Good ESPN article on modern recruiting, Gardner/Forcier
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/columns/story?columnist=bennett_brian&id…
This is a pretty interesting article on recruiting in the wake of social networking sites. Some very good points using Gardner and the Forciers as examples.
counting Grady (and not counting Sheridan) I think that Michigan will have 65 players on scholarship for 2010. Can anyone confirm this?
I love how Joe McKnight said he was turned off by LSU fans for their cyberstalking.. Yikes. Good article.
"Mega-recruit Joe McKnight has said that he chose to play football at USC in part because LSU fans turned him off with their obsessive cyberstalking."
Note to any mgobloggers cyberstalking recruits: Be careful what you wish for!!
only turned off because they were being creepy. If they had told him to "FUCK SHIT UP!" he probably would have been less creeped out.
Varsity Blue on April Fool's Day was some funny shit. Got me.
+1 mgobloggers stop fucking stalking recruits on facebook and ect...how many recruits do we need to scare off before it registers in fans heads!!!
any recruits who didn't come to Michigan because of this.
it's creepy so stop it (not you specifically)
but i was responding specifically to the part where he said "before we scare off more recruits"
I had heard rumblings the part of why Newsome decommited and signed with Penn State was because he was turned off by wannabe/creepy blue fans who were constantly bothering him on facebook and myspace. again these were rumors and I am unsure if it was him saying this or just someone's speculation
but more importantly 12-under fan leaving comments cute and not harmfull, 18-25 yr hot chicks are always a positive but when your 30+ and you leave comments like "FUCK SHIT UP! GO BLUE!" just CREEPY!!!!!!!!! (and a lil O$U-ish)
at the same time, if I were a recruit I'd just say I liked factor x about school y more.
People justify it by saying "It's on the internet, so it's public information." I'm not so sure the average teenager fully grasps this when he/she posts personal stuff on these sites. I'm glad these sites weren't around when I was in high school. As adults, we should err on the side of caution and respect the kids' privacy.
Agree completely, jmblue. Good post.

I foresee potential sabotage by fans posing as those from other schools to turn recruits off from rivals.
Sad, but true.
I found it pretty funny that Lattimore's FB page got infected with a virus and it accidentally sent a porn link to a Clemson assistant coach. Awwkward haha.
I thought more importantly, it shows that fans really need to use some restraint when contacting recruits through facebook evidenced by Joe McKnight choosing USC partially "because LSU fans turned him off with their obsessive cyberstalking".
It also makes me wonder about Facebook and Myspace being considered less credible as news outlets. I think it just shows how media is changing.
I found this quote particularly interesting:
"Although Lattimore plans to hold a traditional news conference when he ultimately announces his college choice, he's leaning toward telling everyone his final list of five schools through his Facebook status update."
The anecdote about Lattimore unintentionally sending the Clemson coach a dirty link is one for the ages.
how one would get one of those facebook viruses...it's so funny that of all the people on his buddy list, an asst coach would be the one that would get sent a porno link.
(a far-fetched idea) I don't think I would even have a facebook page. That or I would make my name like SkippyCrunchy Mathis (Dior) so that people that didn't know me couldn't just search my name and spam my wall. For someone of that high a profile, I just don't see the risk/reward being that great...too many bad things can be leaked or presumed from a facebook page...like one's propensity to act like a "Fuck Lion".
have two profiles.
One for personal... family and friends.
One to promote yourself as a football player.
On the personal one you could be much more careful about who you accept as a friend as well as more careful as to what content you make public.
I agree, but then, I'm not a teenager anymore. The kids normally don't expect people outside their personal circles to view their pages. Outsiders should keep this in mind.
"Gardner say they've used Facebook to talk with coaches"
This is hilarious to me thinking that RR or Rod Smith is on Facebook
I don't find it that funny, they need to adapt to how kids these days communicate. Imagining JoePa on facebook though makes for a good laugh.
