Freshmen Participation Tracker after 4 games

Submitted by milk-n-steak on September 25th, 2022 at 5:05 PM

According to data from mgoblue.com, here are the Freshmen participation numbers after 4 games:

With these freshmen not seeing any game action yet:

If we burn all 10 of those redshirts (and no others) we'll have the most burned redshirts since 2017 when thee 12 young men below all played in more than 4 games.

If this year's group has the overall success of the 2017 group, I think we're in for a treat!

Negged because you switched from last name first to first name first and then back to last name first but with a comma this time. Sloppy Excel work. -1 point

Anyone's redshirt we burned in 2017 we wish we hadn't?  I know COVID impacted eligibility but I think most of these guys would have moved on even with a redshirt.

All this just gives me flashbacks of Brady needlessly burning Ben Gedeon's redshirt. Not saying any of these are ill advised. It's just right where my mind goes every year.

Graham, Johnson, and Stokes for sure will burn theirs.

Moore seems likely if not a lock. Grant and Rolder probably a decent chance.

Loveland is interesting with All being out. Schoonmaker and Bredeson are clearly the top two (Honingford more of a pure blocking TE), but after that they may want or eventually need to use his ability as a pass catcher.

The others seem like they could redshirt unless someone “ascends” to a 2-deep role as the season roles on, which certainly isn’t out of the question.

I’m sure this has already been mentioned, but Harbaugh said last week that they’re planning/hoping on redshirting Crippen this year since they burned it last year not knowing Olu would be here. Basically only an Olu injury would change that.

All of the guys with 4 games are burning it...Grant would be the only "maybe we can play Cam Goode and save Kenneth's year?" I doubt it.

Some of the othe guys like Pollard are already starters on special teams.

All of the guys with 3 or less should redshirt. That gives you one more game for Sabb, Jones and Morris...none of those guys are needed this year, but get them their "free" 4th game at some point. Orji isn't featured enough to waste his year on a token QB run here and there. Donovan Edwards can take those snaps.

Overall redshirting doesn't really mean anything anymore. In a lot of cases, all you're doing is saving a year for the guy to play at another school. But a guy like Orji is exactly the kind of player you WANT to redshirt. Because he could change his position and if he doesn't, that 5th year is critical for his QB development.

In the era of the transfer portal, IMO it’s better to burn a redshirt to prevent a possible transfer. I doubt many players will stick around to see their 5th years - would be awesome if someone could do some data there

I suspect that Pollard keeps his redshirt while Rolder doesn’t. Maybe one of the WRs keep theirs, too. Unless Loveland is an absolute star in STs I’d hope they’d keep his redshirt but I suspect he won’t. (Is he better than Hansen and Hbner right now? Seems to be. Is he so much better that in the limited snaps he’ll get even with All out it’s worth throwing away his 5th year? I doubt it.)

Of those who have played less than 4 games, I think Orji is the only one who might see his redshirt burned unless injuries wreck a position group.
