First Half Thoughts

I'm looking at the game's stats. One TFL for the entire defense, Martin and Roh do not have a single stat.

Feels like we've become boring like Iowa on offense. I do miss RR's offense for the excitement and big play opportunities on every play...this just seems so bland in comparison. Yes, it's been pretty effective, getting 3-4 yards per play. If we are going to play this methodical type of offense, we need the defense to be way better. They can't be giving up points or our offense can't keep up.
Agree with everyone else, the lack of pass rush is killing us. Special teams is still awful. Overall I think this team is slightly behind where I expected them to be (loose coverage and special team "meh"). Offense is about what I expected.
Hoping the 2nd half brings better adjustments and play. So far, I don't see anyone who can take this team over on offense. I see lots of spreading the ball around, but if the team falls behind, Denard can't get those big runs like he used to...who is going to step up? RBs for the most part have been steady but quiet. I think that missing an elite RB is going to hurt us at some point, Denard is still our only true threat.

Christ our safeties are lined up so far back they could be shopping over at Fingerle. Maybe Kovac is going to build a bitchin treehouse after the game.

Or he was just picking up a 2x4 to club Carder with...that works too.

AGAIN! SACK!!! YESSS!!!
September 3rd, 2011 at 5:57 PM ^
First drive for Western and Carder already been hit 3 times. The last was a doozy!

Alex carder needs to glue his helmet on.

Wheres all the Kovacs hate????
September 3rd, 2011 at 6:15 PM ^
Notice how Kovac is being used as an underneath safety more. A threat to blitz or drop into coverage, while the faster guy is staying over the top. The problem last year was Kovacs was on the top and getting outrun sometines. See the Kovacs tip where he has DB help up top.
Last year I recall seeing it more with Kovacs on the top and getting outrun while one of the hybrid LBs was underneath.
Love Kovacs and love this staff is using his strengths while protecting his weaknesses.

and it's not Denard. Nice. Great blocking
September 3rd, 2011 at 6:23 PM ^
Very cool to see blitzes actually get there in time. It's been awhile.
September 3rd, 2011 at 6:25 PM ^
It's been awhile since we actually blitzed, let alone since blitzes actually hit home.
September 3rd, 2011 at 6:31 PM ^
Not so much last year, but in 2009, those safety blitzes up the gut were basically free TDs for the other team.
September 3rd, 2011 at 6:25 PM ^
Hard to gauge the defense today. If they aren't scoring TDs or blowing up QBs, they are sieve-ing it up. I hope the blitzing is more indicative of what they will be this year.

<br>I do love the two big runs after I said we have no good RBs

Misdirection is killing us. I think the SAMs have a lot of work to do, but let's keep in mind that the starting SAM (Cam Gordon) is out with an injury.
September 3rd, 2011 at 6:34 PM ^
Good point I keep forgetting he's out. Just seems like every run is making it into our 2nd and 3rd level.
September 3rd, 2011 at 6:34 PM ^
Any word on where he is?
*edit* I just read the Magnus post above, didn't hear he had been hurt.

It has been a perfect day for us in the fact that we haven't had to show much on offense and the defense can buid on this game with a ton of confidence!

these delays are killing me. i guess the first ever night game at michigan stadium came a week early

just freaked me out, I tried wiping the bug off my screen.

I used to hate Comcast. Now I hate Dish network. Epic failure today.

Jake Ryan is very good at random variation, he makes things happen. Mattison seems to have figured something out, and Carder (king carder) is rattled.
September 3rd, 2011 at 6:53 PM ^
if they cut the game over to lsu Oregon ill be pissed.
September 3rd, 2011 at 6:58 PM ^
The defense actually made adjustments after the first two drives. We seemed to blitz a lot more frequently on subsequent drives.

The ND game is very odd. USF is up 16-0 but has been outgained. The difference is three ND turnovers.
September 3rd, 2011 at 7:23 PM ^
ND just pulled the QB that would have beaten Michigan last year. Interesting.
September 3rd, 2011 at 8:08 PM ^
But he's not putting in Nate Montana this time. Rees may be an upgrade over Crist. Montana is not.
September 3rd, 2011 at 7:04 PM ^
I haz a feeling kickoff coverage will be addressed in practice next week. It was rancid.
September 3rd, 2011 at 7:05 PM ^
JT Floyd really got away with one. I doubt we get that no call against a better opponent.
September 3rd, 2011 at 7:23 PM ^
...took a HUGE dump (Chicago got the storm first) and missed the opening kickoff and drive. Killing me DISH! Then I switched to streaming when it went out again and ABC took a dump. Dayum!
