First in Net Punting - Zoltan's Legacy Continues
Look at the NCAA Football Ranking database for 2010:
http://web1.ncaa.org/football/exec/rankingSummary?org=418&year=2010&wee…
After Week 1, we are ranked first in net punting with 51 yards. Admittedly, it is still just week 1 and we have punted just once so far - still - its good to see us as a statistical leader again in a category we are used to leading for past few years. All hail Hagerup - the Space Emperor Version 2.0.
Other points to note:
* 1st in sacks allowed - none so far - (Edit - fixed the typo.)
* 13th in Rushing Offense, 32nd in Total Offense
* 28th in Scoring Defense, 33rd in Pass Defense
* Denard is 1st in Total Offense Yards and 5th in Rush Yards
Just the first week I know - but still - a good start is a good way to start the year.

* 2st in sacks allowed (none so far)
Second with none allowed? What's better than none?

From my reading it says we are tied for 1st.

and what the hell is 2st?

Have fixed the typo - it should have said 1st of course.

can you make a point of posting this weekly? I bet a lot of people would appreciate it.

I second that motion.
Or should I say, I 2st that motion?

post this every week - perhaps in a standardized format. Look for it every Monday morning - thats when NCAA updates its database.

While of course we need more data points to start drawing serious conclusions, I would add that since most of the top 30 teams played complete cupcakes this first week (and we did not) that we are actually stronger than these rankings suggest.
When you consider that UCONN was supposed to have a high-powered offense, that 28th ranking in scoring defense becomes even more impressive. Granted, they had a couple unusual drops that could have resulted in points, and we had a couple snafus that normally would have resulted in turnovers, but still . . . .

Those offense and defense rankings are much more impressive since we actually played a BCS conference team, unlike most teams last week.

that not alot of people have give much attention to when they speak about our past teams, but I attended every home game in the years after Epstein left and we struggled to find a good reliable kicker. As others have mentioned on this post, we've been very good in our punting performance, especially with Mesko, but I just thought I'd throw out some kudos to the latter years of Carr and Rich Rod's era for building a kicking core that I don't cringe whenever we have to settle for 3 points on the 15 yard line, or even PAT's for that matter. GO BLUE!!

While we have had serviceable FG kickers in the past few years after Rivas - who was great and very reliable - we still need to find someone who can consistently hit 40+ yarders and has a good chance to hit from 50-55 yard range in special situations.
I think Rivas had a career FG percentage of over 75%. He was money from 40-45 yards. Other similar players that come to mind - Brett Swenson at MSU and Ryan Pretorius at OSU - both close to 80% FG percentage with a range that crosses 50 yards.

We've actually had decent placekicking most of the time since Moeller's days: think J.D. Carlson, Remy Hamilton and Jay Feely. The one thing that's frustrating, though, is that it seems like the transition to a new kicker is frequently rocky.