I hope our herd of obsessive/freaky/fucking creepy Michigan Man facebookers read this and stay the fuck away from the players. Stare at their profiles all you want and follow their updates, but stop commenting on their every move and making an ass out of yourself with your profuse pleading to come to our school or telling Tate he should be studying instead of going out on Friday night(yes, I've seen jackasses say that to him on his status) is disgusting. Get a grip and leave them alone.
I guess I'm coming to this with the wrong perspective, but I just don't understand why these kids go ahead and accept everyone's friendship requests. What's the point of being friends with creepy randos who spam your wall and stalk your life?
Because they're 17 and they think it's cool and probably don't expect them to be creepy.
Take it for what's worth but I have a buddy whose dad is a Penn St. assistant. I haven't talked to him in a while but was able to yesterday. When we started talking about football, Devin Gardner came up. He told me that the message his dad is getting is that Gardner is waiting to see how the UM QB situation pans out and how well Tate/Denard perform. Penn State is still recruiting him very hard ( I know they just got a qb commit) and feel they have a great chance if Tate or Denard plays well this year.
o rly?
how that's gonna work when penn state is about to have 2 QBs committed and weren't a major player for DG to begin with.
lets hope not
So your first post on here is an attempt to stir shit up?
This is the problem with Brian's new point system. I tell you something I heard from a buddy with a dad who is a B10 coach, you don't like it so you rank my comment negative. Good job, chief!
Yeah, I can see something like this being a problem, especially when you're just trying to give the community information that you have. So, I'll help you out, as you didn't do anything wrong in sharing it.
So he wouldn't want to play at Michigan because he'd have Tate in front of him, but he'd want to play for PSU where he'd have Newsome a year in front of him and 2 4 star QB's in the same class as him? Yeah, that makes sense.
I've been a reader here forever. I've never posted before because I normally don't have anything different to say. I understand that PSU has Newsome and just received a highly rated commit but I'm just telling you guys what my buddy told me. I think he was just trying to say that if Tate is good their coaching staff thinks he'll go elsewhere. Trust me, I want Devin to stay blue as mush as anyone.
i don't even know where your friend is getting that from. to the best of my knowledge he hasn't even been offered by penn state.
Gardner will start for at least 2 years. He probably won't, but he could even pass Forcier in 2-3 years. There is no way he starts for more than 2 years at Penn State.
lol "hard"
as in, quit being a blow hard.
Penn State hasn't even offered him
http://www.chicagosports.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?pr_key=81347&sport…
I'm sure none of the prospects on rivals will ever attend a college not listed in their bio, right? Quit giving rivals a hard blow and realize that sometimes their info isn't always upto date and that recruits can change their mind. Although now that I think about it Tulsa's "interest meter" was always higher than Michigans for the beaver. I'm not saying Devin is going to psu just that their coaches think he is far from solid. Shoot the messanger.
bang
Too many sites to keep up with. FACETWIT, MYBOOK, BOOFACTWIT! Whats next? What year are we in now?
How am I at Negative 8? What the heck!
I'm not worried about the Devin Gardner to PSU rumor at all, but I think it's funny that some of you are like "He could beat out Tate for the job" and then you're like "There's no way he'd beat out Newsome and Paul Jones."
If he can beat out Tate, he can beat out the guys from PSU.
to give you like 5 points for this, but it only allows one
It's the thought that counts.
BS about Gardner. As a Michigan Fan, I not worried about Gardner going to Nappy Valley, but I am concerned about this guy Kenny Stills. He is a WR out of the San Diego area and according to a friend that has a son playing QB in San Diego-this guy is going to be a big time play maker. I also work with a former PS player that keeps telling me that their offensive line is in big trouble this year? (For what it's worth)
Good one, hilarious. Didn't see that coming.
facebook and myspace is even creepier than ones that do it in reality. At least those ones run the risk of getting caught and having the shit beat out of them for being such dbags.
As for the Devin Gardner rumour, I think people should take a second to consider what they are spreading before they actually spread it. Think to yourself, "Does this make any logical sense whatsoever?" and if the answer is no......don't spread it. This one makes zero sense IMO.
