I have no doubt Grant Newsome will succeed at whatever he chooses to do. It would have been great to see him be able to give football one more go, but he definitely seems like someone who can and will go far regardless.

He will do great things off the field. He is a true leader and intelligent man. Wish we could see him on the field again, but really hope he will be on the sidelines each week.

God bless you for your inspiring effort, big guy.  May you find as much success off the field as you no doubt would have had on the field but for that unfortunate hit.

Damn - we all feared this was going to end like this.  I feel so bad for the kid who everyone agrees is a great guy and he was working so hard to get back on the field.

It won't be the last time we hear his name and he will make us even more proud to be a Michigan Man off the field as he did when he was on the field.

Really unfortunate for Grant that never gets another chance to play after the cheap shot he took in the Wisconsin game. I would have liked to see him get into a game again even if only for a garbage time snap. He will do great things off the football field and be a great example of a Michigan Man in life.

Man, that is a bummer. Still expect to hear his name a bunch when he goes pro in whatever else! I'm banking on the next POTUS to come from the University of Michigan :)

Still can't wrap my head around how it's legal for a defender to take out legs of a blocker like we saw in Grant's case.  I'm sure in some strange way this whole experience has made him a stronger individual, though I wish this on no one.

While it's sad for us as football fans, I can't help but think that ultimately Grant will make us prouder off the field than he ever would have on it.

That's not a slam on his potential as a player. It's a statement on his qualities as a person.

Go Blue forever, young man.

Writing on the well seemed like it was there for a good long while.  Best of luck to Grant with what he chooses to do in the future and I look forward to finding out what that is.

Still amazes me on the impact his injury had on the entire OL since it happened.  If he had kept the pace he was on, I'd bet heavily that he would've been a 1st round pick this year and starting his NFL career.

Best of luck to someone who will continue to be a FIRST ROUND pick to the betterment of society as a whole.  We will be hearing about Grant Newsome in the future!

I'm not sad for him—every year there are many people who lose limbs after suffering horrific injuries, but Grant was fortunate to have had access to tremendous medical expertise and talent and facilities that many others don't. As a result, he can still walk, run, and do many things that most of us take for granted, and will be able to do so with his children when he's a father.

He just can't play a sport in which men weighing up to 300 pounds launch themselves at his legs. It was the smart and right decision to retire.

He'll have a degree from a great educational institution on top of that. He will go far.

You make good points, but considering how he poured himself into getting back on the field, I'm absolutely heartbroken for the kid. Was hoping he'd at least get to see some ceremonial playing time to publicly validate his hard work. Definitely one of those guys that we'll hear more about going forward for off the field accomplishments, but bummer man.

Sad. How one single play can alter your life’s trajectory. But, sometimes thing happen for a reason and of all the players I’ve followed over the years...I have no doubt he will be a success and a great leader to many people in his lifetime.

PS- an “I told you so” coming from James Yoder in 3....2....1....

Time to start in on that new future, Mr. President.  Gerry Ford had a bum knee and it never slowed him down.  Thanks for the ride Grant Newsome - Michigan Man.  Go Blue !!!

Unfortunately the writing has really been on the wall for this for a while, but you've got to commend the man for doing everything he could to get back.

Hope he can stay with the team as a coach, GA or some kind of volunteer role. Either way, best of luck to him. He'll be successful in whatever he does.

Remarkable young man.  Best wishes to Grant Newsome for continued good health and academic/professional success.

Not shocking but also incredibly sad. He is handling this with incredible maturity and grace and will without a doubt be a success in life.

This kid seems like such a class act. I'll be sad to see him never suited up for Michigan again, but very happy he has gotten the best medical supervision a person can get, will get a great degree and will still be affiliated with the good guys on Saturdays this fall. Great to see Harbaugh and Co. have Grant's back through it all.

While I did not expect to see this today, I am not surprised by this outcome. It is sad when you think about what this young man went through to get back on the field, which was more than many others would be able to bear. I agree with others in that I’m sure that he’ll be successful in whatever he decides to do going forward.

This is truly a bummer, BUT he will probably do more amazing things NOT playing football.  He’s got a terrific head on his shoulders.  I don’t think this is the last we will hear from Mr. Grant Newsome.

Damn-- So wanted to see him plowing defenders for another long run.  He is the ideal person, man, and football player.

No matter:  The death of his football career will make him more powerful than we can imagine.  As a result, he will accomplish things outside football that most football players can only dream of.

God bless, Grant.

Bummed because was expecting/hoping that one of the great highlights this year would be to see Grant on the field again.  But definitely believe he went through this struggle to be an inspiration to others.  He has and pretty sure he will be in his next chapter.

Godspeed Grant Newsome and GO BLUE!!!

Terrible I remember watching that play, I was pretty pissed at the Wisconsin player,  he had you beat so you submarine him and took away his career there’s a line between playinghard and playing cheap.  Mr Newsome I wish you the best of luck in whatever you decide to do, by all accounts your a tremendous young man with a bright future.
