Gators appear to be next in the NCAA's violation sights
Maurkice Pouncey allegedly received $100,000 (yes that is right, $100k!!) prior to the Gators bowl game from an agent.
It is really amazing how many different violation stories have come up in the last week or so. Was the NCAA in hibernation until July or something?
way they (the media) have villified Coach Rod. To quote Michael Irvin, "Same intensity."
Meyer has a lot of slack due to his W-L record. Fans tend to overlook an awful lot when you are in the running for a national championship. With a losing record, Meyer would be seen as the devil incarnate.
For those with short memories, RichRod's stock had gone stratospheric after the 4-0 start last year, only to sink as the year progressed.
if Urban Meyer had a dream about this happening as well? Maybe we should consult Shariff Floyd.
... but it gave him a pretty bad case of acid reflux when he found out about it.
Eh - they're self-reporting. Maybe it is time to smackdown on agent ethics.
This investigation and the (other) USC investigation are a clear warning to all schools about the danger agents pose to their programs. Woe to the program that turns its head to the players that are looking to cash in on the promise of the next level before the current level is complete.
Is this like the rules at the dog park? "If I don't see it, it didn't happen."
This was the first thing I thought too.
"What? I wasn't head coach at the time."
Cue Urban to start his best Fred Sanford.
Cluching Chest "I'm coming Elizebeth!!!"
I'd be perfectly happy if the NCAA only made Florida and its fanbase stop doing that retarded chomp motion as punishment.
True, but I did enjoy the mocking chomp followed by an X motion that either Arrington or Manningham threw up after a TD in the Capital One Bowl.
I remember Hobson and some others doing it when we beat them in '03 also.
Very similar to when Braylon threw the upside down Texas horns, had that pic as my wallpaper for a long time.
After the Auburn kicker kicked the game-winning FG a couple years back against them. I think it was '07?
but it's so fun to see every florida opponent do it to mock them
with your index finger and thumb instead of your arms, like an English lady drinking tea--shuts them up quick. Pretend to peer through the space between them and it gives a bonus suggestion about how big their weenies are. I've been doing it to my wife's family--all insufferably proud UF grads--for years; they have no choice but tolerate me. Made the mistake of doing it to some drunken Gator fans here in Tallahassee once, though, and. . . well, I was glad I was in Tallahassee.
Unfortunately, our six-year-old loves to do it. House divided, all that stuff. Thank God--or LLoyd-- for that Capital One Bowl. Gator fans all pretty much feel they own the state of Ohio (though they wouldn't want to live there). Michigan--no.
I wonder why the kid couldn't just wait 4-5 weeks for the pay day?
He might have been in trouble with the wrong sort of people, his Mom might have been getting foreclosed on. You just don't know. Not that those are good reasons to break the law, but it might not have been pure greed.
imply greed. You may be right. Perhaps there's a legit hardship reason. But if he knew he was declaring for the draft early, and knew a chunk of change would be at his disposal in a few weeks time, I would think most situations could be mitigated.
I'm not a Florida fan, but I'll feel somewhat bad for his former teammates and the program, however, if this is just a situation of a kid making a dumb choice and they pay the price.
It's one thing if the school was encouraging it or turning a blind eye to it, but you can't stop a kid from taking a wad of cash short of having them followed everywhere they go. Hopefully that won't hurt them, because it would be undeserved.
with the principle of what you're saying. Who knows what reasons he had. Potentially extenuating, or maybe just greed. It's clear that the agents aren't looking out for the players, but just trying to be the first to get an "in" ethics be damned.
Just one note - there was nothing illegal that occurred (as you suggest), most likely, just in violation of NCAA regulations.
Maurkice Pouncey's locker:
I think this happens a lot more often than fans think. Officially, agents aren't allowed to contact players until after their final season is over, but I've heard that that rule is laughed at. Agents who wait that long won't find any clients left. (Incidentally, Woodson was accused of accepting gifts from an agent a month before the '98 Rose Bowl, but fortunately we were never investigated.)
Urban didn't know. The idea that pathological control freaks like Urban Meyer don't know is complete nonsense. Nothing happens within 100 miles of Gainesville that Urban does not know.
If this is proven, I would imagine that Florida declare Pouncey ineligible, vacate the bowl victory over Cincinnati, which was a disappointment to them anyway, and offer a few schollies as "extra" punishment. The self-reporting will definitely help their cause.
If you want to see Florida go down, hope for the investigation to cause some collateral damage.
Tebow's BCS record in that game. interesting
I agree the self reporting will help. But, once the NCAA starts nosing around, who knows what will turn up.

Maybe they find more stuff while investigating, because this seems like what the poster above said where it may just vacate the win as the biggest punishment. Then, maybe RR's efforts to build good pipelines in FL will pay off.
Come on up boys! Don't worry about whats happening with the Gators, just come up to Michigan. It's beautiful in the fall! And we have lots of trees!
question Urban Meyer. Like, who's gonna volunteer for that job?
will be next offseason or something?
there is a just and merciful God.
If you have never seen this, it will really get the blood pressure going:
So don't hold your breath on anything major heading the Bucks way.
Wow I had no idea about this. 375 violations? That means they've committed a violation about once every 8-9 days. Even if they are minor that is just ridiculous
BOOM, Investigations
This happens all the time! This is nothing new going on right now. I know for a fact that an agent has/is in contact with a couple guys from a school in the Big Ten. One of those guys will be a redshirt sophomore and the other will be a redshirt junior. This is nothing new and will continue to happen for a while.
