Game times for ND, MSU, Penn St?

Submitted by TK on October 1st, 2019 at 3:44 PM

Is there any thought as to what the game times will be for these games? I know TV dictates it but usually people on here are pretty smart with predicting these so I thought I would ask.

You actually just want a prediction? Slow day at work? OK I'll bite. ND - night game. MSU noon, well because we will either play at night or noon. I guess that means PSU will be at night. There you go.

More like an educated guess based on determining factors is what I’m looking for.

The ND game is my biggest concern because if it’s a night game I will be able to attend. I’ve heard the rumors is may be, but I’m wondering what that is based on.

In yesterday's 12 day picks the ABC Prime Time game for October 12 was not finalized.

It will be either Clemson/Florida State (ACC) or Penn State/Iowa (B1G).

If ABC chooses the ACC game, PSU/Iowa will go to Fox Sports 1 (still at 7:30 PM kick).  If ABC chooses the ACC game, the B1G won't have a prime-time game on either ABC or ESPN.

As to why all that matters?  Per the TV contracts, the B1G is guaranteed six prime-time games on either ABC/ESPN.  We have had 2 thus far (OSU/Nebraska and MSU/OSU this coming Saturday).  So 4 needed.

I'd bet large sums of $$$ that ND/Michigan is Prime Time on ABC or ESPN.  That makes 3.  Still need 3 more.

But if Clemson/FSU is the ABC Prime Time game in 11 days, that makes a Michigan/PSU Prime Time game on ABC/ESPN a bit more probable.  Those other 3 prime-time games will need to come from somewhere.

Every B1G game on October 19 is already slotted for the afternoon, outside of Michigan/PSU and Indiana/Maryland.  If there's no ABC/ESPN prime-time game on both October 12 and October 19 - then you're looking at needing 3 prime-time games in November.  That's a whole lot.

Take all that FWIW.  But I think the placement of PSU/Iowa will be telling as regards the future placement of Michigan/PSU.

I suppose it's possible.  But I seriously doubt it.

Disney and FOX have various different weeks during the year where they get to first choice of B1G games.  ND/Michigan was announced as a Disney game back in the spring.  Which is pretty good circumstantial evidence that Week 9 is a week where Disney has the first pick.  Disney LOVES Notre Dame.

Whoever doesn't have the 1st pick gets the next pick.  I can't see FOX passing up Wisconsin/OSU.

Now what could happen is Disney then taking some other B1G game and putting that on ESPN prime-time against ND/U-M on ABC.  Not impossible, but it does seem very cannibalistic from a rating perspective (especially if they chose PSU @ MSU).

Here is the 10/26 schedule.

https://www.espn.com/college-football/schedule/_/week/9

As you can see, there are some excellent games on the slate. I thought GameDay would come to Ann Arbor for our game against Notre Dame, but looking at the schedule, I have a feeling they will go to Baton Rouge, which is totally understandable. As it stands now, they're both in the top-10 and it's a huge rivalry. There is also Wisconsin at OSU, but I doubt they go there. OSU is likely going to crush Wisconsin. I hope I'm wrong. PSU and MSU is not going to be an option at that point in the season. Other than those games I mentioned, nothing else seems appealing for a GameDay setting.

It's not a deal breaker, they go to the SEC frequently, even if it's a CBS game, but it would be niave to think it isn't a factor.

Also a lot of football left to be played.  Auburn plays @ Florida this week.  If they lose that, very good chance GameDay goes to LSU on the 12th for Florida @LSU and they likely wouldn't return to Baton Rouge two weeks later, especially with multiple other good options on the 26th. EDIT: if Texas wins at WVU this week, GameDay is almost certainly going to the Tex-OU on the 12th.

Still if Auburn loses to Florida this week, their visit to LSU becomes less attractive.

I think ND will be a night game. It fucking better be. We need as much of a home field advantage as possible. The last two losses to them were night games. We owe them. I hope MSU is 3:30 or night. If that game is on ESPN/ABC, I think it will be the 3:30 slot. I'm praying to the football gods the PSU game is noon. If it's on Fox, that will likely be the case.

FWIW here's an article from earlier this year when Warde was asked about the possibility of night games this year.

https://www.detroitnews.com/story/sports/college/university-michigan/wolverines/2019/08/14/warde-manuel-michigan-could-play-notre-dame-not-msu-night/1997891001/

“If I was going to guess I would guess (Notre Dame),” Manuel said on the podcast. “We can have one more or we can have none. …If I got a vote we wouldn’t have any.”

“Both ADs would have to agree (to play it at night), and it’s not even an option,” Manuel said.

Sparty is about to take on OSU on the road, Wisconsin on the road, and then PSU at home. I think they'll be 4-4 after that stretch so guessing a solid noon game there.

I thought one of the insiders said earlier in the year that PSU would not be a night game but not sure who and what credence to give that.

Notre Dame seems likely to be a night game.

MSU gets Illinois at home before they get to us which will be a win (and there's a bye week in there to space out time from losses), so I wouldn't be so sure. They'll likely be 5-4, but it wouldn't be shocking if they were 6-3 (their final two games are vs. Maryland and @Rutgers so that leaves them on track for 9-3 and a ~Top 15 finish if they win in Ann Arbor).

The PSU game will probably be a night game.  They usually devote the day of the Michigan game to worshiping JoePa's legacy, burning Emmert in effigy and cursing Henne and Manningham.

It's a big day there.

Too early to tell for PSU.  Depends on how the TV rights work.  Fox is going all-in on the 12noon time slot for their marque games, so if PSU-UM is top game it would be at 12noon.

ND will depend on where ABC slots it relative to their other games, but likely night game.

MSU will be at 12noon to avoid finishing in the dark and needing like 2x the security.

I hope Notre Dame is a night game if only to make up for the unfathomable decision to make MTSU a night game. I still do not understand that. I assume then that MSU and Penn State are very likely noon kicks.

PSU will be the whiteout that was already announced which means short of a Miracle it will be a night game. (PSU's last 3 whiteouts were all at night)

ND will be our home Night game. huge game national stage. College Gameday in the building if we both keep winning.

MSU will probably be noon or 3:30 game.

I posted this in the Michigan v Illinois thread.

I heard weeks ago that ND is a certain night game. I also heard there was a strong chance MSU would be a night game.

My source: 3rd hand from people who know (original source is staff on the team/athletic department).

I trust my sources. We've already planned our very large group tailgate around a night game.
