Freep: 10 MSU suspensions only means lack of depth

Submitted by iawolve on
I will not read the Freep UM section, but I jumped over to check their take on the suspensions. The headline of the article was "Football suspensions dip into Michigan State's depth" as if players were stricken ill by the flu. Not, there are a whole bunch of players now named and implicated in a serious black eye on the university, a roaming band of attackers? What if they had found the guy they were looking for? Would he be dead now from a gang beating? That rag never ceases to amaze me, in a negative way.

If 15-20 members of Michigan's football team threw on ski masks and assaulted an entire fraternity and their female guests, it would be front page of the USA today. Heck, when Rich was accused of practicing too much it was front page free press. On top of Winston's early release and subsequent immediate re-instatement for a similar assault, people would be calling for Rich's head, if not the death penalty for UM football. As it now stands the MSU student newspaper is likely going to break this story, having processed the FOI act request on the police report. Now is it that no one cares about MSU football, or that they've come to expect this behavior?

Other articles on the Freep, believe it or not, did address the reasons for the suspensions. They may be downplaying the incident a bit, but I personally have no problem with this specific article. On a relatively unrelated note, Drew Sharp just published perhaps the most idiotic article he has ever written: http://www.freep.com/article/20091202/COL08/91202004/1054/sports06/Notr… I'm not sure what's worse, insinuating that Weis had a problem with recruiting (!) or this sentence: "You can coach offense, but you recruit defense."

He sets the bar to a new high every day, and then every day he goes higher. There is the very real danger that before long he will write a column of such colossal, reality-bending stupidity that it will create a time-space singularity in which the laws of the universe as we know it break down, leading to the rapid deflation of the universe, the rapid re-condensing of all matter and time into the monoblock, and then we'll have another Big Bang.

If this happened at UM, the freep would cite it as further "evidence" that RR should be fired. Since it happened at MSU, though, it's just a case of "boys will be boys."

That is interesting. I find it interesting also that virtually none of the sources say that it wasn't really a "dorm fight" (which would indicate, at least to me, attacks on random individuals) but rather a fight that took place in a dorm between all football players on one side and all members of one fraternity on the other side.
