Friday Fun - Two FBS Teams have Played More Games than Michigan. Who Are They?

Submitted by alum96 on

Reading all these threads about history and rivalries and our other "big home and home series soon to be announced" and chickens had me going through wikipedia looking at the stats of various major programs.

To that end, UM has the most wins and is tied for winning % with Fig Things.  But 2 teams currently in FBS have actually played more games - I was pretty shocked by that.

Can you guess these 2 programs without looking?  (honor system!)

EDIT - Note to self, when doing polls on history inform Wolverine Devotee he must not answer for 59 minutes.

HINTS:

  • Michigan has played 1268 games and has a .733 winning %
  • The all time leader in games played in FBS has played 1289 games and ... is in the Big 10.
  • The team in second place has played 1271 games with a .552 winning percentage... and a major rival has played them within the past 24 months.
  • All teams are in the Eastern Standard Time Zone.

Ok I'll just throw this here and anybody can try. Only counting teams Michigan has played at least 10 times, what are the 2 teams Michigan has a losing record to?

USC and those bastards at Cornell.

Michigan's worst loss ever was against them (0-56) and when they brought their mascot, a bear cub to Detroit for a game, the cub got loose in the hotel sending guests running everywhere.

He's the bear, "Touchdown".

They used to let their mascot climb the goalposts at game.

Cornell is the only historical rival Michigan has a losing record against. Here's the page from the SuperGuide

Prior to the 2010 67-65 shootout with Illinois, 58 was the most points Michigan had ever given up. That happened in 1891 (L 12-58).

Historical rivals-

  • Cornell (6-12)
  • Chicago (19-7)
  • Penn (11-8-2)
  • Syracuse (6-5-1)
  • Vanderbilt (10-0-1)

Michigan-notre dame will officially receive Historical Rivalry status after tomorrow's game.

Probably be a thrashing on the order of that Wittenberg game I went to last year. Chicago has 88 on their squad, Beloit only has 35. The Beloit depth chart has the same guy backing up all three linebackers and the backup LT and RT is already starting at RG.

It's kind of cool going to a game there, especially basketball--they've got the old B1G banners hanging in their gym. It's like turning the clock back 80 years.

Here's one that may cause WD to pause and think instead of reflexively spit out a correct answer:

What large group was absent from Michigan Stadium during the opener last Saturday that had been present at every home game since at least 2011?
