Former Players on the Sideline for BYU Game

Submitted by Marley Nowell on
We all saw Derek Jeter was on the sideline yesterday. I believe I also saw Devin Gardner there as well. Where there any others people saw that got to revel in the win as we all did?

It is called a Onewheel. Different than the Segway version because you ride it like a skateboard. He sat with me in the game. He had a good time. Funny to see him taking pics on his phone of the field. Also when they played the Great moments in football, or whatever you call it, I told him it would be funny if it was of him. Then sure enough, it was of UTL and one of the highlights was his! I wish I would have recorded him watching his own highlight. Lol. Also I posted a video of him riding it on his Twitter if you want to see it. He has a new teeshirt design if you want to order one. @VSmithGT

yeah, those look really neat and I want one. I thought I'd seen that but didn't say anything, assuming my eyes were deceiving me (going bad ha). Cool story, zero sarcasm. Vincent will always be a fan favorite so I'm sure we'd all like any info/clips/etc you had. Thanks and Go Blue!

If you got hurt and couldn't play with your teammates any more, you're still a part of the team. I had the opportunity to get close to and mentor Austin quite a bit this summer, so this coming straight from interactions with him and the rest of the basketball team. He is still a member of the team and "one of the guys" and treated as such. I wouldn't consisder him a "former player" until he graduates or becomes a grad assistant, but to some that's just semantics. Either way he is still a student athlete for U of M even if his capacity for being an athlete on the court in an official game has been hindered by his past and is treated as such by the academic support staff for athletes as well.

Yeah it was 'Shanghai' something who said Jeter lived at the end of his dorm hall in Markley. The more time that passes, the fuzzier the Jeter details get. That said, he's a lot more Wolverine than LeBron ever was a buckeye.

From MGOBLUE.com article from August 2014 "He took classes at Michigan in the fall semester of 1992 after playing in the minors for the Yankees, and registered again for the next fall. However, when the Yankees asked Jeter to play in the Instructional League in 1993, he withdrew from classes and didn't return to college."

During one of the TV timeouts they had a recognition for the 1981 Rose Bowl team so there definitely a number of former players there.  I heard AC was going to be there for that.

Keep winning and bring all the greats from from the University of Michigan back.. This is great and the crowds energy level is also such an improvement. The moral is greatly improved.

This team held their 35th reunion dinner on Friday and a tailgate yesterday. There was a great turnout of former players from this team, with some of the big names being guys like Anthony Carter, Bubba Paris, Ed Muransky, John Wangler, Rich Strenger, and more.
