to pass up."

How is THAT for a testimonial on our new HC?  Can we kick off, already?
