Going to the u-M vs Maryland (at Maryland) game?

Submitted by Blue Kool Aid on October 16th, 2021 at 9:45 PM

I am looking to go to the Mich-Maryland football game in College Park on Nov 20.  Hoping to meet up with some fellow Wolverines.

It looks like tickets will be pretty easy, I am waiting for Maryland to crater some more and drive ticket prices  down further.   Have been told it is easy to move around to better seats, particularly if you are still there for second half.

I will be driving in from (Lower Slower) Delaware.   Who is up to go torture the turtles?

Is there camping after the game?  I'll bring the jarred gravy...

I'm interested, though, since I live in the DC area.  Won't know 'till closer to the game, though.

I'll be at the game.  I make the 250 mile trip north every other year from Raleigh.

Tickets are easy to get.  Reasonable prices for even the best seats.  Maryland isnt exactly crushing it this season.

I always sit on the UM side, near the 50 yard line.  Try to stay at least 20 aisles above the first row, otherwise the players, camera-crews, etc will block your view.

Every year since Maryland joined the B1G, Maryland home games attract more UM fans than Maryland fans.  DC has A HUGE Michigan fan base.  Will be the same this November when they play.  It's almost a home game for Michigan.

My friend Brandon just moved to the east coast. He’s not a Michigan fan but It’ll still be a fun time so let’s go Brandon and take the road trip. I hope to be there because I’m not going alone.

Yup. The Michigan side of the stadium (the side with the upper deck) is super easy to move down into the lower bowl. Section ushers do not check tickets, and often disappear if enough fans leave early.

Best bet is to park at the ikea (about a mile down the road) and take a bus/Uber right up to the stadium.

Ill be driving from West Chester (10 minutes north of the DE/PA line). Can’t wait for this game.

Me, the wife, and my brother are gonna fly in for the game. My wife and I have been going to a different away game each year (except last year of course, supposed to be Minnesota). Any who we will be there. The one question I have though is does anyone know the section Michigan is given their allotment? I was given 2 tickets but need a third. Also if anyone has any tips or suggestions I am flying into Baltimore. Never really been to the area.

In the lower section, the away section is section 2. If you're in the upper, it's basically the section above that.

That said, Maryland sucks and Michigan fans will pack the place. I got section 3 and I'm pretty sure you'll be with um fans a few more sections further over. Just avoid the student section. And don't go too low or the benches obstruct the view

Maryland fans are belligerent about basketball. Football, nobody cares. They're friendly. I'm relatively local... Over in northern Virginia. Tons of Michigan fans here. If we are somehow undefeated then, man it's gonna be fun. It'll feel like a Michigan home game

If you can find the time after the game, or on Sunday, drive into DC and just walk around the National Mall for a few hours.  You'll be impressed by the sheer size of it all.  On TV, everything looks normal because no building can be taller than the Capitol Dome.  But the immensity of it all is overwhelming!

I second 1VABlue1's advice.  If you don't feel like driving, the Metro (DC's subway) stops near College Park and you're a short 30 min ride into the city.  On a Saturday it should be relatively empty.

Also it's a myth that buildings cannot be taller than the Capitol dome (or Washington Monument, which is the tallest structure in the city).  While the DC Planning Commission does have height restrictions, it has nothing to do with the height of the Capitol or any monuments.

I’m a maybe. I live in MD, really want to bring my kids to the game - some idiot friend of mine decided to book their wedding that day. Hoping for a noon kickoff.

can't you see the scene at the local church next saturday, jimandi in the wedding party but with an ear bud in to monitor the game.  the pastor/priest is starting his gig, going through the vows and such....

pastor: and so we come here today as these two wonderful young people have decided to dedicate their lives to one another....

jimandi:  that's a crap call!!  get a replay!!  that cannot be right!

(church gets unsettled. jimandi gives heartfelt and sheepish apology.  the ceremony continues.)

a few minutes later, unfortunately as the first half of the game winds down and michigan is trying to score again:

pastor:  it now gives me great pleasure to present to you...

jimandi, not-so-under his breath:  hurry up!  hurry up!  clock is ticking!

pastor:  mr. and mrs. jones.  you may kiss the bride.

jimandi:  touchdown!!   touchdown!!  wooo!!  wooo!!

In previous years, I was able to buy tickets directly from Maryland’s website (less fees, good selection).

Also, get a parking pass and tailgate. There should be 50% Michigan fans and it’s a fun time.

My son and I will be driving up to College Park from Virginia Beach.  Taking the same approach as you - waiting for ticket prices to drop before pulling the trigger on the purchase.  There are and should continue to be plenty available.

I'm taking my boys--we go every time Michigan is in town.  It's a really fun game; the stadium is usually half Michigan fans.  You can wait to buy tickets, but I'd buy a parking pass now.  They're only $17 if you buy them through the University of Maryland, but the lots are filling up, and without one, parking around the stadium can be a real pain.

Second Blue2000’s advice. I live in NOVA, took my son to the 2019 game and it was a blast. Purchase the parking pass early through the school and arrive early. This ensures a good spot in the lot & a great pre-game experience.

The Maryland fans are great, there will be plenty of our fans and the campus is beautiful! I believe I purchased my pass for the $15-$20 range.

Been every year they played at Md since they joined the BIG; there are always way more Mich fans than Md fans. Love that they serve beer now, and tailgating isn't horrible either.

My advice: Buy parking now, buy tix whenever.

I went to the the Iowa game two weeks ago — it was a Friday night and it’s 12 minutes from my house — and tickets were plentiful, through the school and elsewhere. BUT parking was $130 on StubHub.

You can find neighborhood spots if you go early and don’t mind walking but it’s not a tailgate environment.

I have been to 2 UM games at College Park; my son’s in DC so it’s a good excuse to hang with him.  But I have generally just got tickets in the UM section (off in a corner but a jovial group).

I will offer that parking, if you have not purchased it in advance, is really painful.  The second time we just took the DC Metro and from there, there was a free bus.  Curious to know if others have better advice.

Since it is an in-state trip for me, I have been to the last three Michigan-Maryland games.  I have the Metro to be an easy way to avoid traffic and parking issues.  The Greenbelt station is only one stop away from College Park for me coming from north of the beltway.  If it is a night game, you would just need to make sure you will be able to catch the last train, but I think that they have extended the hours again until 1 am on Saturdays.

I have enjoyed being able to see the team up close and congratulate them after the game as they head to their buses, which are just outside the end of the stadium without seating.  Not sure if COVID will impact that this year.

(Free) Parking is allowed along the shoulders of Rt 193 (the road that runs along the back of campus near the stadium).  The UMD golf course is directly opposite the stadium on 193 so if you locate that you'll be where you want to be.  Snagging this requires getting to the game ca. 2 hrs early, though.

As many have stated, this is always a huge Michigan turn out and the game has a nice atmosphere.  One of these years it will actually be a close game, but this may not be the year for that...

I've gone every year since the Terps joined the B1G. I like the 200-level upper deck seats that are behind the visitors' bench. Great site lines from there that are not too away, either. I've always gotten my tickets directly from the umterps.com website. Tickets in the secondary market are still above face value even now with many unsold tickets, mainly because there's a premium charge for seats in sections between the 30's, so season ticket holders are amortizing that charge over individual tickets. Yet, people with tix outside the 30's are still pricing at that same level, even though the box office is selling those seats for less, directly.

Whatever you do, don’t buy a paper ticket from a scalper. I made that mistake at College Park four years ago and, of course, it turned out to be a bogus ticket. They let me in anyway because they need fans to buy stuff and help make a sparsely attended program look less sparsely attended.
