Friday / Holiday weekend POSBANG!

Submitted by mi93 on May 28th, 2021 at 12:15 PM

We're due for a POSBANG!

Happy Friday!  Happy unofficial beginning of summer this weekend (despite the garbage weather in many places today)!

To all the MGoVets past and MGoMilitary present, thank you for your service.

Have an awesome and safe holiday weekend everyone.

Go Blue!

A truly bangworthy weekend. Memorial Day (a heartfelt thanks to all those that sacrificed in the name of our country), the unofficial beginning of summer and...

Sunday is also the first round of Roland Garros. One of my favorite tournaments. But holy shit, what a crappy draw. Djokovic, Nadal, and Federer all in the same half.

Go Nole! Hoping to see this in two weeks

My husband and I are driving down to Decatur, IL for the D3 baseball regionals tomorrow. If my son's team makes it through, on to the College World Series in Cedar Rapids next week. Unfortunately, our region has the #1 team so we have to make it through them first, unless someone else beats us to it. It's a double elimination tournament. We both won our first games.

I know that we've got the 500, but I really wish that there were an F1 race this weekend, too.

Anyway -- HMD to everyone, and, as ALWAYS, GO BLUE!

My wife teaches HS and I'm on the Board of Regents. Tomorrow morning is graduation so we get to go stuff our faces at all the parties scheduled for the next 3 days.

One of them is just having dessert, bringing in the ice cream truck that sets up at the Berrien County Fair every year. You can't beat that with a stick, but you can bang it!

Others will have other opinions but as a vet, I consider a military family to be one in which one or more of that family sees military service as a career.

My family, by contrast, served when necessary. In a civilian military.

Going on a road trip tomorrow for 4 nights, it’s going to be nice to get out of dodge. Go Blue. Bang me.

Dad served in Army pre-Vietnam, with a Pershing Missle outfit. He’s been gone for decades but he’s remembered.

All this talk about about tennis and car driving, and no mention of the unofficial "Super Bowl for the Rest of the World" match, also known as "Two English Teams Playing Each Other in Portugal (not Turkey)."

Today, an American will be a member of the club that wins the UEFA Champions League final match that will be televised on CBS at 3:00 PM Eastern Time. Either Christian Pulisic of Chelsea or Zach Steffen of Manchester City will become the only American winner of the Champions League final other than Jovan Kirovski who played for Borussia Dortmund (Pulisic’s former club) that won the title in 1997, although Kirovski did not make the squad for that match.

Today’s weather is a real downer, but looking forward to the weekend.  Hosting dinner and euchre with good friends on Sunday that we did virtually last year and found a recipe to make very special “basque burgers” for Monday with our son.  Basque burgers look pretty bang worthy!

My FIL is a WWII Navy vet who participated in the second wave at Omaha Beach on D-Day, and on Monday will be the Grand Marshal of a Memorial Day parade.

When you’re thinking of the reasons why we’re enjoying a three-day holiday weekend, think of Henry C. Welles, a Waterloo, New York druggist and businessman who in the summer of 1865 had an idea to honor the Union Army dead who’d fought to save the republic by placing flowers on their graves and Army General John A. Logan who, after his wife had described to him the decorated gravesites of Confederate troops she'd seen while touring battle-scarred Richmond, Virginia in March, 1868, three years after the Civil War ended, gave the Order on May 5, 1868 that created Decoration Day (now called Memorial Day) on May 30, 1868 to honor "the soldiers, sailors and marines (of the Union Army) who united to suppress the late rebellion."

For some of us, Memorial Day hasn’t always been a federal holiday celebrated on the last Monday in May. It didn’t become one until the Uniform Monday Holiday Act passed in 1968 and became effective in 1971.
